Protecting him was just to supposed to be another job. Until it wasn't. Two years after surviving a brutal attack from members of his own unit, former Special Forces soldier Cruz de la Vega has found new purpose working for an underground vigilante group that offers justice when the law can't. When he's assigned to figure out who attacked a local gay rights activist, Cruz expects it to be just another job. But when it comes to protecting Elliot Wittier, he soon learns that the last thing he wants is for the intriguing young man to be just another job. At twenty-five years old, Elliot Wittier is well on his way to having the perfect life. As the head of a hugely successful investment firm and the founder of a prominent foundation, he should be on top of the world.
But looks can be deceiving and Elliot knows how to play the game. With the fear of failing the two most important people in his life always at the forefront of his mind, Elliot keeps an iron-grip on the control that has served him so well in the past. But when a violent attack leaves him vulnerable, Elliot's carefully constructed world starts to fracture. As he struggles to keep the threat under wraps, he's thrown off guard when a gorgeous stranger takes an interest in him at a Halloween themed benefit. Throwing caution to the wind, Elliot decides to allow himself the freedom that being with the enigmatic Cruz de la Vega brings for just one night.
But what happens when one night isn't enough? Or when the past catches up with the present? Can what two men found in each other in just twenty-four hours really last a lifetime?
***Although it features several characters from my other books and is part of the "Protectors" world, Protecting Elliot is a stand-alone novella that can serve as a great way to get a feel for the Protectors/Barretti/Finding universe I've created. In regards to the timeline of events, Protecting Elliot occurs after Book 9 in my Protectors series, but it is not necessary to read any other books to enjoy this novella. I've specifically written this book to give new readers a chance to meet my guys and for loyal fans to check in with old favorites while still meeting a new couple.***
4/27/20 Did a little re-read before I jumped into "Obsessed" which is about Cruz' brother and Elliot's dad ;)
Awesome and HOT little novella in the "Protectors" series.
I myself am not a huge fan of short stories, so I tend to skip them, but in this case, with this being one of my favorite series, I had to give it a go ;)
I still prefer the full novels, but this was Hot and Sweet and it will tie me over until the next book comes out....which should be real soon !!
3,5 stars from me.... Anxiously waiting for "Unexpected" !!!!
No, no, no! I don't want this to end!!! I WANT MORE!
And why, oh why did I wait so much to read this series? Now I really want to know Declan's story and read all these books like yesterday!
Matias and Sam NEED their own book too. I am SO curious about them! Sam was a shell of a man, still broken after his husband's death and Matias was so sad and his past still haunted him. Please someone tell me we get their story!
I really enjoyed the writing and the sex scenes were extremely HOT!!! 🔥🔥🔥
For a novella we got: action, suspense and scorching hot chemistry!!
I just wish this would have been more developed. When I saw how easily things fell into place in the end, I just wanted SO much more. But honestly, it was well written and quite a surprise.
*** This marvelous novella has all the elements we crave. This one has a touch of the three series, Finding, Barretti, and Protectors. I've read nearly all from the three series books, so I highly recommend this composite. Sweet Elliot, 25, has a problem, but can't figure it out. (as Ezio) He's been threatened and needs help. So, without letting him know, Cruz (as Aguilar) has been assigned to protect Elliot. For Cruz, 28, it's more than a job, since he had seen the picture.
They meet at a costume event for the Foundation, both are dressed as cast members of Assassin's Creed video games, Aguilar and Ezio. Elliot and Cruz have amazing chemistry and heat as soon as they meet.
This is well written with fabulous anticipation, a hot sexy connection and deep emotional bond which is formed in a flash. Cruz is still afraid he'll lose Elliot.
The danger escalates and we discover a twist. The action picks up and many are now in danger, not just Elliot. This novella is full of romance and mystery. Fantastic ! It can stand alone ! ENJOY ! ============
**3.5 stars** Another good addition to the Protectors series, pure “Sloane Kennedy’s style”, with smoking hotness, some angst, but quite “mild” and maybe the promise of a story for Sam and Matias ?!?
Elliot is receiving threats but wants to deal with it on his own due to his wariness of the police. However, Declan, the ex-police partner of Elliot’s Dad, is worried and asks for the help of the Protectors agency. Cruz is charged to find out what’s going on. Love at first sight : that’s how to describe Elliot and Cruz’s first encounter.
Insta-love in this one, but it’s Sloane Kennedy and she manages to make it good, with amazing chemistry and sexual tension and so, so hot.
It’s a short story, so of course, everything goes very fast and is wrapped in the span of a couple of days. With that in mind and the fact it’s a free book, I went with the flow and enjoyed it. A good way to wait for the release of a full length story of other members of the Protectors.
