Awakening #3

Kane's Awakening

Rate this book
“I built a wall around my heart and refuse to let anyone in.”
Rookie cop Kane Matthews doesn’t believe in love and is only interested in random hookups. It’s easier that way. Less complicated. He learned years before that opening up to people would only cause pain when they screwed him over. At twenty-four, he has no desire to settle down.

“I want someone who will stay by my side. Someone to love and grow old with.”
Defense attorney Ryker Carson is a romantic at heart and is looking for his Mr. Right, but after several failed relationships, he doubts he’ll ever find true love. But that doesn’t stop him from trying. At thirty-one, he’s the father of eight-year old twins, and he needs a man who will accept not only him, but his family as well.

Kane and Ryker couldn’t have been more different, and yet, when they randomly meet in a club one night, their attraction is undeniable. Hot sex in the club soon turns into more, and Kane is faced with one of his biggest fears: commitment. Ryker is drawn to the sexy, arrogant, and unfiltered Kane, even though he suspects only heartache can come from it.
When an incident at Kane’s work leaves him emotionally vulnerable, the two men grow closer and sparks fly. However, Kane’s fears and troubled past catch up to him, threatening to push away the one man who’s ever captured his heart.

*This is Book 3 in the Awakening series and can be read as a standalone. There are trigger warnings for this story, and a list of them can be found using the Look Inside feature on the book.*

"I wasn’t a reader, but if I was, he’d be my favorite book."

SWOON!!!

Ryker and Kane swooped in and stole a piece of my heart. I adored the romantic Ryker who just wanted to find his Mr. Right so he could have someone to love and take care of. I fell for Kane who is a pro at 1-night stands until he wasn't. He is scared, a bit broken, struggles with trust, and in the end just the person to fill Ryker's Mr. Right position. Unfortunately we see these men go through quite a bit before we reach their HEA.

Ryker is the father of adorable 8 year old twins and he's looking for his Mr. Right. He's a romantic at heart and wants to find someone to spend his life with. On a night out on the town with his ex and mother of his kids he meets, Kane. Bad news for Ryker, Kane only wants to be his Mr. Right Now. The chemistry is off the charts and their sexy times are steamy. When Kane see's Ryker as he's about to give up and leave for the night he knows he has to have him. He is the sexiest man Kane has ever seen. But one taste just wasn't enough. He can't stop thinking about Ryker. He lucks out when he finds Ryker on a dating app. that most use as a hooking up sight. From here Kane makes it clear that they can be F*** buddies. But soon feelings are getting involved and hearts are on the line. Ryker is all in. Kane is struggling to let his walls down and with his past his struggle to trust is justified. But once those walls come tumbling down it is sweetly delicious.
I just wanted to add that I loved how adorbs it was to see Kane interact with Ryker's kids, especially his son. Did I not say, SWOON!!!

The characters are well fleshed out and the writing is good. Pick this one up dolls!

Happy reading! xx

Still really enjoyed this.

----------------------------------

This was really good. Lots of hurt/comfort.

I wasn’t too fond of the first meeting between these two, but I knew things would be different after that so I just read on.

Kane is a 24 year old rookie cop who has been hurt in the past. That’s why he doesn’t do relationships. He only does hookups. When he meets a hot guy at a club one night Kane knows he must have him. And when the two have a hot encounter in a secluded corner, their chemistry is off the charts.

31 year old defense attorney Ryker doesn’t do hookups. What he wants is a relationship. He wants someone to love and to build a future with him and his two 8 year old kids. That’s why he is so surprised he throws all this out the window when he meets Kane. Ryker knows it’s nothing but a hookup but he really does want the cocky younger man.

When the two meet again by accident Kane seems to break his own rules by suggesting they hookup again. The next couple of weeks are filled with hot monkey sex, but Ryker wants more even though he knows Kane doesn’t do relationships.

Just when Ryker thinks a future with Kane is hopeless and that there is no other choice but to break it off for good, something happens on Kane’s job. And just when Kane is a huge mess Ryker is there for him….

I really loved these guys. I’m not always fond of the arrogant cocky guy, but from the first page I felt Kane’s pain and saw he used his words and attitude to create distance. Luckily Ryker didn’t give up on him.

