Dear Summer

Rate this book
Parker Reeves has had a really bad year. Trouble at home, trouble at school… pretty much trouble in general. It took me a while to be able to sit down and write this review. This book has reached me deeply. And I find it hard to put into words the feelings it evoked. The story of Summer and Parker is beyond a love story. It’s an adventure. A journey. Along with the characters, I embarked on a search of meaning, purpose, goodness.
Also, I got to fall in love with the characters as they fell in love with each other. My heart swelled with love, laughter and grief. As I watched their adventure of finding themselves I found I piece of myself too. And isn’t this the best kind of story? The one that pulls at the heart strings, that captures our attention, enthralls our soul and takes us to a journey of self discovery. Santana wrote a beautiful book of self-discovery, of redemption, of grabbing life with both fists and seizing every small moment. This book helped me find a piece of myself that had been lost on the fabric of my soul. I won’t go on to give a summary of it. No. Read it. Savor it. Glean the jewels your very soul is searching for.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I have always been a reader. All my life. The girl at the library. The girl asking the librarians for new books. But lately? I’ve been in a rut. Everything sounds the same. And then comes along this book. THIS BOOK. Life. Changing.

Parker Reeves is just down on his luck. It’s just not his year. His mom has shipped him off to live his dad in a really small town. No friends. Nothing to do. Just a Summer with a father he barely knows. Every day is a struggle. He vows to make the next day count, but he can’t seem to be inspired to so do. Until he meets the girl next door, Summer. Sounds cliché right? This story is anything but. Summer is not your normal teenager. She is hiding something, but has decided to make the best of what life has thrown at her. And Parker is along for the ride.

“…and anything Summer touched seemed to radiate with light, love, and happiness.”

The connection between Parker and Summer was palpable. Their friendship was genuine and the development of their relationship was absolutely breathtaking. I refuse to place any spoilers in my review, but this is a definite must read. You LIVE through this book. Every encounter. Every lesson learned. And ultimately the fall. To fall in love with your best friend is a gift. Neither one took for granted.

“You’re going to do so much good, Parker Reeves. I can feel it in my bones.”
“You make me want to be one of the good ones.”

The writing. The writing. THE. WRITING. Seamless. Flawless. Intoxicating. Where has this author been hiding? I never wanted to put this book down. It flowed effortlessly. There was never a lull. I felt engaged from the very first page. I knew I was going to love this book by Chapter One. And by Chapter Two? I had already fallen in love with Parker and Summer. The execution was brilliant. The storyline unique and truly inspiring. The characters. They are everything that everyone should strive to be.

“You love me?”
“Without a doubt.”

Dear Summer was seriously one of the most exhilarating reads of my life. There are lessons in this story. Poignant and life changing, the magic of this book is deeply rooted in the magnificence of Parker and Summer. To live life without abandon. To love recklessly and whole heartedly. This book spoke to my soul in ways I can never portray in words. I cried. Oh boy did I cry. Because the intensity of them and their lives are so relevant to today. Overwhelmed with just the impact these characters have made on me. This book reminds me of why I love YA. It’s a story told in such honesty you feel it in your bones. If there is one book you read this year, make it this one.

UGH….. THIS WAS UTTERLY AMAZING!!!!!

4.25 -4.5 STARS

I don’t even know how this one ended up on my radar because looking at the cover and blurb, it’s so unassuming. The story is absolutely wonderful and the characters charming and quirky. This book is full of heart and love. The writing may be simple, but the story surely makes up for it.

Remembering the name of a book isn’t so easy when you’ve read hundreds and hundreds (and hundreds) over the years. But, the ones that totally surprise me with something so near epic are the ones that I’ll remember for a long time to come. Dear Summer is definitely one of those!

A definite must read for those who loved Love Always, Kate.

Have you ever finished a book and just clutched it to your chest? Hugged it so hard with tears running down your face? How do you let this story go? How do you move on? Santana Blair wrote the perfect YA BOOK. Dear Summer will touch you everywhere, so deeply that you will clutch it to your chest and cry when it’s over. You’ll cry for the characters, cry for your own innocence. You’ll miss your adolescence and reminisce of the good old days when there was nothing you couldn’t do with just one summer. She reminds that you that all it takes is one person to impact another’s life for the better, and in the end if we lose them, we gained so much more just from their presence. Dear Summer is filled with so much happiness and a blossoming, beautiful summer love. Parker is everything I would have wished for as a teenage girl. Summer made such an impact on Parker and me as well. She just makes you want to live. Keep living Parker, and be brave.... and now I’m crying again! If you love YA this is a Must Read. I could read this over and over and it would be an adventure every single time.

“Somewhere underneath their kiss he tasted the words of thanks on her tongue. He felt her self-confidence as she wrapped her arms around her waist and sighed into him.
Right in the middle of that kiss was Parker’s favorite place.”

