The earth was on the brink of a futuristic utopia when a new and deadly disease threatened to wipe out humanity. Telluria slowly dissolved its victims into one of the four primordial elements of water, fire, earth or wind.
Terra was a child when her parents caught Telluria. The corporation New Atlantis developed a cure and distributed it for free just in time, saving her parents and the world from extinction. The world was just beginning to rebuild when Terra caught Telluria herself. She planned to simply go get the cure, but when her best friend Grey is killed by New Atlantis officials for trying to warn her against it, Terra is on the run for her life and the truth.
This is one of the #SPFBO6 entries in my batchthis year, and it's one which sounded very promising from the blurb. This story is more of a dystopian than anything else, and in the vein of Ginger Games or Divergent, but in this world the 'big bad' is New Atlantis, the corporation who own the cure for Telluria.
We follow Terra, a normal girl until her best friend comes back from being 'cured' of Telluria by New Atlantis and is no longer himself. Something is different about Grey and Terra is worried at first, but she soon learns that Grey's cure could be a curse, and she has to run when she's discovered to have Telluria too.
Telluria is a virus that comes in a few forms. It infects the host with some sort of elemental problemand they eventually turn to that element, e.g. water/air/fire/earth. There is just one cure which is widely known, but there's also rumours of resistance groups fighting this cure. Terra needs to know more...
On the whole this reads quickly and is interesting as a concept, but it didn't feel like I truly got to know much about the world and characters. I think the pace is quick intentionally, but that maybe some of the depth is lost because of that.
One issue with this book, which was fairly irritating for me as I'm an Editor, was that there were a lot of typos/spelling issues e.g. 'breath' instead of 'breathe'; 'the' instead of 'they'; 'as' instead of 'has'; and 'then' instead of 'than' etc. I really think this book needs a thorough edit before it reads through nicely, which was a shame.
In general I think this works well if you want a fast-paced dystopia, but it's not got me emotionally invested. I think the ideas are fun and the book has certainly got appeal, but it's not as memorable as I would want and I'd have liked to dive deeper into the motives of the people, their pasts and the origins of the virus itself. 3*s which is 6/10 for #SPFBO
I loved this book for it’s different idea of a dystopian world and also the ideas associated with the world dying and the repercussions it has on humanity on earth.
The female main character is relatable and inspiring, showing flaws and insecurities but inevitably displaying unbeatable strength to an extremely adverse environment.
A unique read with a post apocalyptic concept. Terra is a young woman who's just trying to survive in New Atlantis with Telluria. Enjoyed very much, looking forward to future published books!
I absolutely loved this book and it's take on what would happen to the world if it finally decided to fight back against the destruction she's endured at the hands of modern society! Highly recommend this book and I'm super excited for the next installment ❤️❤️
I had both likes and dislikes in this book. The beginning seemed rushed, I think the series could do with a 0.5 or whatever you call it. There were some editing errors that really stood out to me. And I’m not sure how I felt about the repetition between Grey and Merlin. However I liked the concept it seems a touch familiar but I’m not sure from where. I really enjoyed the elemental factors in this though.
I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review via Voracious Readers Only.
This was an interesting twist to the usual element powers idea. That was oddly really fascinating.
The story about being worried when you got a catch of the disease, dying by turning into the element that chose to pursue you... interesting.
Terra’s journey of finding out more about it all was a pretty amazing. It was a page turner for sure. I always wanted to know what was going to happen next. I was so scared for her and nervous and upset and happy and frustrated.
