Christmas: The Greatest Gift

Rate this book
Whether you love it or loathe it Christmas is certainly hard to ignore. There are parties and plays to attend, shopping and decorating to organise as well as all that food to eat and presents to receive.

But amongst all the wrappings and trimmings the whisper of hope, joy and peace can be hard to hear, let alone understand.

In this short and readable book, Paul Williams 'peels off the sellotape' and 'rips open the paper' from the Christmas message. You’ll discover the greatest gift at the heart of Christmas and how it can transform how you celebrate Christmas this year.

This is the soft, feel-good, easy gospel. Jesus wants you to choose him so he can give you a better life. Something is missing from your life? Add Jesus.

It leaves out a conviction of sin and faith in Christ, no dying to self, no justification.
For what it is worth, the author is Anglican, I am not.

Book quotes:
"Jesus is so confident that he is what we’re looking for that he urges us not to look anywhere else for that missing ingredient in life."
"His claim is to be able to give us a quality and quantity of life that will never leave us wanting more."
"We are in need of someone to save us from the very serious problem of having pushed God out of our lives."
"Eternal life is brilliant. It’s not just life that goes on forever and ever, but it is a quality of life. It is to experience and enjoy the life that we want deep down – a life that is deeply and fully satisfying and fulfilling all the time. It is a life of perfect paradise, when individuals will never want for anything."
"God loves you so much that he wants you to have that life"
"Though he was without sin, he died for all our mistakes in life – especially for our rebellion against God."
"Wonderfully, the Bible also tells us that, as promised, Jesus rose back to life after three days, opening up the way for us to enjoy the same eternal life."
"We should be rejected by God and perish for all the things we’ve said, thought and done that hurt others, not to mention the times we’ve pushed God out of our lives."
"So don’t reject Jesus. Don’t look at him and think to yourself, ‘What would I want him for?’ Take the gift."
"It is only those who receive Jesus as their Saviour and believe in his name, trusting all he has accomplished for them on the cross, who will receive God’s gift of becoming his child."
"To have God’s gift, you have to take it!"
"And this how you receive it: Admit that you have sinned and rejected God."
"I want to receive Jesus into my life, to direct my life, for the rest of my life."

Decent evangelistic booklet. It is somewhat heavy on self-deprecating, Christmas stories and somewhat light on Scripture and explanation though.

Summary: The surprise of Christmas is that the baby born is God. As the Light of the World and Bread of Life, he reveals the purpose of life and can satisfy our appetite for life. Our sin ruins not only Christmas, but also our relationship with God. But Jesus took our punishment because he loves us. To have Jesus’ gift, you have to accept it. It ends with a prayer to pray.
