Within this whirlpool of delusion
Contrary to the conclusion created about me,
I will give you a new impression, finally.

"Finally.”

Because it is about time,
That reality is not confined
By the limitations of what one wants to see
Compared to the openness of how things should be.

The book starts with small poems divided into three parts; mind, body and soul. These poems describes the assumptions made by the society verses the reality of a hijabi women. With its simple but beautiful illustrations the book seized my interests to read it the moment I opened it.
The author have beautifully described the value of a muslim women, and that how societal perceptions on muslim women with hijab is far from the truth. Later, as the final chapter the author have shared her journey to hijab and the lessons and obstacles she came across while fulfilling this dream.
I rarely find any poetry books compelling, however the illustrations was what caught my eyes to start the book and what kept me going was her elegant words for description. A message for everyone who truly wants to know what it really means to be a Muslimah with hijab.

Thanks to one of my lovely sister for introducing me to this book which I have enjoyed thoroughly . It is a collection of short poems and an essay . I would say a very poetic expression of what Hijab means to the author, breaking some stereotypes through her power packed poetry. The images used in the book adds so much more to her words . The name of book is Unveiled , though it is all about the Islamic Veil -Hijab , I was wondering why she chose this name and smiled then thinking why not , the Author has unveiled her heart writing this book. The book is well divided into 3 sections ( Body , Mind and Soul) which gives an overview of Hijab inclusivity to all aspects of person’s life who is wearing it . I loved how the contrast is shown about Hijab as people conceive it as symbol of oppression while the person who wears it sees it as symbol of liberation from all peer pressures of conformity. There is also her Hijab story at end of the poems which reminds me so much of my Hijab story . Every time I read someone’s Hijab journey, I walk down the memory lane again . The book is simple, well written and heart touching. An inspiring book for all Hijabis and women in general. A small book but impactful !

Unveiled, a thought-provoking collection of poems, showcases the beauty of a hijabi’s open mind, her non-conformity to the modern-day fashionistas, and an insight into her enlightening soul. Djarabi Kitabs Publishing had sent me a digital copy for review purposes.

I love how the author, Rumki Chowdhury, likened a bird for every poem. A woman’s mind is likened to a raven, appearing to be caged yet wide and open as the sky in which the raven soars. Her body is likened to that of a peahen, seemingly unattractive, yet it is her whom the peacock tries to attract and impress. And her soul is likened to a dove, where there is freedom and hope within her.

The author ends the book with her hijab diary entry. She shares with the readers a sneak peek into her life and journey as a muhajjabah/hijabi, and of how she went from having a tightly-clad wardrobe to one that fits with the standards of a hijab.

Unveiled, a book to make the woman feel empowered.

I won this book as part of a Goodreads giveaway, and I have to say that I am so glad that I did. I wouldn’t have necessarily picked it up and bought it in a shop, as it isn’t what I would typically be interested in, but it was amazing.

The poetry, although written down, has a voice, you can hear Rumki yelling at you, or whispering, or getting exasperated or excited.

While not necessarily an eye opener, it is definitely a really good window into the world of a hijabi, and the struggles associated with deciding to wear the hijab, as well as addressing the fact that it is, ultimately, a choice.

I’d definitely recommend getting this, it’s massively quick to read because of the layout (I think it took me about half an hour) and definitely worth it.