How sweet can a book be?! Seriously ... sigh.

“Close your eyes”

He waited until she did before continuing. “Imagine you could go anywhere right now. Somewhere in you’d be happy to spend your days. Now tell me, where are you?”

“With you.”

Two simple words had never meant quite so much to him.

My heart just couldn’t take it! So sweet right?!?

READ THIS BEAUTIFUL BOOK, y’all!! Through all the sighs, smiles, and tears. It’s so worth it

"Pulling the door open, he was greeted with an image of himself. A Polaroid snapshot had been taped to the front door. A simple message has been scrawled in loopy cursive beneath the captured image of his shocked face. Take a picture it lasts longer ."

When starting this book I was not sure what to expect. I have enjoyed Santana Blair's 3 other books from her Paradise Cover series, and was excited to see what she had up her sleeve for this book. Once again she did not disappoint.

We are quickly introduced to Parker Reeves, a boy stuck in Concord, by his own choice, for the summer. From what we can tell, he is not enjoying himself, but calling his mother's bluff landed him at his father's house. The above blurb give a quick glimpse into the how the rest of his Summer will go with the "girl next door."

This story is a love story, that is only 1 part. There is a story of growth and maturity. Another of forgiving. Another of trust building. Another of you only have 1 life and live it to the fullest. All these are gently folded, the kneaded, and baked to perfection as you move thru perfectly written words. Once again she does not flood you with details that do not matter, but rather the details what build up her characters let allow you to KNOW them and understand them. Where you can feel what they feel.

This book was not like Santana's other books there was a different feel to it. I saw more emotion with this book. I stuck thru to the VERY end, reading past the last page of the story and then I knew why I was feeling what I was.

No spoilers for this book, it would not be fair to those looking for a great summer read during these winter months.

Can one summer, one person really change your life? Can it impact you in a way that you never ever saw coming and in the end mean everything? After reading Dear Summer and getting to fall in love with Parker and Summer I believe the only answer here is a resounding YES!! These two, Parker needed someone as much as Summer did and they fell into each other' slaps at the exact moment. Just, gah! I'm at a loss for words so give me a minute.

Two souls, two strangers who become best friends. Two of the sweetest people finding their footing in this big wide world. They do it together. They do it gracefully. They live and love. And they have fun. They were both lost, but after they found each other not so much. Because of each other Parker and Summer found what it truly means to love. I'm doing a horrible job of getting any point across really but let me tell you, you'll fall into these pages not wanting to quit reading. I felt like a high school kid again navigating this life right along side these two beautiful people. Two seventeen year olds who taught me more about life in a book then I've learned in 25 years living said life. I will cherish these two and this book. It's one heck of a ride and one sweet and amazing read! You'll keep Summer and Parker in your heart and always cherish them, I know I will! <3

This was such a sweet book and it gave me all the feels. Without giving away any spoilers, you kind of get an idea of what is probably going to happen in the book at some point but sweet baby Jesus I wasn't ready. I knew it was coming and still... I literally gasped out loud and had all the tears. But it's just so sweet and highly recommend it.

Santana Blair has given me a lot to think about with this book...good and hard. That's what a book should do, though, yes? Make us think--make us imagine and live and love with our characters.

Parker and Summer are everything that is good and right about YA today. They are sweet, a little mysterious in their own ways, and in the end, they are in love. The battles they go through don't dominate the entire novel which is refreshing because often, we obsess over pain and heartache and forget that there is a story. Not so in Dear Summer. We see pain, we see heartache--gah, do we see heartache--but we also see fun, and young love, and passion.

I give no spoilers, so you'll have to read to see what I mean. I will, however, leave you with my favorite quote from the novel. "Ride the Ferris wheel. Ride it and feel--And if the fear of falling gets to be too much, look up."

You wrecked me in the best and worst ways, Santana. I don't forgive you, but I do thank you for this story and these lives. xoxo

I don’t even know where to start. This book put me through the ringer but was so worth it.
I loved how Parker and Summer immediately had a connection. As soon as Summer was introduced I knew I was going to love her. The way she a little bossy but had a heart of gold.
Can we just talk about the fair right now?! I mean, how adorable was that. When Parker was on the Ferris wheel freaking out, and Summer tells him to look up to see the stars. I about burst, but it wasn’t over. The fireworks was probably my favorite part. How Parker watches the fireworks reflected in her eyes, and we finally get to see them kiss!!!
I knew that Summer was going to have some kind of problem from the beginning. When we finally find out what it was, I was already dreading what was going to happen. I expect her to get sick in New York and was surprised when she didn’t. Didn’t know what to do with myself when Parker saw her sprawled our on the floor. I was already bawling when the ambulance finally got there.
I want them to this amazing happily ever after and was crush when it didn’t work out. The funeral and the days following her death were the hardest to read. Parker was in so much pain and I couldn’t take it. I CRIED MY EYES OUT! I was satisfied with ending, although it didn’t end how I wanted it to. We get final words from Summer and Parker is finally ready to talk and remember the love of his life.

