Modern manga has evolved to encompass a wide range of genres target to specific audiences. I shouldn't have been surprised to find a main character, a 40 year old man falling in love with a much younger woman. This was a character closer to my current age, and a departure from the high school harem romantic comedies that I've been enjoying lately. It just feels good to have a story that's able to speak to you on a more personal level, and without the gratuitous fan service.
Kannou Sensei is a mature romance and paces well. It is beautifully illustrated in a throwback style that is appropriate for such a tale. It has subtle touch of magical realism that suspend the disbelief that one could fall in love with a fox spirit, yet grounded in reality to remind you how adulting can rob you of your sense of wonder.
This is a hidden gem, and I pray the mangaka has the health and resolve to bring this story to the end.
