Megan’s temper lands her in Girderon Academy, an exclusive school founded in a town of misfit supernatural creatures. It’s the one place she should be able to fit in, but she can’t. Instead, she itches to punch the smug sheriff in his face, pull the hair from a pack of territorial blondes, and kiss the smile off the shy boy’s face. Unfortunately, she can’t do any of that, either, because humans are dying and all clues point to her.

With Megan’s temper flaring, time to find the real killer and clear her name is running out. As much as she wants to return to her own life, she needs to embrace who and what she is. It’s the only way to find and punish the creature responsible.

I liked it. My biggest issue with this book was that it had no table of contents. That really bothered me especially considering the format I was reading it on. Btw it has 24 chapters. 3.75 star rating.

This ended up being better than I thought it would. Megan has anger issues. Although, if you've read the description already then you would know that. Her mom takes her to this place and she spends the book figuring out what she is and how to deal. The problem is that people keep showing up dead around her. Of course they all think she did it. I wasn't a fan of the people who run this place and I'm not sure if I want to deal with her teenage angst in the next book.

"Why couldn't I just be like other people my age? Moody but not irrationally angry?"

Fury Frayed is a fun, witty, and interesting world full of out of the ordinary teens. It has just that perfect amount of sexual tension that makes for the perfect YA paranormal romance.  We are introduced to our narrator, Megan, who has quite the temper and is quick to fight. Her mother tries to keep her out of trouble and they move from school district to school district, until finally her mother enrolls Megan in a fancy boarding school. However, this school is not typical at all! It is a place for supernatural kids to learn to enhance and perfect their abilities.

As soon as Megan comes to town, without knowing anyone, and feeling utterly alone, she soon discovers a lot of dead humans. Of course everyone can't help but think it's her, being the new and that temper and all.  Megan makes it her mission to start investigating the murders and to clear her name. Meanwhile, she also finds herself the center of attention for a few of the boys! Oh these boys, strong, brooding...some a little more moral than the others...but one thing is for sure, you will love them!

With a mystery to solve, a fate to discover, and powers to get under control...Megan also has to keep her feelings in check. Luckily, she makes a friend who seems to calm her just through her touch. She also makes a few enemies quite fast as well. I really loved Megan's growth through the book, and sometimes, I wanted to scream at her bad choices, and denseness. However, I think you will really enjoy getting to know all these characters, who are very unique, witty, and seeping sexual tension!

Fury Frayed is a quick, entertaining, and a really fun read! I highly recommend it if you love urban fantasy, mythological influence, and a dose of fun YA tropes. I can guarantee that once you finish you will be on the lookout for book 2!

My new favorite fantasy book!

Megan is absolutely relatable. She is funny, caring, and full of sass. The action is non-stop and the mysteries intriguing. I’ll say no more and let the following excerpt speak for themselves ;)
🔥Genre: YA, Paranormal, Romance
🔥No love triangle nor cheating
🔥No cursing and mild violence
🔥First-person heroine POV
🔥Cliffhanger: none (though I’m more than willing to buy the next book so I can meet these lovable characters again)

Excerpt from the author’s website:
“What was that for?” he asked. Anger had wiped out any hint of mocking curiosity from his tone.

I could also feel the throb in my fist. He had a hard nose.

“To see if you were real.”

“Most people pinch.” He sounded a bit more nasally than he had before.

My imagination was sure good at adding the little details needed to make this all feel real. I didn’t let it distract me from the moment, though.

“Most people don’t walk around in someone else’s backyard while butt naked.” Not that I actually minded that part. His biceps were clearly defined, and his thighs were thicker than my head. Realizing where my gaze had wandered, I quickly looked up again.

He shook his head and released my wrist.

“Where were you going?” he asked.

“To town. Do you own pants?”

“It would be better if you stayed here.”

“For who?”

“You.”

“Stay in a house where a guy shows up naked in the backyard? Yeah, that’s not sounding like a good option.”

“It’s the safest one.”

“Of course you would think that. But since this is my dream, I’m going to see how many more naked men are frolicking around this place.”

He stayed quiet for a moment, studying me. I was just about to turn and walk to the front of the house when he spoke again.

“The people in this town are going to eat you up and spit you out.”

Without warning, he scooped me up and walked into the house with me. In the light of the kitchen, I studied his face. He looked mad, his jaw hard and a frown tugging his lips. Very nice lips. High cheekbones and a strong nose. His gaze flicked down to me just before he started up the stairs. Deep blue eyes. I had amazing taste in dream men.

