To silly to finish reading

Two dimensional characters, almost every paragraph contains tired clichés and really stupid dialogue. I am about to give up on the whole Kutherian thing, the books just keep getting worse.

This was a pretty entertaining sci-fi space opera. The plot had me hooked right away since Teach was a down and out hero brought back to his glory. Kind of like Han Solo. It was action packed though there were a few lulls. I liked the different aliens and the characters were likable. I usually reach for more fantasy focused books so sci-fi space stuff isn’t really my thing but there was a lot of action and along with the humor inserted in all the right places this was a fun experience. I’m a huge Sarah Noffke fan and though I enjoyed this collaboration it’s not my favorite of her work.

I would like to thank the author/narrator/publisher for generously providing me with a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an unbiased and honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

An easy reading space opera built upon characters with quirks. The storyline builds upon itself to make for an interesting read.

From the ultra creative minds of Michael Anderle, Sarah Noffke and J.N. Chaney, comes a slew of butt-kicking characters in this rockin' new spin-off! A deadly terrorist group is taking out human colonies in the Etheric Federation. Due to the peace treaty, the Federation can't respond -- at least not officially. That's where General Lance Reynolds comes in. Along with Commander Julianna Fregin -- a genetically modified super soldier -- Reynolds recruits Captain Edward Teach. Once one of the greatest pilots of the Federation, Teach has spent the last decade drinking and fighting on the outler rim. Together, they go on a perilous mission to stop pirates hell-bent on usurping the galaxy and imprisoning its occupants. Both strong and vulnerable, the strengths of the characters lie in their cohesive ability as a team. There's never a dull moment, as the action is turned on full-throttle and continues throughout. Wildly entertaining on all fronts, FORMATION: Ghost Squadron Book 1, will have lovers of fun-filled Sci-Fi adventures waiting with baited breath for its next installment.

Didn't bother to finish

I can't say whether it is the overwhelming number of books set in this "universe" or the "kurtherian gambit series" in general but there is too much and this book is nothing special. It seemed forced from the git go taking a minor character and putting her with an unknown character and forcing a new story line. The thing of it is the "unknown" character served in the human fleet as a fighter pilot as did the minor character so the should have at least known about each other and she was just annoying and as a former military person I wouldn't volunteer to go on a mission with someone I didn't know nor one I didn't like.

That bit of rambling probably won't help you decide on whether or not to read this book. The original series is excellent and a few of the spinoffs are good. However the universe doesn't flow harmoniously in the authors conglomeration of books. Remember how everyone hated Star Wars episode one....well a lot of these books fall in that category.

My original Formation audiobook review and many others can be found at Audiobook Reviewer.

First of all, I want to mention that I decided to listen to this book because I really admire Noffke and Channey's work. I was not familiar with the Kurtherian Gambit series, so I took a bet on this one.

It is an action-packed space opera with likable but also archetypal characters. We have the old hero, now an antihero, and the beautiful and skillful female counterpart. There are many fights, hilarious moments, and a couple of twists that will delight many. Also mentions about some of the characters in the mainKurtherian Gambit series, so this will be a pleasant read for the loyal fans.

From the point of view of a Noffke and Channey's fan, the book is a bit disappointing. It's not that I didn't enjoy it but one of the things I enjoy the most from these two authors are their characters, which are usually quite developed and easy to connect to. This didn't happen for me here, the characters are one-dimensional, and despite their funny dialogs, I didn't much care for them.

Chris Abernathy's narration was also okay. His character interpretations were really good but his voice range quite limited. His female voices were not great and sounded like the male characters, moreover, the male characters sounded all quite similar, which caused me some troubles to follow some dialogs. The audio production had no issues.

All in all it was an okay book, light and unpretentious, enjoyable but forgettable.

I don't usually read/listen to this genre of Space Opera, although I am a longtime fan of all things Star Trek. The main reason that I decided to listen to this book is that I love other books written by Sarah Noffke and J.N. Chaney.

I 'm glad that I gave this book a try because I thoroughly enjoyed it! At times, I was reminded of Star Wars, then Star Trek, then a thousand other great Sci-Fi series.

The writing was great (as usual), the descriptions of the alien lifeforms was wonderful and the action was plentiful. If you are looking for a thoroughly entertaining romp into space, give this one a listen. I loved the dialogue (can definitely see Sarah's hand in that!) with just the right amount of snarkiness to keep me engaged.

I can see that I will have to continue this series. Wildly fun, great adventure and aliens that look like octopi? Of course, I'm there! And I wondered when Edward Teach would become Blackbeard!