4.5 Stars!! Really L❤️VED it 💕. This was a fantastic addition to the already epic Protector series. I just felt that this could have been longer... 💞it left me wanting more.. more of Cruz and Elliot.. more of Sam and Matias 😍 Cruz has been assigned a very difficult task by his Protectors bosses; to protect Elliot without his knowledge. Elliot is outwardly a very confident successful businessman, but within himself he struggles constantly with expectations and burdens he feels he needs to shoulder to make his father proud. On top of that, he's trying to figure out a business problem which has led to recent threats on his life. When he meets Cruz (accidentally for him but actually orchestrated by Cruz); he's instantly drawn by Cruz's strength and power. Cruz feels the attraction as well and is unable to control how quickly he falls for his client . All his protective instincts surge as they spend more time together and he gets to see Elliot's latent vulnerability underneath a tough exterior. But an unknown danger lurks threatening their lives and the lives of their loved ones. Can Cruz protect Elliot and confess about his own "white lie" before it all comes out?😢 Will Elliot forgive Cruz for keeping such a secret? 💔And when can we get the story for Sam and Matias?😉💘 This was a well-written novella with many of the same ingredients that make a Sloane Kennedy classic 👌.. painful pasts😢, current angst😱, insta-lust/love💘, HOT sex🔥😍, little suspense during the climax😬,tearful union😭 and an epic HEA 💝..Everything was just faster and more efficient 😉. Highly recommended!!👍👍
Alright, it's no secret that Sloane Kennedy has a formula. Insta + sad backstories + hot sex + OTT drama/suspense/action
And sometimes (okay, for me, most of the time) this works and sometimes it doesn't. Where I think this REALLY doesn't work...is in a novella. This book speeds along like driving in the express lane with your foot heavy on the gas pedal and a cop on your tail.
I didn't have a chance to connect to anything. Just when I would start getting invested in what was going on...ZOOM...on to the next scene. Way too fast for me.
The book takes place over approximately 24 hours and I just couldn't buy into what was being sold here. Especially not the "I love you's" [insert dramatic eyeroll]
Note to self: Sloane Kennedy novellas are not for me
Loved it ❤️ another great addition to this series.... I just wish we got more time ! I know it’s a novella, so I knew what to expect but holy smokes the heat could have been off the charts for Cruz & Elliot. I must say I’m certainly looking forward to Sam & Matias - sheesh that’s going to be dark ! A really enjoyable afternoon read 😊
Nice short, but I wasn’t too happy with the angst you could see a mile away.
What I like about shorts is that there is almost no time for stupid relationship angst. But from the start you can just see where this is going since Cruz is hiding secrets from Elliot.
Cruz has been asked by Declan Barretti to watch Elliot, who has just been attacked. Elliot cannot know Cruz’s connection to Declan since Elliot hates Declan (this originates in the past, where Declan was partnered with Elliot’s father on the police force). So Cruz stages an accidental meeting, but didn’t count on the instant attraction the two share...
While I liked this, I thought the mystery was a bit underdeveloped and kind of added as an afterthought, while I could have done without the relationship angst.
Still, it was a real Sloane Kennedy story, so it satisfied my hurt/comfort needs.
May 2020 Did a re-read before I start Obsessed, to familiarise myself with Mataias and Sam again.
Protecting Elliot was a fun quick dirty read, instant love (which doesn't bother me) between Cruz and Elliot.
This novella introduced us to brothers Cruz and Matias and father and son Sam and Elliot, book thirteen in The Protectors series is about Matias and Sam which I am excited for next year.
I also loved catching up with some old friends Dom, Logan and Declan Barretti.
This story should definitely do as the author intended, and give new people a good taste of her successful series. If you are already a fan, you definitely won’t want to miss this one either. While this isn’t specifically about the Barretti crew, they are involved peripherally. Knowing the background will make it easier to know who’s who, the main guys here are new, and this is their story, so definitely a stand alone.
When Cruz is asked to protect Elliot, it doesn’t take long for him to feel the instant connection. Getting close to him takes on a new meaning after their first encounter. Elliot has been rather stressed out after he was attacked at his Foundation. He has three days to find some missing money from his father’s investment firm which Elliot now heads. When he meets Cruz at a gala event, the two hit it off with some amazing chemistry, and when Elliot realizes Cruz is able to give him exactly what he has always craved, he decides to let himself partake for the night.
These two end up being the perfect matches for each other. Elliot has been longing for someone to take control for quite some time. After having been told by a college boyfriend he is a freak for what he wants, he has had little luck in the sex department. But Cruz knows exactly what Elliot wants, how much he wants it and when to let up.
This is a fast-paced story, where the romance happens alongside the story at play. Getting to the bottom of the mystery, both from Elliot and from Cruz’ angles, as well as Cruz protecting Elliot, keeping to the job while his feelings are quickly growing, make this a very enjoyable segment to this series. It has the same feel and contains the same elements as the previous books, with some delicious little tidbits that make it just a little bit different than the rest. I continue to be a big fan of this series, and definitely recommend you start from the beginning and enjoy the ride. I can’t wait for the next installment!