I was also happy the period where it was just sex between them was not that long. Ryker didn’t want to just have a sexual relationship with Kane so he immediately told Kane when it became an issue for him.

Kane was pretty angry and hurtful to Ryjer at times, but inside he was hurting so much, that I couldn’t get mad at him for it.

I really loved seeing Kane change and how he was still struggling, but also really trying for Ryker.

This ended up being an amazing hurt/comfort romance.

(This can be read as a stand-alone.)

~3.5~

I really dug this book until the 85 percent mark. Then the metaphorical shit hit the fan not once, not twice, but three fucking times.

Ryker acted completely out of characters and , in a move entirely manufactured to create drama and cause a separation. But there was already enough drama, what with Kane and Michael (MC from book 1)

It's really too bad because I liked both MCs, especially once Kane stopped being an idiot and got over himself already. I wasn't sure about the whole Devon (Kane's ex from high school who seriously fucked with Kane's head) resolution; it seemed too easy.

But Kane and Ryker were hot together, and I really enjoyed seeing the relationship Ryker had with his children and ex. The twins were realistic 8-year-olds and were present without overtaking the story.

Overall, this is a 3.5 star read, but I'm rounding down due to the sheer fuckery at the end.

I’m sorry but I didn’t like this book at all. I liked the writing and the premises but I didn’t like Kane. He was rude, crass and an idiot. Oh, and for the life of me ,I can’t understand how you can’t trust your boyfriend and you can’t say I love you because of a past trauma and abuse and yet , at the same time you are BFF with the abuser. Devon (the abuser) got to repent all of a sudden and became the hero that saved their relationship . Not only that but Ryker was Devon’s lawyer for his divorce and even though he was a violent SOB and a liar and a cheater with his wife , Kane said that Ryker had done a kickass job knocking that chick down a few pegs. How did the wife become the villain here???What the fucking fuck?? And he even got his HEA with Max !!!!

3.5 stars.

I love Jaclyn Osborn. I do. Her book, Axios, was the only 6 star read for me this year.

But this book? I don't know what about it but it felt off. I couldn't connect to the story no matter how well it was written.

It's a case of "It's not you, it's me."

TBH... It took me almost half the book to tolerate Kane. He is one of those always cocky assholes. He acts that way to cover up insecurities from childhood, but it was a little much for me. He does get better when you can glimpse his vulnerability, but that's few and far between until the end. This book did evoke quite a few emotions for me, but I didn't rate it higher because it just seemed like all her others. It just seems to getting a little too formulaic. All of her stories start to run together into one blob. Don't get be wrong, I really enjoyed the first books in this series, but it's become quite predictable.

After months of teasing, postings about her discussions with Kane, and images of these two characters, we finally got an early release for this third installment in the Awakening Series. While this can be read as a standalone, the characters from the other books make appearances. The other two books were good. I loved Michael, probably the best, as a character, but Jackson was a perfect match for dear Zach. And while both books were entertaining, neither held the grit that this one did for me. Part of it may be that I immediately fell hard for both characters. From their initial meeting, they were undeniably explosive together.

Kane was perfectly portrayed as an abused man with so many emotional walls. After a quite abusive relationship in his teen years, he shut himself completely off from any type of emotional connection with anyone and it is not until Ryker that the walls start to shatter. Ryker is just the perfect pairing for being able to see through the bullshit and see into the truth that is in Kane’s heart.

I’d built a wall around my heart and locked it inside an impenetrable barrier, but he seemed to have the damn key.

Ryker…absolutely perfect image.

There are some rough scenes between these two. Some harsh words and difficult situations and there are moments when you want to smack Kane upside the head and make him see reason. But there are the tender aww moments too that make you see inside of Kane and see exactly what Ryker sees. #singlerose <3 This is not a quick journey and for me that is what made this all the better. No one can be expected to change over-night…for anyone.

And while there is the infamous drama around 85%...it worked for me. There were issues and doubts from both parties and again trust is something that does not come easily for some and with Ryker’s history it was something that needed to be addressed.

Overall, this was just so well-crafted and told in such a beautiful way. They grew as a couple and formed such a strong relationship knowing and loving the bad with the good. It worked.