Chris Abernathy does an awesome job of narration and added a lot to this book. Loved it from all angles!

An entertaining and enjoyable first story in the Ghost Squadron series. As threats from unknown sources threaten the safety of Federation space, General Lance sets the ball rolling to form a secret “hit squad” to try to combat these threats and keep the Federation citizens safe. I loved the quirky characters, the humour and the mix of human, alien and AI in this story. Julianna leaves you wondering as to her advancements and you get the feeling there is more to her has been revealed, and Eddie makes you laugh out loud. Action, intrigue, battles and entertaining characters form the lively start of what is going to be a great series.

Great read

I've never wrote on the comments but felt compelled to on this one because I've never felt like I knew the new characters this quick. And enjoyed the older characters returning. I've read almost all the series starting with death becomes her. Being middle age I never expected to enjoy these types of book. Congrats on good writing, enjoyable characters. Please keep writing ( as fast as u can). I would recommend this series to all the readers out there

A new series which has a ring of familiarity to it because I’ve kind of read the same theme in other books. The premise to this story is that a down and out ex-military Captain by the name of Edward (Eddie) Teach, has been found by a General Lance Reynolds and Commander Julianna Fregin. They found him in a bar on an out of the way planet just as he got in a huge fight with some alien Kezzin, well, three of them to be exact. When Julianna showed up, it didn’t go well for the Kezzin.

Their purpose in finding Eddie was to recruit him into a super secret organization that would fight the new Federations battles without anyone knowing they were part of the Federation. Humanity had just came out from the Ethric Empire to join in this new Federation with a number of alien civilizations. One of the stipulations in that Federation charter stated that humanity and in particular, humans couldn’t use their military might to attack other civilizations. They were there only to keep the peace in their own territory. But, lately the Kezzin were raiding human colonies and killing every last being. That had to be stopped and Eddie along with Julianna were the start of a team that was going to stop these kind of actions.

They would be funded by General Reynolds and supported with equipment and as many personnel as he could quietly assign to them. But, they couldn’t be known as Federation military or have any known affiliation with the Federation.

So now Eddie along with Julianna have to gather a team to work with and accomplish missions they are fed by General Reynolds. They are given some early missions which they accomplish rather easily. Julianna is an “enhanced human” much more capable than she appears. Eddie isn’t enhanced, but he’s quite capable in his own right. They seem to make a good pairing right from the start. It’s puzzling to understand this rank structure. While Eddie is referred to as a Captain, Julianna is called a Commander. If Eddie’s rank is Army, then Julianna outranks him, but that’s not the way General Reynolds treats them. While he says they are co-commanders, Eddie is eventually given direct command of a previously destroyed human battleship. So, this is a little confusing. And, even on the battleship, he is the Captain, but doesn’t actually act like he’s in charge. Also, he leaves the battleship to go on missions without indicating who is in charge while he’s gone. It seems like the author left out a character who should be commanding the battleship while supporting Eddie and Julianna.

Still, this is the start of a pretty good series, if things don’t get too easy. So far every mission they have been on has gone perfectly although not exactly according to plan. There’s also a lack of attitude about everything they do. They’re all 100% loyal to their mission and the General and there’s no infighting or back-biting of any kind. They do recruit a particular non-human who tries to talk tough or rough, but he doesn’t carry it off well. I don’t know what it is, but this whole story seems a little off; like these people are just too good to be true. I don’t know how to describe it. Eddie seems so enamored with the famous General Reynolds that if he told him to jump off a cliff, the would do it without thinking. He also doesn’t realize that Julianna is a very good looking woman. There’s nothing between them and probably won’t ever be. This books just seems to clean to get them together in a steamy scene.

Ok, so there’s already a second book, “Age of Expansion: Exploration - The Ghost Squadron, Book 2” which I have and will probably start reading very soon. I wonder why it takes three authors to write these books?

Summary:
At first I wasn’t sure about Eddie, but when he stood up to take care of the aliens who destroyed a colony of humans I was hooked. Eddie reminds me of an old fashioned sheriff who stand up for those who need his protection doing what others are not willing to do. I enjoyed that even though he lived at the edge of human space he loved all things from Earth especially Pepsi. His very desire to save others was what lead him to General Lance Reynolds thus changing the course of his and others lives. The General was looking for a leader of a group to protect and avenge anyone who would hurt members of humanity, but needed to keep their activities hidden. Thus begins what looks to be an incredible series. I some ways Eddie reminds me of Captain Kirk from the Star Trek series only edgier. Add to that, unique aliens, a mechanic who looks almost like an octopus, enhanced humans, and two advanced artificial intelligences fighting for the right in outer space. What more could you want?