When he turned to my room, my heart skipped a beat. Was I really going to dream this? A naked man carrying me to bed? I knew where this was headed.”

What are you waiting for? Go buy Fury Frayed!

Thank you Sharon J for recommending this book series to me. This was an amazing read. The story was action-packed and intriguing. It is one of my favourite fantasy/paranormal books I have read. I loved the main character. Megan was really relatable. I thought that she was funny and sassy. I would love to be best friends with this heroine. She is my type of heroine. Also, I loved Oranen and Fenris. Oranen was protective and there for Megan. Fenris was more outgoing and funny. This seems to be a slow-burn romance, and I wonder if there is going to be more romance in the rest of the series. The ending makes me curious to see how book 2 will be like. I am now a fan of Melissa Haag. Also, I cannot wait to read more of her books. Overall, an incredible read.

I'm gonna be honest.
I don't know this author from Adam.
I've never followed her, until today. I bought her book on a splurge of random books I bought all at the same time.
What I can say, is that now that I've read her, there's no going back.
The level of paranormal, fantasy love I have overall, added with this authors writing style and also her ability to add elements I didn't see coming, God.
This book was phenomenal. So much that I had to stop my man and tell him that when we got paid, we were getting a bunch of other books by her. I needed more of this series, these characters, but also her other books. I needed more of this spellbinding writing style.
Author lady, thank you for existing. I've already bought two more of your books I can't wait to buy even more in the future.
Thank you for being a part of my reading journey, but also for creating such gripping story with real characters, especially with this series, strong characters that keep me coming back for more.
Definite five star review here.
And yes, I didn't say a word about the story, and it's because it needs to be read. Especially by people that love paranormal, fantasy, fiction.
Go forth and buy this book, and then the second.
I just hope I don't have to wait long for more.

First, let me state that this is really more like 3.5 stars than 4, but I must, as usual, give the benefit of the half star in the 5-star system. Second, I was able to get this first book in the series for free (thus the only reason I read it), which is why I had it. I normally avoid the teenage coming-of-age genre, particularly female ones (because I can't relate), but the summary had me interested and the investment wasn't large. :-)

I'll start with the bad. This book is WAY too obsessed with physical attributes. Every time our heroine looks at a particular person, all she can see is his physical appearance. Were this a guy staring at a female that way, it'd be repulsively sexist. It is here as well, but...? Also, this book wraps up too quickly with an ending that doesn't actually satisfy. Sure, it's meant to make the reader go for the second book, but it just made me feel like the author hit a page or plot limit and wanted to save things for the next book. I'm also not convinced that Megan's (the heroine) actions are not over the top. She's too angry, too flippant, too unrestrained. If her life has been as bad as is indicated, and if her mother was like her, it doesn't hold water for me. Someone should have been working on this girl long before the age of 17.

Now for the good, and why I actually enjoyed the book. First, despite Megan's serious character flaws (and there are many), I was rooting for her. Mostly because I, like Megan, was curious as to what she is (the title of the book didn't ring any bells even though it should have). Second, I liked the intricacies of the play between some of the characters. I thought it could have been less dramatic (more like reality and less like reality TV), but it made for a book that had more to it than the simple murder mystery. Third, and this is most important, once I accepted the "world" this story is taking place in (monsters are real and living among us), there was no suspension of disbelief necessary. Characters (mostly) acted according to how one would expect and dialogue was pretty natural.

All told, this was an enjoyable read. It has the strong heroine (maybe too much), a murder mystery (which actually isn't completely solved here), and a world of mythological creatures with their own natures. I won't be moving on with the series, but if the plot or heroine appeal to you, you probably will enjoy this.

I was so totally in the mood for an easy to read YA with some paranormal love and this book was exactly the right book at exactly the right moment. I almost ordered the next two books in this trilogy already, but I have to wait another week to do so. Until then I hopefully have some other books to distract me, because the urge to read on is strong.

This book is exactly what it sounds to be and seems to be and pretends to be. It's a YA, with loads of teenage angst, some teenage romance, a possible love triangle (I happen to love those), a girl grown up in the human world who has always been different and stood out who's thrown into the supernatural world where she has a lot to learn and a little bit of excitement, action and mystery.

I already knew that Haag had a lovely writing style and she really displays it in this book. Every sentence flows, dialogues sound quite natural and I had absolutely no trouble reading and devouring this book quickly.

