When June Brandt is taking a little time off and goes hiking, she meets Alex Weaver when he drops by the cabin that she is staying at. When Alex informs her that he is there to investigate a the death of a grizzly bear and asks her to show him the location, she goes a long and helps him out. After finding the grizzly's body and investigating it, they determine its the work of a poacher...
After the investigation and having no leads to follow Alex and June go there separate ways. But Alex can't keep June out of his mind and he finds ways to get to know her. When another bear is reported being dead, he asks June to come along and help them. Which in turn has them being targeted by the poachers. So now they have to find a way to get the poachers captured... And figure out where the feelings they have developed for each other will led them...

This was an interesting book to read. I like how Alex and June's relationship develops, and how it wasn't rushed into it. Though they both have different opinions about love and marriage they were able to overcome it and come to an understanding about their future. I really enjoyed June's family members and they were fun side characters.
The story plot flowed really well. There wasn't any added storyline that distracts you from the main story and everything comes together by the end. To me it become a little obvious who the villain was towards the beginning, so I wasn't kept in suspense on who it could be. So, I did look forward to how the ones responsible got their come-up-ping's.

June Brandt was a natural resources student that decided to get some much needed peace and quiet by climbing Longworth Mountain. Alex Weaver conservation officer for ministry of the environment-Fish and wildlife went to Longworth Mountain for a different reason ---poachers. They meet at a cabin and decide to locate the carcass of the bear together. That is the beginning of their love story. It seems a little odd that looking for a dead bear can lead to romance but the author manages to pull it off.

June and Alex go on to dodge multiple attacks from those that want them to stop investigating the poaching. It may the attack on their hearts that is the most successful. Despite them both being very wary of love and the heartache that it can bring they realize that love has indeed found them. I really liked that June and Alex were from two very different family backgrounds. The author did a great job of showing how Alex’s family made him reluctant to trust love and June’s family made her crave authentic love. They did seem to have great chemistry in the bedroom. However, outside of the bedroom it just seemed like the romance was blah or nonexistent. I wish the author would have focused more on the couple rather than conservation and the suspense element. I felt like I never fully became vested in their characters because there wasn’t a lot of character development and interaction between the two of them. Most of the focus was on them solving the case rather than them as a couple pursuing a romance.

I enjoyed the element of surprise when I the person responsible for poaching was revealed. Overall, this book was a good quick read with suspense and romance.

This book has action, romance, suspense, beautiful setting in the Canadian wilderness, and loads of adventure. Alex Weaver is a Conservation officer. June Brandt is a Natural Resources student. When June and Alex meet, over a poached Grizzly bear, it’s an instant attraction.

They have so much in common: a love and respect for the great outdoors, a keen interest in hiking and other recreational activities. However, they have a few major differences. One of those is family. June is from a large, loving, and fun (almost quirky) family. Alex’s family relationships would best be described as estranged.

Illegal bear poaching is the glue that keeps these two lonely hearts together. They want to bring the poacher(s) to justice. Then a series of accidents start happening to June. She is almost run over by a motorcyclist. She gets a shredded tire and while changing it, someone shoots off a gun near her. While she and Alex are hiking in the woods, another gunshot goes off nearby. When another CO is found murdered, Alex decides he is bad luck for June and backs out of her life– for her own good. Even if it just about kills him.

June’s misaligned trust in a friend causes her to need Alex– in a matter of life and death.

Mountain Fire was a fantastic read I would recommend for anyone who likes Canadian settings, outdoorsy locales, and characters so very similar yet so very different.

This updated version of the writer's first novel involves a suspenseful search for poachers in the Canadian Rockies. The first scene introduces natural resources student June, enjoying the beautiful vistas while hiking, when she comes across a site at which a grizzly bear has been killed by poachers. Suspense builds as she meets conservation officer Alex, who has been tipped off about the kill and is searching for the kill site, and the pair is then shot at. The mystery continues to build through threats and the murder of another conservation officer, as does the relationship between June and Alex. The descriptions of the scenery are almost lyrical, the characters of June and Alex are well developed and sympathetic, and the situations in which they find themselves are believable.
I received an ARC, but am providing my honest, if belated, opinion

4.5 stars!