“Because dammit, Kane, you’re all I want. You are everything in a man that infuriates the hell out of me, but I keep coming back for more. Even though you’re stubborn and have asshole tendencies… even though you’re unfiltered and arrogant… I see you. The real you.” He smiled before pressing our heads together. “I’m aware of how stupid that sounds, but it’s true. There are moments when you look at me where I see your kind heart and your passion. Sometimes there’s a light in your eyes after I kiss you, one that you then hide.”
I couldn’t speak, so I stayed quiet and just let him do the talking.
“And the way I feel around you is unlike anything I’ve ever felt before,” he continued, pulling back and looking into my eyes. “I can’t get you out of my head, and I’m tired of fighting it. You might be an asshole… but I want you to be my asshole.”

And an asshole you can’t help but love to pieces.

Ryker smiled. “You ramble a lot when you’re nervous.”
“I’m not nervous.” I looked into his blue eyes and felt my heart twinge. He was too damn handsome. “Okay, maybe I am a little. Throwing you on the bed and fucking you senseless is easy, but taking you out to dinner makes my palms all sweaty.”

I adored the relationships they held with their families as well. And while unconventional, everything seemed so genuine and real. As for Devon…I wanted to kick his ass but I also kinda want his “Awakening” as well. LOL He has a story to tell for sure.

And as a sidenote, I loved the addition of the relationship with Nemesis. Such a beautiful way to show the love and understanding Kane has in his heart and a sort of recognition of the life he has had. He is to Nem as Ryker is to him. Heartwarming to say the least.

So Kane really irritated the f*ck out of me with his jackass ways and cocky attitude but somewhere along the line I really got to like him. Ryker was the perfect man to help Kane move on from his past and the unbearable hurt.

I really enjoyed this one.

I really liked this book. Kane was a lovable asshole. He's harboring pain from a bad and abusive relationship and it stops him from having any type of real feelings. Until he meets Ryker. I like the age difference between the two and I liked the dynamic. Ryker with his kids is adorable. Overall, I like the way it was wrapped up. I will say one thing, I wish the author would have given more detail as to things that happened with Devon and how he(they) got to where they were. Without giving it away, I am glad everyone got their HEA, but just with the backstory and maybe a little personal stuff on my end, I needed that extra why, you know? But even that didn't turn me off. I really enjoyed the entire book :) And this is another accurate truth to the side of mental and emotional abuse.

This was an enjoyable read - the first half was great, and although it waned a little until about three quarters of the way through, the end really picked up and collected the book nicely.

My first from this author - will check out the others in this series.

This was my first Jaclyn Osborn novel but it absolutely won't be my last. This book had angst, hella steam, and a broken MC who lived to sleep around. It was right up my ally.

Kane is broken. The last relationship he had back in high school, and I use the term relationship loosely, was abusive and he never fully recovered. He went so far as to reinvent himself into a buff macho dude who oozes confidence. He is also a complete douchenozzle. Kane does what Kane wants including banging nameless twinks multiple times a week with little care for others feelings. He refuses to ever be that vulnerable high school kid again and wears his asshole behavior like a mask.

Ryker is the complete opposite from Kane. God could any man be sweeter and more understanding than him. He is older than Kane, in his early 30s, and all he wants is a man he can cherish and grow old with. He is an amazing father to his twins from a previous relationship. Genuinely kind is what I would say to describe him. Just an all around good person.

A one night stand between the two leads to many more nights. Ryker starts feeling more, while Kane starts backing up throwing up his asshole front. Some of the things Kane said to Ryker during their fights I wanted to punch him in the dick. He was just so cruel. Poor sweet Ryker didn't deserve any of his spiteful words and seeing that himself leaves.

It doesn't last for long. Events bring the two back together. Kane, no matter how much he fights it, keeps being drawn back to Rykers comforting presence. Ryker, being the man he is, folds when he sees Kane's need for him. Slowly Kane begins to realize how much he depends on Ryker and the two work together to build something great. It took a lot to get there, but eventually Kane figures it out.

