She's small. She's quiet. She's deadly. Lou survived the plague that killed her mother. As her father sheltered her from the evil that consumed the world, he taught her how to survive. After an ambush leaves her orphaned, the young, unassuming girl put her skills to the test. A wanderer every bit as brilliant as she is deadly, she forges a new path in the wilderness once known as Texas. But can she do it alone? LEGACY is a stand-alone novel within The Traveler Series world.
Louise is only 8 years old when the Scourge takes the lives of her mother and brother. Her father, David does his best to teach her how to survive in this new world. Lou’s smart, inquisitive, and determined. But, once her father is killed will she be able to put his teachings into action to stay alive?
Abrahams sixth novel in The Traveler Series, Legacy: A Post-Apocalyptic Survival Story is a departure from the main plotline and explores the origin story of Lou. This stand-alone book tells the tale of a young girl who must grow up way too fast in a world that has turned upside down. While the trappings of modern times are all around the lifestyle is more reminiscent of the Wild West. It’s a sad story when children see and do things that even adults shouldn’t have to.
This well written novel is evenly paced at the start then it takes off like a rolling tumbleweed. You can feel the love David has for Lou in everything he says and does. Lou is quick to catch on and is wise beyond her years. Sometimes her childlike innocence still shines through.
I really enjoyed Abrahams giving his fans an in depth look at Lou. She’s definitely a favorite.
This book was all about Lou. Battle didn't enter the scene until the last chapter. It was a good story, although parts of had already been told in earlier books.
Another stonking (forgive me, I’ve been watching a lot of Youtube lately of a British guy) intro line by Abrahams for Legacy: “She’s small. She’s quiet. She’s deadly.” I mean – don’t you want to read about Lou already? Lou might be one of the characters that I have an image in my head but I’d be really interested to see what or who Abrahams would compare her to (I might reach out and ask him since I’m that curious).
I rarely ever read books in a series back-to-back – usually because I’m caught up and the next book isn’t out. But I had the chance to read books 5 and 6 of the Traveler series back-to-back and I’m glad I did. Book 6, aka Legacy, is a standalone book in the Traveler Series. It tells the backstory of Lou. One that I could not wait to dive into.
From the other books, I knew that Lou was on her own and a master with her knives. I believe we met her in either book 4 or 3 and (not really spoiler alert) this book leads right up to the scene where Battle first meets Lou (and the same scene plays out in this book, too but from Lou’s perspective).
What I didn’t know was much of anything about Lou’s father and how she became to be a knife-master. Their story was really awesome and I found myself falling in love with this series all over again. Being able to learn about one of the most interesting young characters in a post-apocalyptic series was a dream for me and I think that Abrahams wrote this perfectly.
I couldn’t get over how young she was when this started and how quickly she realized that she was going to have to do things on her own. And try to learn every bit of knowledge her dad would share.
If you’ve read the other books in the Traveler Series – you’ll know a little about her backstory – but I thought it was interesting to hear them first hand. Lou shines as always and made this such a fun read.
Overall, I thought that Legacy might be one of the best books in the series and was definitely a story worth telling.
ALL eight novels are approximately a 70 hour listen - a post-apocalyptic world. A flea born pathogen, highly contagious, wipes out over two-thirds of the world population. There is no cure, but there is natural immunity. If you want the full experience, in sequence: Home, Canyon, Wall, Rising, Battle, Legacy, Hero, and finally Harbor.
Plot. Marcus Battle, a PTSD victim, returns to Texas and loses his son and wife to the plague; he speaks to them and hears them speak to him. Marcus also lives as a hermit on his land, defending it with shoot-first, so you don't need to ask questions. After months of solitude, Marcus rescues a woman being chased by a cult of marauders. The marauders have her son. They successfully burn Marcus's house down. Under a facade of revenge, Marcus and the woman set out to rescue her son and rid Texas of these thugs. The story has a considerable slice of flashbacks to Marcus' time in service - when he nearly dies to rescue his badly injured friend. Will Marcus conquer his own demons, rescue the boy of a stranger? Stay alive? Will he have a second family?
The story moves to Battle's father-daughter friendship with an orphaned, snarky, broken girl. Smart as they come, fiercely independent, able to sling a knife with lightning speed - Louise (Lou), is as damaged as Battle, having lost loved ones to the virulent infection and possies of opportunistic thugs. Lou and Battle's adventures traverse the years and the miles in search of a life without violence.
Liked. Good character development, easy to visualize action, well-organized plot over eight novels. No sex, no explicit language. Decent narration and production.
Not so hot. There are some holes in an apocalyptic world, in my opinion. Not much mention of shortages of essentials like gasoline, medicine, etc., all that would surely be horrific. No mention of tampons - hey, they will run out! Just sayin'. By the time the series ends, a span of 21 years since the plague, there is also a plethora of ammunition - who's making all this stuff? Lots and lots of double-tap gun violence. A bit slow tempo, but just pump the speed up a tad on your iPhone.
This is a long series, cliffhangers throughout - but, comes to a satisfactory conclusion with the final novel, Harbor.
Written by By Tom Abrahams, narrated by Kevin Pierce in unabridged audiobook format, released in March 2016-19 by Piton Press LLC.
Recommended - don't have to stretch the imagination much. This stuff could really happen, as we all now know with COVID19.
RLou's backstory is as amazing as Battle's. I minor interruption in the series, but the flow merges again.