Living near a forest myself (albeit without bears, but plenty of other wildlife) I really enjoyed the setting for Mountain Fire. The way the author, Brenda Margriet, describes the hike that June takes at the beginning of the story makes me feel like I'm right there! Throughout the story, her vivid writing style draws you in as if you're experiencing what June and Alex are experiencing. Both the good and the bad...

With twists and turns in the plot, discovering who was doing the poaching and watching the relationship between Alex and June unfold, you will not want to put this one down until you finish!

I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy of this book, however, this is my honest opinion.

This was a pretty quick and decent read. There was suspense and romance. The author was very good at describing the scenery but on some level, there was too much detail that wasn’t pertinent or maybe it was meant to throw you off of the poacher’s / poachers trail. Example: description of passing a truck hauling a motor home with Texas plates (never figured out why the mention of Texas plates). I didn’t really feel the deep level connection of June and Alex, especially since they just met. It might be that I’m older and I don’t relate to someone in their early to mid twenties. One of the things that I can say is that it wasn’t hard to read (there are some books that I can’t even get through) and this wasn’t one of them. There seems to be a lot of potential in the author’s writing.

June had a few days off and went hiking. Stumbling onto a kill site for a bear she goes to report it. While showing Alex where the bear was they are shot at. June and Alex get to know each other and they realize they are not safe. Murder mystery and relationship are what makes this story spell binding loved it

This is the first book by Ms Margriet I have read and I would definitely give her another try. The story I liked because it wasn't your run of the mill story line. Though the love scenes did tread on the line of being cliche. These aren't perfect characters but that does help to make them more believable. The environmental aspect of the story grabbed me and kept me riveted. I did figure out most of the twists but one still got me which is always nice.

Here is where I had the major issue with the book. So read no further is you don't want a spoiler. That June would go up into the mountains by herself, when she has been the target of two earlier attacks, is just silly. I don't care how self reliant you are, a smart person airs on the side of caution even when they don't want to let a killer rule their life. Hiking up into the mountains by ones self was the height of stupidity. And where I almost put down the book. But I read on and I am glad I did.

I look forward to more works by this author and to see how she grows as an author. This is an author to keep an eye on.

This Canadian romance between a natural resource student and conservation officer was a good read. This is the first book I've read by this author. I immediately liked both June and Alex. Together they try to hunt down a poacher targeting grizzly bears.

The lengthy descriptions at time turned into purple prose and didn't help the slow pace of the story. I liked how this romance promoted an appreciate for nature and animals. I expected the action and mystery elements in this book to be a bit stronger than they were. Still, I'd recommend readers give this book a try, especially if they are nature/animal lovers.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Mountain Fire

ok had actually read this book once before and was well into it before the village's questionable motivation cured my amnesia. Set in British Columbia the heroine is loosely aligned to the University and a conservationist group. The hero is a Conservation Officer/heliocopter pilot. Someone is killing grisly bears and for some reason trying to kill June. She suspects that it is some beyond suspension, but who. The scenery is the star of this book, and out shines both the romance and the mystery.

My first book by Brenda Margriet and I'm guessing it won't be my last if this one is any indication. I admit I am a sucker for Canadian Mountains, wildlife and a good dose of action/mystery and a touch of sensual romance. This book had the lot and I thoroughly enjoyed Brenda's writing style which can, for me, make or break a storyline. The mystery and action starts from chapter one and continues right to the last chapter and best of all the book does not rely on pages of meaningless sex to cover for a lackluster plot. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the above

This book wasn't for me. The book had suspense but I had it figured out early in the book. From there it jumped from the romance part to a piece of the poaching part of the story. There is romance but I prefer more suspense and twists. The author did a good job of describing the terrain. It was a good story but just not my type of suspense/thriller that I like to read.