I wasn’t a reader, but if I was, he’d be my favorite book

💫💫💫💫💫5 Eyes Wide Awake Stars💫💫💫💫💫

Mr. Shy and Submissive (Ryker) and Sir F***ington (Kane) You have now met the two main characters of this wonderfully funny, steamy, heartfelt story by the awesome Jaclyn Osborn! I absolutely adored Kane's Awakening and you will too!

Kane is a player, 1 night stands are his specialty. Ryker is a father of twins and is desperately seeking his Mr. Right. WOW when these two hook up, sparks and Kindles explode! 1 night with Ryker doesn't seem to satisfy Kane so he goes after friends with benefits! Little did he know his heart would become involved ❤️ Ryker falls hard for the younger, brassy, funny, sexy as sin Kane, but finds himself floundering!

Ryker
“Because d*****, Kane, you’re all I want. You are everything in a man that infuriates the h*** out of me, but I keep coming back for more. Even though you’re stubborn and have a**hole tendencies… even though you’re unfiltered and arrogant… I see you. The real you.”

Kane
Ryker had not only cracked the barriers around my heart, but he’d f***ing broken through them, claiming every part of me and taking no prisoners.

Ryker
You’re in my head, soul, and heart, Kane Matthews, and where you are, I need to be.”

Trials and tribulations try to keep these two apart, but love brings them back together into an explosive HEA!

Take your 1-click finger, activate it, and press it to read this book, you will not regret it!

I came across this book by mere chance when browsing through various M/M authors and I’m glad I gave it ago. I’ve never read a book by this author but I loved her writing style.

Kane’s past still weighs heavily on him preventing him from truly opening up and being in a loving relationship. He’s lived life screwing around, never allowing anyone to get close but that’s until the day he meets Ryker.

Ryker wants a loving man to be his partner but the cocky, dominant cop is everything he doesn’t want yet he cant seem to stop thinking about Kane.

Can two men who are looking for completely different things find something truly special together?

I adored Ryker; he was sweet, caring and sensitive. Every time Kane hurt and pushed Ryker away, I sensed Ryker’s heart breaking and hurting. There were times I wanted to smack Kane for always taking the easy way out. These two guys had phenomenal chemistry - I thought my ovaries were gonna explode from the heat these two were generating lol.

Kane’s insecurities and conflicted emotions were captured perfectly.

I adored Ryker’s sweet family - they were fun, supportive and loving.

This was a sweet yet emotional read with lots of highs and lows. I thoroughly enjoyed it and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it.

Jaclyn brings us one more awesome book to this great series – Kane’s awakening is all that I was expecting and so much more!
Kane is cocky, witty, arrogant, and carry himself with all the self-assurance of a king!!! At least that’s the façade he shows to the world. Inside himself, it’s another story… he still carries inside the scars of a previous relationship, the one that molded him into the person he is now… He doesn’t need anyone, he doesn’t want anyone, he’s way better by himself.
Ryker couldn’t be more different from Kane… He was devoted to his family, he was looking to find the “other half of his soul”, a guy to grow old with… then… he found Kane…
These two can set water on fire!, They are so hot and explosive together, that their supposed “one night stand” turned into so much more…
I fell head over hills for Kane on the Preface of this book, and I swear there’s no one that deserves more to love and be loved than him... Even when I wanted to smack Kane upside the head, I couldn’t refrain from loving him.
This book took me into a wonderful journey into Kane and Ryker’s lives, and I swear I loved every step of the way.
Don’t miss this wonderful book…

LOVED IT!!! I enjoyed this story. It was HOT, very sexy, passionate, emotional and funny too. This book deals with abuse...emotional and sexual. Humiliation too. Reading those moments were very hard and painful...knowing that a character I connected with experienced that pain. The MCs Kane and Ryker were so freakin great together and the moment they'd realized it was so amazing. The character of Kane was so damn funny! I loved him. F bombs and all. It's who he was. Funny, sexy, big, scared, strong, with a filthy mouth and filthy sexy thoughts. LOL Ryker...I really liked Ryker too. Such the romantic at heart. Wanting love and to be loved. He wanted Kane. Kane wanted Ryker...but it was going to take a little more time to admit that and trust that need. This story was well written and touching. If I weren't laughing out loud, I had tears in my eyes from anger or frustration. This was a great read for sure. It was great that Jaclyn Osborn included characters from the previous books in the series. It was good to know how they're doing. I'm looking forward to the next book in this series (book #4) and hope the author will include updates on Kane and Ryker going forward as well.