That was also because of the main character, Meghan, who's just easy to like and easy to identify with. She's incredibly human, even though she's of course not, and she's a typical teenager. The way she reacts to her new world, to her new friends and her new school feels very natural and realistic and although she's a little more impulsive than I am, she's constantly impulsive and slightly reckless, which makes it a character trait instead of stupidness.

The biggest part of the plot in this book consisted of world building. There was also a little mystery in there to spice things up, but even without it the story was already quite amusing and entertaining and maybe most of all slightly addictive. I can't wait to order the next book and to devour it the same way I did this one.

I want my own Eliana

Megan is tough as nails and constantly angry. It isn't until she attends her new school that she figures out why. There is just so much to say, but none of it can be said without spoiling something. This is a new world, completely unrelated to any of Ms Haag's other series, and it is so rich with promise and potential. I'm anxious to see what's next.

Fury Frayed by Melissa Haag is a fun, adventurous tale that begins to unravel the mysteries behind a hidden town, an abandoned teen with major anger issues and an academy full of mythical creatures.

Megan, the main character, must discover who she is while attempting to navigate an unknown world full of danger. She immediately meets a cute guy, infuriates his mean-girls’ harem, gets thrown into a new and very high school cliquish academy, and stumbles almost literally upon a hottie hero.

Sound like a great start to a novel? It is!

I loved Megan from the start. She is strong, witty, smart, snarky and has major anger issues that lead to some entertaining fights.

A story by Melissa Haag is not complete without a few hot guys. Fenris, the charming wolf-shifter, is awesome. He’s cocky, sexy, and has his own harem, but there’s a softer side to this alpha-wolf. Can’t wait to see more of him.

Oanen is every girl’s dream guy: tall, blonde, big muscles, and super protective. He commands the attention and respect of everyone, but tens to irritate Megan a little. He also is a hugger. ;0)

Eliana is the best friend everyone should have. She is super sweet, loyal, fun, protective and has a way with men. I look forward to seeing more from her. She also teams up with Megan against the Mean girls group.

This book has it all angst, mystery, danger, humor and romance. I liked that the mystery unfolded slowly throughout the book and we had to find out information along with Megan. I cannot wait for book two.

I'll admit, I bought this only because I loved the JO6 series so much, and was going thru withdrawals. the premise, centered around mythology and furies, held little appeal for me.

however, I decided to support one of my favorite authors, in hopes that she will someday return to the JO6 world, and I figured I could take a chance on this new series, after all, if I hate it, I could just move on...

I did not hate it. in fact, I kinda love it. as I said, it centers around a fury. I know nothing about this subject, and very little about mythology, so going in I had pretty low expectations. what a strange and delightful new world we enter into.

I find myself eagerly awaiting the the next books. so thank you MH!

also, there is a bonus JO6 short story at the end, and it's sweet. not what I had hoped it would be, but that seems to be the theme of the series, and that is ok, I suppose it tells what needs to be told. there are more novellas to come in the future we are told, and it will be fun to see it all come together into something new.

highly recommend this new series, give it a try folks:)

Megan is a girl with a temper. After one too many incidents, her mother dumps her off at a house in a town where Megan doesn't know anyone. On her own, Megan picks herself up and faces her new life with guts and humor.

I liked Megan a lot. She's smart and resourceful, and realizes that she can take care of herself. That doesn't stop her from feeling lonely, even though most people tend to piss her off. It isn't long before she makes a couple of friends - and a few enemies.

Megan's first real friend is Eliana. She's very well developed as a character, and has problems and issues of her own. I liked her backstory, and the chemistry she has with Megan.

Not so happy with the male characters. Oanen was pushy, and bossy. No matter how many times Megan told him she wasn't ready, he came back, always in her space. He never backed off, and eventually got her to agree to "date" him. UGH!

Romance in urban-fantasy books rarely work for me. And I can already see a love triangle brewing. The rest of the book was fairly strong with the world building and the friendship between Megan and Eliana. It was an enjoyable read overall.

A good 3.5 stars. I enjoyed this book. It’s mostly clean. There is a bit of a love story in the background. I will be interested to see where this series takes me. It’s definitely fluff. Teenage fluff. But I like to read things that take me away from real life.

I’ve not rated a book 2⭐️ before but I enjoyed them. It introduced me to like a tiny bit of smut and it got my mind off of some bad things that were happening in my life at the time. However I wouldn’t buy the books and I got the first book in the series for free😂

If possible, I'd give this book 4.5 stars. This was a very good read. The story was interesting, the main character was fun, and the supporting/background characters were well written for the most part.