Simply amazing

Captures the reader and for those that have experienced a first love at a young age will relate to the characters and the strength behind their feelings for one another. But this is not just a story of teenage love, it gives so much more than that to the reader. This is told through the eyes of a teenage boy struggling with feelings of abandonment and inadequacy, following him through a summer while he struggles to find his place in his world. His path is intersected by a force of nature that is the girl next door. I will not give anything away but I plan to read this again. I am reminded by this book that life is precious and to take advantage of every moment bestowed upon me.
*And on that note it is time to give my kids their daily dose of mommy love and their reminder to have a good day.

“You’re my Charlotte, Summer. I wouldn’t have gotten through this summer with you. You’ve turned my life around, sweetheart. You saved me from my own self destruction” - Parker

It hasn’t been easy for Parker Reeves recently and things get worse when he has to spend the summer in Concord with his dad. Just when he thought his life couldn’t get any worse, Parker meets the girl next door, Summer.

This book ….. O-M-G!!! It’s exactly what my soul needed right now. Even though it’s a YA Romance, not my usual genre, it’s a book I’ll definitely be recommending.

I absolutely loved Summer. She’s smart, funny, witty, full of life and so brave. Summer is definitely a character who’s going to stay with me for a long time. Even though it was easy to figure out the ending, part of me was really hoping I was wrong. It’s such an easy, fun, loving, heartbreaking story.

After picking up the shattered pieces of my heart, I was ready to write this review. I always give books a high rating if they kept me engaged in the story, made me laugh or cry and impossible to put down. This book had all of those and one you need to read!

This book was recommended by one of my favorite authors, Colleen Hoover and I’m so glad that I took her advice. This is just one of those books that you will not regret picking up. I’m not going to lie, I dragged my feet reading this book. Not because it didn’t keep me wanting more, but because one: I’m in the middle of a military move and two: I had a feeling on how this book was going to end and I was afraid to get there.

Without ruining the storyline, It’s been a long time since I’ve ugly cried and this book did it for me. This book will make you smile, cry, and hug it at the end because your heart will be full from this young first love story. So do yourself a favor and make this one of your next reads.

Dear Summer is such a beautiful coming of age story! Parker is a teenager who trouble seems to follow. He eventually gets sent to live with his father for the summer in a very quiet Concord, CT. Thinking that he will be, dreadfully, counting down the days till summer is over until he meets the girl next door. She's different than anyone he's ever met and takes him on an adventure of a lifetime.

The writing is perfect and flows so easily. The author did an amazing job at capturing young romance and friendship. This story will tug at your heart, make you smile and possibly break your heart in two! Happy reading...or sad reading, either way good luck! 😂

After almost failing 11th grade, Parker’s mother is at a loss over what to do with him. She decides to send him to live with his father for the summer in the small town of Concord. Parker is mad at her for ditching him, at his dad for not being there while he was growing up, and is mad at his life in general. Nothing seems to be going his way until he meets Summer – the beautiful girl next door. Read the rest of the review on my blog: https://shouldireaditornot.wordpress....

Truest bucket list ever

This story brought tears to my eyes to the start. Although I knew what was about to happen, there was always hope that things would of turned out for Summer. Finding love can be the greatest gift for anyone. This story touched me with emotions. I hope to find love like theirs someday. I recommend this story to everyone.

Lots of feels

Reminder of first loves and also how one person can make such a difference. A little slow at first, but I couldn't put it down. Fair warning this will take you through a range of motions. Author did an amazing job bringing the reader into the story and making you feel all that they felt.

CUE THE TEARS.

This book was so full of emotion. I was happy, laughing, and then tears full fledged running down my face. I couldn’t put it down, now I want to know what happens next. What happens to Parker? Does he pursue those college dreams? Does he ever fall in love again? Does he stick around and take care of Kelly? Too many questions that I need answers to. 😩

While I enjoyed the essence of the story. I feel the writing style was too simplistic to really do it or the very likeable characters justice.
It felt very wooden in places and the surprise ending pushed me to give it 3 stars instead of 2.

Such a lovely book. The plot is not original But the story flows nicely. I fell in love with Summer and Parker. You can "feel" their feelings, their sadness...The author makes excellent use of the language. I kept reading through the night.

This book is very sweet. From the beginning the author lets you guess what the end will be.

I can’t find anything remarkable about the story, though. It’s entertaining, easy to read, cute… like many, many, many other YA novels.

If you enjoy PG rated, YA novels this is for you.