I read this in audiobook format and the reader did an incredible job giving each character a unique flare that brought them to life.

"Puppies don't purr, they bark."
The old Empire has been replaced by the Federation, with emphasis on all places and species living in peace and harmony. At least, that is the theory. But something far more sinister than occasional pirates and smugglers is threatening stability, the Hassan peoples are becoming ever more agressive. Although appearance and beaurocracy prevent any official intervention, a mercenary group can go where the government officially cannot; so an old soldier hero from a decade or more ago is sought out to form a covert group of intel gathering spies and, if necessary, to intervene illicitly to keep the peace.
The man selected is Eddie, one time Captain, superior pilate with 57 authenticated kills to his name , famous for caring for and being loved by his men. Since leaving the military ten years before, he'd led a drfter's life, moving between stations and bars, looking for fights. He had just found one when General Reynolds arrived on the scene with an augmented female agent, Julianna, to recruit him for the job. Lured by the thrills of again having his own superbly advanced ship and a mission to help others, Eddie quickly retrains and with Julianna sets out for a major trouble spot to uncover what is really happening there. And to recruit more people, alien or human, to their team.

Eddie is the typical fast talking, semi comedic character, who fights hard but beneath the joking has an heart of gold. His lovely sidekick, Julianna, more sedate and with a real killer instinct, is much (much) older having had implant upgrades, including being able to drink all the alcohol she likes (and she likes) without getting drunk, a useful attribute when working alongside Eddie. The aliens are interesting, the battle scenes immaginative and the story overall is enough to hold this reader's interested attention.

The book is performed by Chris Abernathy, who throws himself with enthusiasm into the individualistic voicing of every character, alien or human, whilst reading the connecting text with well paced clarity and understanding. My one dislike of his narration was the voice he gives to Eddie, the main protagonist, who appears always to be shouting everything he says. Although the volume is not raised, the timbre of his utterances was, for this reader, disconcerting and damaged any empathy that might otherwise have been felt for his character.

This was a god series start, enjoyable and with an intriguing twist whicl certainly makes me look forward to reading book two of the Ghost Squadron. Recommended to all space saga fans.

From bland to bad

Now I remember why I felt wary about this universe. After slogging through poor writing, limited character types and a stealth plot I decided never to waste time on the series. Unfortunately I forgot why I disliked the series.

I just finished book one of a new series in the Kurtherian universe and it was a pleasant breezy little adventure story. So I tried this one expecting a similar experience. This book reminded me of what I disliked about the Kurtherian experience.

The writer uses the phrase "kick ass" in dialogue repeatedly, once as often as twice in four pages. The writer makes a jab at political correctness from one alien who insisted that another alien mock the speaker's appearance. There follows sentence after painful sentence about the inability of members from different species to stomach the appearance of another species. Any opinion to the contrary is crazy "political correctness". I had to stop reading at that point.

I once had a client who complained at the injustice of being fired for telling jokes about black people to his black coworkers. I was unable to help him admit that verbal expression of racism wasn't a matter of political incorrectness but a matter of severely internalized racist perception. I see where Noftke got that stretch of dialogue above. Imagine that human genetic and cultural diversity is seen as akin to aliens "attempting" to adjust to members of different species (after thousands of years of interaction, no less). I now know Noftke much better than I wanted to.

I also remember how in this universe the U.S. managed to corner the market in expansion into space. I also remembered that in this reality, no one in the U.S. is named Zilwicki, Capaldi, Obama, Petraeus or Kardashian. Fortunately, in this universe the empress of all mankind is a kind but ruthless, cute but awesomely smart, blond (I think) American girl. Thank goodness, we have been saved.

There's more that could be said but what's the point. Noftke and her collaborator before her have said it all.

I am really liking this series, the author show many different characters from many different places and how they all pull together for one common goal….to save man and alien kind. I love how they bring back people who have work on these issues, such as making the ship, warriors and bring new characters who add so much to the story line. There are some touch and goes, lost of suspense and action, new technology as well as old that blend together very well.

Formation
In Formation we get to see how it all started and watch the gang get together as they take on the faceless enemy not knowing who is behind the attack, could be life or death if they trust the wrong people. A long the way they bring in new members to help, some are a little surprising as they build their team kicking butt and taking no names. This is starting out to be an exciting series that has a little of everything, there are heart stopping moments, suspense, a little mystery and a whole lot of adventure. What I love the most is the humor even when death might be close, you can’t help but chuckle.