Megan has a bad temper and she can't control it no matter what she does. It doesn't take much to set her off, sometimes describing someone's existence as enough to make her angry. One fight too many has her mom packing up and moving them to the rural middle-of-nowhere town Uttira. There, Megan is left on her own to figure everything out. She starts at a new school where she learns rather quickly that both the town, and she, are a lot more than they seem. And when people start turning up dead shortly after her arrival, her very nature might be the only thing she has to help clear her name.

Now that we've gotten the synopsis out of the way, onto the important stuff. I loved Megan as a main character. She's a breath of fresh air in a sea of main characters who usually fit a certain mold in the genre; nice, kind, confused about why they're different, sometimes passive as others make discoveries for them and help them figure everything out. But not Megan. She's flawed but knows what she wants and says whats on her mind without thought of the repercussions for better or worse. She's also really funny. I really enjoyed watching her adjust to the new town and what she is. I even enjoyed her interactions with queen b**** Audrey. Those were some of the funniest moments for me. Most of all, Megan is very relatable for many people. Even if you don't have anger problems, anyone can identify with her caring nature, sassy attitude, and adventurous outlook.

The background and supporting characters added to the story in a positive way. I seldom felt as if someone was just there to be there, or only for purposes of moving the plot along. It was interesting to learn about the different not-so-mythological creatures in the context of modern-day teenagers in a small-town setting. I also enjoyed the mystery aspect to the story. It was intriguing and kept me interested, yet not done in a melodramatic way. I'm glad because doing so would've changed the whole tone of the book and I wouldn't have been as invested. I know some didn't like how pushy Oanen was, but I thought his overbearing and protective nature clashed well with Megan's personality. Plus, you kind of get the feeling that Oanen's personality has something to do with what he is, much like Megan. So this didn't bother me at all. It was just part of an enjoyable read.

For all it's good points, there's still some bad that kept me from giving this 5 stars. While the characters are definitely the highlight of the book, there are one or two I can think of (but won't say because spoilers) who could've been fleshed out a bit more. Even when they were present for a scene, they didn't have much presence. I felt they could've added a bit more to the story instead of only serving as clues to help Megan discover what she is and who is behind the dead bodies popping up around town. The romance was also sort of muted for my taste with not much happening or only sparse tender moments, but that's more of a subjective thing as someone else might prefer that. Lastly, the mystery of what Megan is kind of loses it's spark early on because the title gives it away. It's like calling a book "Lupine" and trying to make it a mystery what mythological creature the main character is. The author should think about changing it, unless it was supposed to be obvious.

Overall, this was a very enjoyable read. I finished it in only 2 days. You can tell it's an intro to the series, but it's a very good intro. I look forward to the next installment.

I love her earlier work. Touch, The first books from the Jo6 series, the beauty and beast books under her other name. 5 star reads all of them, and the reason being the slower pace, more storytelling, more character depth. I love it when an author takes the time to make me care about the characters they're creating, and that often means delving into the mundane...the day to day. She was great at that early on, but the more I read from her newer releases (the last book in Jo6, the demon series and now this new series) I feel like she's losing that slower, more thought out pace she used to keep. The books are still enjoyable, I will continue to read her (for now) but everything feels a bit rushed and not as fleshed out, which means I cannot care about these new characters as much as I did in her older stories. Still good reads, but they're all solid 4 stars for me now, instead of the 5s I used to give her.

What a fun and interesting new world! Fury Frayed is such a unique book that I literally cannot compare it to any others! If you are looking for a new world with new creatures and all new characters, then you need to pick this book up. It has everything you can ask for. There is tons of action, a bit of mystery, and even a bit of romance. There will definitely be areas that shock you that is for sure!

Oh… Holy… Wow…. This book left me speechless. The plot of this book is so fresh and new that I was completely shocked by it. I don’t want to reveal too much so I will just say this. Our main heroine arrives to a new town and learns that everything might not be quite like it seems. Did that intrigue you enough? I sure hope so because if not you are missing out.

Megan is such a wonderful female character. She is strong and independent, but she also has some soft areas as well. I think she is exactly what we need in our female characters, especially for some of our younger readers. She stands up for what she believes is right and tries to learn from her mistakes. I like this about her. The other characters in the story are written well too. They all have a unique personality and purpose in the book. I really like how the author is able to create these characters this way.