4+stars for Kane ' s Awakening!

Jaclyn Osborn ' s latest masterpiece is romantic, funny, and filled with plenty of steamy romance. Kane ' s past is heartbreaking to read. His journey to overcome his relationship issues is well written. Ryker has his own self doubts to work through as well. Watching the two of them work out their differences, and grow into a bonded trusting couple is a long and bumpy read. I couldn't put this book down, and read it in one sitting. Michael, Gabriel, Zack and Jackson all appear in this story as well. It's good to visit them again, and see how both couples are progressing. Well written, and look forward to further books written by Ms Osborn.

Kane doesn't believe in love. Sex? Yes! He's the king of hook ups, but never takes it any further. All bets are off when he meets Ryker. There is just something special about the hopeless romantic lawyer. He makes Kane want more. Despite his fear of commitment because of an unhealthy past relationship Kane learns that he wants and deserves more.

This one had a lot more balance to it and I was able to easily connect with the characters, even if I didn't always agree with them. The friendship with Devon at the end bugs me a bit though. I can see forgiving and moving on from it, but them winding up as friends was too far for me.

OMG! Jaclyn has done it again!!!

I don't know where to begin. Ryker, successful lawyer and father of twins he adored was a romantic who was searching for the love of his life. One night in a club he meets Kane, no strings, hit it once and move on. Kane has demons from his past that refuse to let him find a happily ever after he feels he doesn't deserve. Ryker has his work cut out for him but he knows there is more to Kane . This is a story about learning to trust and finding the one person that is everything.

Can you shut up I’m trying to propose here

Ahh Kane. I heard so much about you from your small conversations with Jaclyn and dare say I’ve gotten to know you a little. Or so I thought. I should’ve known from reading some of Jaclyn’s other works that there would be many layers to the character you would be but I was blown away by the real you. I takes a skilled Author to make a character come alive so vividly as you did for me. Live happily after you darling boy.

This was okay. I actually liked it until the end when the inevitable unnecessary "misunderstanding" comes between them and then I really didn't like it when Kane forgave Devon. Some things should not be overlooked, forgotten or forgiven IMO and his behavior is on that list.

I'm sure Devon and Max are slated for a book of their own but I have no intentions of reading it. Devon is despicable. Maybe he can be redeemed to some point but not enough in my opinion to ever be a MC in a romance that I could stomach.

Five stars for a sexy, sizzling romance that begins as a smoking hot one-'n-done encounter between Ryker and Kane that eventually, against Kane's will, evolves into repeat hookups. Of course, feelings, on-the-job dangers, and heroic acts complicate the fantastic sex and perfect friends-with-benefits relationship between our two equally gorgeous protagonists. Their story and adventures make this a page turner, and their journey mixed with their electric chemistry ensure the five-star rating is well deserved.

Stubborn cops need love, too

This story was so good! The hard-headed cop felt like he couldn't love. The lawyer only wanted to find a man to settle down with. They were never meant to be. Or were they? After a one night stand led to something much more, these guys managed to realize they were exactly what the other needed in their life. The steamy sex scenes aside, the love was a slow burn, and the story has a couple of bumps along the way before the cop and the lawyer get their happily ever after.

Oh my.... Half the time I didn't know if I wanted to slap the cockiness out of Kane or hug him to pieces. My poor broken man... I loved Ryker right away & I'm glad he spoke up for himself & told Kane like it is. Lol. Match made in heaven. Loved the book, it was hard to read at the beginning, a little a ways in & a bit closer to the end there . I cried to much. It was a great story & I so loved the ending! This was an awesome book! I loved both characters. Especially in romances, I really appreciate when an author keeps the story realistic and I really felt like she did that here. I have not read many books where one of the main characters had kids, I was a little nervous about it but it was a great addition to the story!

Jaclyn O never disappoints me! She has IT! Her characters can take me through a wide range of emotions in just one chapter! I wanted to throttle Kane many, many times... and I also wanted to just give him a hug. Ryker.... such a love...i wouldn't mind a short follow-up story with the entire family! Highly recommend!