The narrator does a good job, I really like his character voices and the emotion he brings to the audio. However Eddie’s voice seems more a child yelling. I do have to say I have started the second book in this series and Eddie’s voice has calm down to a more normal voice with the right blend that makes it a better narration. The rest of the characters voices go well and seem to fit the characters. I can really hear the power they hold, true emotions and the danger they are going through. No repeating of voice, no volume changes, no background noises. With this first audio in the series I give him a 4 start, but as I go into the next one he has much improved.

Love the book, but too many stupid stereotypes

First of all great action throughout the book I loved it, I will read the next book. But there are a few flaws, first of all I have read all the series that contain the first 20 books of the KG you. Queen Bethany and would not have a drunkard or lush working for her in such a vital role. Second of all, no soldier would refuse enhancements that would allow him to become a better soldier., Just look at what bitches went through to become better soldiers for Ba. The fact that Captain teach refuses enhancements stretches incredulity in the KG you universe. I hope you lose the troll of a burned out X vet, it gives all of us X vets a bad name and his cell stereo typical. When I read some of the blurb that teach was supposed to be like Captain Kirk, a bit of a rogue, Captain Kirk was never a drunk, yes he was witty and smart asked but he was never a drunk. As far as I’m concerned Juliana should’ve been the head character. If you’re trying to give us a Han Solo character that’s been done before, find something more original. Don’t get me wrong, I love the book the action sequences were great. Just fix some of the glaring errors in the consistency of the Canon and the way the character should behave. I know this may be a book about redemption, but no military commander worth his salt would put all his eggs in a basket with a character or personnel that may have character flaws such as drunken mess, please fix it.

Black Ops, Sci Fi, Space Opera that sucks you in from the very beginning! I have not read any of the books that go along with this but if you are a lover of the fast paced, action packed, and the crazy characters that go with this type of thing then this is the book for you! Right from the beginning there is a scuffle with some of our main characters. But this is only the start. Our outcast, Eddie, used to be in the Federation but is now doing his own thing but still stands up for what he believes in. He is recruited to do some black ops type of work that involves stopping some bad guys that are doing bad things. He is paired up with Julianna and both are badass! They have been given an opportunity to recruit some diverse people to help them stop this quiet war and save some innocents. But nothing they do is going to be “normal”. Two of the recruits are of a different alien race and how they come upon them is nothing but out of the ordinary. The banter between all of them, during conflicts and when they are relaxing, is so fun! I kind of imagine these stories being a cross between Star Wars and Guardians of the Galaxy. There is never a dull moment with this team and I doubt there ever will be. I am looking forward to seeing what else the Ghost Squadron come up against. Must read!

Here we go again with another Kurtherian Gambit series. This book has no less than three people, including Michael Anderle himself, claiming to be co-authors. I believe this is the first time I read anything from Sarah Noffke who is the first name of the list. Well, it’s not really a bad book as such but I cannot say that I am overly impressed by this work of Sarah. I obviously do not know how much is done by Sarah and how much is done by the second author on the list, J.N. Chaney, but I am pretty sure that Michael Anderle had next to nothing to do with the actual writing.

It is a simple, pretty typical, action story about a main protagonist who is recruited into a secret organisation, trained and sent out to clobber bad guys, secretly of course. The book is set in the Kurtherian universe and a few main characters from the main story arc makes an appearance. So far so god.

However, the book feels more like a TV-show script than a book. Things are happening way too fast a lot of the time. The “training” of our protagonist is so short and superficial that it is laughable. There could have been so much more done with this. Especially in the area of the characters and their development.

The action is pretty much done in the same way, superficial, not very intelligent and, again, feels more like a TV-show script than a book. Essentially the author(s) takes a decent idea for story, runs it in a mixer with some good stuff from the Kurtherian universe books and pours it out in book form.

It is not a bad book but it is really not worth writing home about either. A few hours of half-decent entertainment. It is however exactly this kind of book that makes me worry that Anderle is diluting the Kurtherian “brand name” with mass-produced thirteen on a dozen novels where his name is on the cover but nothing more.

Hmmmmmm

This was a good story. It had characters that I've met, and enjoyed, before in other series, and some new ones that I've never met, but hope to learn more of in future stories.

I kept reading until the end, because the story was good enough for that. But, for all of that, there was something missing, and I'm not, quite, sure what it was.

In one way, it felt as though all of the characters weren't fully formed, as yet, which I guess time, and more adventures can deal with. But I had the feeling that the aliens were more like humans, in costume.

Sadly, it felt as though there just wasn't enough differences to tell them apart from the humans. Physically, yes, but not where it counted.