There is a bit of flirty attraction in this book. Megan has two males who enter her life as she begins this journey in the new town. Each male has his own attributes that make him appealing for our Megan. Each have scenes in the book which makes the readers question what is going on between them. With that being said, by the end, there is a clear solution to this. There is a slow burn throughout the story between Megan and one of the boys that will leave the reader feeling satisfied.
I have always loved this author’s writing style, but she never ceases to amaze me. This book is a whole different world than anything else she has ever written. This book has new characters that are so beautifully written. The plot is unique that I can honestly say I have not read anything like it. I cannot wait to learn more about this world. The pace of this book is written steady and I think that the revelation of new information is perfect for the story.

Overall, I am in love with this new world. How long do I have to wait for the next one? Too long I believe! I need it now! I think it is safe to say that I would recommend this book to others. If you love paranormal books with a lot of action and mystery and a bit of romance, then this book is for you. There is nothing too racy in this book. I cannot wait to get my hands on the next book.

Ratings:
Plot: 5/5
Characters: 5/5
Heat: 5/5
Writing Style: 5/5
Overall: 5/5

For those readers that loved the Judgement of Six series, you will not be disappointed with Melissa Haag's new series, Of Fates and Furies!!

I've been on the Melissa band wagon from the beginning. I've read everything she has written, and when I saw the blurb for this book, I knew I had to try it out. I was so pleasantly surprised by HOW MUCH I ended up loving it.

Plot wise, Melissa has always been a genius. This is no exception. While we don't get a HUGE idea of what the overarching plot will be, Fury Frayed sets the tone and the pace for the books that will follow. There are so many new creatures that I haven't seen in many novels as of late: Succubi and Griffins, then there are also the paranormal creatures that we all are very familiar with and love: Werewolves and mermaids and sirens. There is this beautiful blend of these mythical creatures that live all together trying to figure out how to live with the rest of humanity, and it's bloody hilarious.

If we are talking characters, then Melissa has outdone herself. Those that loved Bethi and Isabelle from Jo6 will find Megan quite the sarcastic and temperamental treat. She is a no BS, boss of a teenager, and you instantly fall in love with her. There is no maiden to be saved here people, Megan will save her damn self- and all of her friends while she is at it. She does not play the victim, because she's the hero. And along for the ride you have a shameless flirt of a werewolf, a overprotective griffin who brings loyalty to a whole new level, and a slightly insecure hugmaster of a succubus. The mash of these characters is so humorous, but also works really well together.

Overall, you wont be disappointed, I promise. If you were debating reading this novel, do it. If you weren't sure you can fall in love with characters again after the Judgement of Six series, you can. If you need a good laugh and fantastic writing to boot, look no further. This is going to be such an amazing series, I can't wait for all of you to fall in love with these characters like I have <3

(SIDE NOTE: If you dont buy this book for any other reason, there is a Clabby scene at the end that you DO NOT want to miss! It's to die for!)

Well, I finished it without much difficulty and with no skimming. It was okay and I'm relatively interested in what will happen next. I do have some criticism, though.

The problem I had with this book is that I felt as if the book has been passed through a muting filter, so that it wouldn't have more details, explanations or feelings than the bare minimum. An example: there's a conversation between Adira (or what's-her-name) and Megan, and it goes like this:
"[Adira's dialog]"
"[Megan replies]"
"[Adira replies, rather long]"
"[Megan replies]"
and so on a few times more.
Just that, no "Megan asked", "she said", they did not move, there was no hesitation or pause during that long-ass dialog, no signs of emotions etc. What's worse, they were not the only characters in the room - apparently they did not move or expressed any emotion either... I had to stop reading for a moment, and when I got back to it, I honestly became confused as to who's saying what, and actually had to go back two or three (Kindle) pages to get to the beginning of the conversation and figure it out.
I also felt there was a considerable simplification (or maybe I should say 'disregard'?) of certain things (emotions, behaviour, things MC doesn't pay attention to or question, or reacts to). Example: first meeting between Megan and Fenris. At one point:
[he says] "The way you smell, I doubt you'd be fine. It won't take long for every male within a mole to track you down. I'll walk. You girls can go home," he said looking at his dogs. "We're done running for the day."
The first one snarled and barked then pivoted and raced off into the trees. The other three followed her lead. This guy was crazy to have pet wolves.
"I think someday they're going to turn on you."

She completely disregarded the 'smell you' part, wasn't confused or weirded out, nor was she surprised that the supposed dogs/wolves understood him perfectly - nothing!

On a side note, at the end of the book (before the bonus content with characters from the author's previous books/series) there was a little info about some characters' full name, including Oanen's, which was neat, but all I could think about was - how do you even pronounce Oanen??