Now we know the story about our literate, knife wielding, teen girl wearing a ballcap with a Houston Astros logo above the bill. Lou's education was taught by her father with the assistance of the libraries they dwelled in. Everything you need for a well rounded 'book learning'. Everything from Machiavelli to Sun Tzu, L.. Frank Baum to J.R.R. Tolkien, throw in a sprinkle of biographies and still thousands of literature from educational to recreational. The ideal life, but reality has a way of sneaking up on you and throwing curve balls to catch or duck.
In the post-Scourge world below the wall, life was difficult at best and deadly most of the rest of the time. But Lou could handle it because she had to. Limited choices.
Excellent characters and characterizations, coupled with a colorful and exciting plot combine to create an amazing book. The Traveler Series continues to entertain and enlighten its audience. I'm driving into the next story in the sequence now. Thank you, Tom Abrahams!
The young girl named Lou who she was and what made her to be the Young Lady of the Knives. She was a child around 8 when the scourge hit and took her mother and brother and then watch as their bodies are burned instead of buried. She came from a family who did not coddle the children but let them see the world as it was and hid nothing. She and her father roamed Texas to get to the wall and then back, she learn to fight the Cartel, the Settlers and many other people who was out to hurt her or her father and at the end she watched as her father was murdered. Then she became the revenging angel who killed the ones killed her father then burn his body as she had watched him do to her mother and brother. The story is a story of a little girl growing up in a violent world not knowing what life would bring or not, a world you did know who you could or could not trust, a world you must learn to fight to live and survive or die. The book is well written and the authors is able to connect book 5 and book 6 together by telling the reader or listener who the strange little girl was who tried to kill Battle and later learned to love, trust him and love him as an adopted and mentor father.
Lou, rather Louise, eight years old. Her Mother and brother dead. The scourge. Her and her father are immune. Hundreds of thousands are not. Their one of the lucky ones. That's debatable. Her world is in chaos. Survival of the fittest or most ruthless. Her father is teaching her how to survive in a world gone mad. And suddenly she's alone. This is an extraordinary tale of survival giving extreme insights into one of the primary characters into this series of books. A truly gritty tale of survival. Enjoyed immensely.
For some reason it has been a while since I read Traveler 5, but I remember that I liked Lou. This is her backstory and usually I'm not a fan of this much diversion in a story. However, since it had been a while and this was very well done, I was pleasantly surprised. The interaction between Lou and her father was very strong and, because we know the eventual outcome from book 5, it was also poignant. I do need to find a way to keep track of the various series that I read so one doesn't fall off of my radar.
One of Tom Abrahams's better stories. Reminds me of Torrent--in how the story follows a path readers expect while, at the same time, switching obstacles just enough to highlight Abraham's imagination. Small moments, such as Lou's reunion with the man from Marble Falls, distinguish this story. Abrahams is a fine writer--possibly too good for these genre tales--and this book is a little gem. I'd like to see Abrahams write something more offbeat and "literary" someday. Perhaps he already has. (I'm working my way through his catalog.) He's a fine writer.
I really enjoyed this book and it's a wonderful addition to The Traveler Book Series. It's the backstory of one of the central characters, Lou (short for Louise). While you learn much of Lou's history from reading the Traveler books, this goes into so much more detail, especially time spent with her father and how he prepared her to survive in a hostile world. Abrahams is one of my favorite writers of post-apocalyptic literature.
I really enjoyed the book. The young lady who is the central character really develops as she struggles to survive after society collapses. The learns as much as she can and she reads everything she can get her hands on. Plus, she has been taught a very important lethal skill by her father that will help her survive in a violent world. I recommend this book to anyone looking for a good adventure story.
Wasn’t sure exactly what I was expecting in this addition to the series. It was an interesting back story of how Lou grows up and becomes the young girl she is when she meets Marcus Battle. A nice addition and well worth the read if you have read the rest of the books in the series. Hoping that the author continues the main story line in a next book.
A heart-rending story of a young girl coping with many changes in her life as she grows up. Lou had to grow up very quickly, but luckily she had a great father to help her for a while. There were many challenges to face for a young girl. Tom Abrahams writing brings you to tears and laughter at times. You should read this story in the saga with Marcus Battle. I look forward to the next book. Happy reading!
This book is a page turning action packed story of Lou's adventure before finding Marcus. This gives you an idea of what it took for Lou to survive the hell of Texas after the apocalypse. Really gives you a feel for Lou and the life she endured that turned her into the survivor she is.
In Legacy, we learn all about Lou from the time her mother and brother died. All the struggles she and he dad went through and then when her dad gets killed all that she goes through on her own. It is really out of order but it was good to have a book that was basically all about Lou. This is truly a GREAT series. Now to book 7.
Well Tom never ceases to amaze me with his attention to detail and ability to make you feel like you are there with the characters. I love his work and can't wait for the next exciting book I'm sure he is working on. Keep up the amazing work Tom.
What an interesting story of Lou's back story. I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish. Her father was amazing which explains her grit and determination to survive. On to the next one. Happy ☺reading 📚!
Book six and this one concentrates on Lou from the start of the pandemic until she meets Battle (book four). Good book that tells the disturbing life of a young child forced to grow up in a destroyed world.
The story of Lou and her life after the scourge started up to when she met Battle is a good side trip that helps us understand why Lou acted as she did and her relationship with her father and Battle.
I have now completed Legacy (The Traveler #6) and the action continues along with outstanding Character development. This is a really great series and I highly recommend it.
Somehow I missed this in the Traveler series and learned Lou's story after the Harbor. It was good, no harm done to the story by reading it last but it is #6!