This was essentially a condensed version of the style of the Protectors series but with instant connection and instant love. Minus a separation over some real or perceived problem. Declan was part of the story this time, using a piece of his past for the storyline. Elliott and Cruz were given fairly strong backgrounds, so the characterization was decent. It also seems to be setting up another story with Sam and Matias.
It was just a little too short for me, trying to fit too much into the shorter format. It felt a little choppy, like maybe a longer story was downsized. It wasn’t done badly, just didn’t give enough substance. There was a pretty high heat level for the length. (No pun intended.)
Great introduction to the Protectors and Baretti Security series' from Sloane Kennedy if you've not read any.
This short novella is a micro look at the work done by Ronan's team and how they fit with Vin and Dom's guys and its just as smoking hot as its longer brothers.
The big threat comes a bit from left field but it's difficult to set up a fully fleshed out background to the dangerous element which acts as the catalyst when you're using a short story narrative.
Elliot and Cruz work good together, it might be a bit instant attraction but they also talk and communicate well.
**3.5 Stars** Rounded up because Goodreads doesn’t have half stars 🙄
A great addiction, oops ADDITION, to The Protectors series. I am a huge fan of this series, and while this is definitely low on the angst scale, it was a great read.
Elliot was attacked at his foundation and Declan doesn’t believe the story he told the cops. Dom and Declan ask Cruz to watch Elliot, but due to past hurts he cannot know Cruz is protecting him. Here is the crux of the problem. He can only protect Elliot if he lies to him, but he really does like Elliot so it kills him to know that when Elliot finds out, he will not trust him again. It was a quick read so it did fall into the insta-love troupe and the forgiveness happened VERY quickly so no real gut punch there. Protecting Elliot is perfect if you are eager for more Protectors.
Also, Sam and Matias?!? Hopefully theirs is next (fingers crossed!)
I actually read this book. Truly, a real paper and ink book that I had to hold in my hands and actually turn the pages; it was awesome. I highly recommend it and this novella. If the author’s intention was to highlight her writing and, specifically, The Protectors series, she chose well. I loved both Elliot and Cruz …and Cruz’s brother was very intriguing and I cannot wait to see where that story line goes. Cruz has a story separate from Elliot, which had me wanting to keep reading to see how his brother would get his happy ending, too.
Honestly, if you are reading this review, then you are probably already a Sloane Kennedy, and The Protectors series, fan, but if not, pick up this book and give it a shot, you will not be disappointed. This book has everything we come to expect in this series, except the format is condensed and more fast paced, but no less exciting, sexy, and highly enjoyable. We have a mystery to solve, a budding romance, a little bit of family drama (on both sides), and a whole lotta fun. And as always, we get to meet up with a few of the originals in the series, and that is always high on my list.
Because of the length of the book, the angst factor is pretty low, but sometimes that is a good thing. We come to expect a certain amount of torment for our men, but having a fast paces novella gives us what we want without tearing out hearts, at the same time. It was nice to see some resolution for Elliott and his father, though. Read it, you’ll love it. Trust me.
Oh boy, what a delightful little morsel of hotness! I love the Protector's series so when I had a chance to grab this, I did. Then, I was sitting in a doc office, very bored, and realized I had this in my Kindle app. Joy! Doesn't take long to read, but this one packs a wallop. Very hot, great characters, believable story, and potentially sets up another pairing for a future book. What's not to like?

Whenever Sloane Kennedy releases one of her babies into the world, you can believe there will be action packed, bone shuddering romance. This author does nothing half stepping and her men just follow her lead. In this surprise novella, the reader gets to invade the Kennedy world, revisiting old and new friends. We get to meet Elliot, a young man who was looking not only to solve a mystery, but willing to open himself to a stranger fulfilling a need inside that was needed to be explored. We were introduced to Cruz, a man who needed grounding as much as he needed answers. These two were cosmic and radiating. But when a few truths hit home, would they let go of everything to be the key or would they be left in the dust? As always, five stars with enough heat to burn up my kindle pages.
I enjoyed this one. It's a real quick little bite, but despite the insta-love I enjoyed Elliot and Cruz a lot. I see why this is thrown out as a possible teaser for those curious about this series without diving into all the interconnected stories. The connection between Elliot and Cruz was palpable. The energy between them vibrated. I appreciated the balance of the suspense elements with the romance in a novella like this. Everything concluded a little abruptly, but also in a pretty believable manner.
Another insta-love novella from Sloane, and yet again not much in the way of a storyline to wrap around the sex [why do I keep buying these things I ask myself, shakes head]. 3 stars.
This was such a fantastic book and one I will definitely recommend to those who want an introduction to the Protectors series - despite the shorter length, you really get a feel for the characters and some serious sexiness and action to boot. I'm excited to learn more about some of the side characters that seemed to be getting set up for their own story!
From the beginning to the end the story line never waviered the pace of the story kept growing till the end. Most books leave you wanting more or hanging this book does not. The characters are real enough to have lived in some time period or someone you may have known. Highly recommend this book as a must read