Like I said, that didn't stop me reading until the end, because the premise of the story was sound, and interesting enough for me to want to know what happens next, hence the four stars.

I actually hate to criticise a book set in the Kurtherian Universe but, despite this being readable, there really was something missing from it, and that saddens me.

Looking at my reading list, the next two books to read are the Bob's Bar 1 & 2, before going back to the second book in the Ghost Squadron series: Exploration.

I just hope that, whatever troubled me with this first book of the series, is gone by the time I read the second book!

This book did not feel like a “Sara Noffke” book to me. I have not previously read/ listened to anything written by the other two authors. It’s quite a bit cookie cutter and predictable and the dialogue is pretty generic and basic. There’s not much detail about this world or depth to the characters- although I’m curious about their story, I don’t truly feel attached to them. Despite this, I am intrigued by the story. I was thinking I would give one more book a try to see if it improved. Then I learned Sara Noffke did not have as much of a role in writing this book as she did with the rest in this series. That makes me much more interested to listen to subsequent books! I’ve previously listened to eleven books by Sara Noffke and loved them all.

This is the first book I’ve listened to by this narrator (Chris Abernathy). He does a pretty good job reading this book. He has many distinct character voices, and did well reading the story to submerge the reader into it. What I found awkward was the voices he choose for Hatch and Eddie. Their voices are kinda high and it was as though they were always yelling (even when he was hungover).

There are no explicit sex scenes. There is a lot of fighting but not overly descriptive violence. There is swearing.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and voluntarily left this unbiased review.

3.5 stars for this one. This was my first foray into the Kurtherian Gambit series. I started on this one as I love all of Sarah Noffke's work. For me, this wasn't the same standard as her dream traveller work, but it was still an enjoyable read/listen (I listened to the audio). I enjoyed the space setting and the many different alien species. I enjoyed the Eddie/Julianna relationship, Eddie was a lot of fun and Julianna grounded him. Pip the AI was good fun also. A nice start to this Ghost Squadron series.

This is a parody of Sci-Fi action. The two protagonists make no plans, dive headlong into an enemy base, charge the guns as if they are immortal, every one of their shots is on target and none of the enemies' shots hit the mark. Those enemies are confused and stupid. This is a children's cartoon put to paper.

I don't mind a novice author making an honest, fumbling attempt at fiction but this is just lazy pandering. And to make matters worse, the author is pandering to a patronizing stereotype of a science fiction reader. Please respect the reader more and make an effort.

I can't believe the rate you guys are turning these awesome books out. The characters are well developed and the fast pace action is non-stop. Keep up the great work and I will do my best to stay caught up with all the different series!!

Intriguing new series

In the KG universe there is so many feeder and fill in series its hard to know where to start but like the bad company this is one that makes sense as when ever their is ops their is black ops.
For this one i can see the possibilities coming to fruition ,and i can see how this will fit in well so although not 5 stars i shall follow as the relationships will make this a good series to read and follow.

Nice

I found the story was pretty good I just wasn't happy with a number of what I perceive as slights to an established character. And the term Equals was thrown around a few times but was mainly only paid lip service. And she was made basically a tag along. I am hoping that book 2 corrects some of these issues.

Possible Spoiler

I wondered about Captain Edward Teach's name. Was it intended to invoke that of Blackbeard the Pirate? The answer was eventually forthcoming. I liked the humor, action, and story line. The characters are well written and the military aspects of the space opera quite interesting. I very much look forward to the next book.

Great start

I am excited about the Ghost Squadron series. It is well-written and moves along at a good pace. It is also a bit of a change to have characters who don’t have all the augmentation of, say, the FRG folks. It’s fine if the Ghost Squadron hits the pod-doc in the future, but they kick their fair share of ass without it.

My first read from the collaborative efforts of authors Sarah Noffke, J.N. Chaney & Michael Anderle. The book takes off like a jet from an aircraft carrier and builds & gets faster from there! Well-written with well-developed characters. An exciting, enjoyable read. Narrator Chris Abernathy adds greatly to the book’s enjoyment.

Entirely standard fare. Human bioengineering. Alien races. Secret conflict. Shadow organizations. Horribly flat main character (think Buck Rogers.. or worse, Zapp Branigan but with the skills to backup the trash talk).

Interesting twist at the end. Willing to read further to find out how it resolves. Hope the series gets better.

If the Authors would drop the ridiculous profanity to attract the LLS the story might be a little interesting. Also expand the characters. Being from a military back ground I know that 3 people can't get the resources needed from one man even if he is the daddy of a long gone empress that must be millinia years old by now. Not real believable guys!
