Ever since she was a teenager, Regina Whitman has relied on her tough, independent spirit to survive and to protect the ones she loves. Even when heartache and disappointment strike, she finds the strength to press forward, rebuild her life, and do meaningful work.
But just when her outlook seems brightest, a tragic and shameful secret from the past catches up with her, jeopardizing her future and threatening the lives of the people around her.
In the face of overwhelming danger and darkness, can Regina learn to trust God and embrace the love she doesn’t think she deserves? Or will the painful guilt of her past destroy her?
Chloe S. Flanagan is an author, technical writer, blogger, and graduate of New York University. She enjoys exploring the Christian walk frankly and thoughtfully in her fiction and in her blog, The Candid Corinthian. When she’s not writing Chloe loves music, travel, reading books in all genres, and spending time with family.
What Lies Ahead by Chloe S Flanagan is a Christian contemporary suspense that focuses on the goodness and steadfastness of God. God is ever present. He longs to take our burdens and turn them into blessings but He cannot do that if we hold on tightly to our troubles. Our past is in the past but if we continually revisit it, we will never move forward into the future that God has planned for us. Revenge is not good for us. "You want to hurt him... to ease your pain... it won't work." Revenge weighs us down and will destroy us. There are themes of grace and forgiveness. We need to extend forgiveness because Jesus tells us to. We will feel better if we do. Grace is a free gift from God. "You can't accept it [grace] when your hands are full of burdens." We cannot earn grace no matter how good we are. We need to receive it and live forgiven. Life can be hard. We need to trust God to lead us at all times. "She would trust the journey in God's strength." When we have no strength left, we can trust His. There is a wonderful sisterly bond. Sisters who love each other and protect. God is the God of new beginnings. He can take our messed up lives and make something beautiful. What Lies Ahead is both a great story and has lessons from God for us to learn. I received this book for free. A favourable review was not required and all views expressed are my own.
Strong Christian values guide Chloe Flanagan’s “Forward to What Lies Ahead”—an insightful and poignant read about a young and independent woman trying to overcome the death of a loved one while striving to come to terms with a shameful secret from her past.
The author’s plotline deals with heavy topics, such as childhood sexual-abuse, jealousy, revenge, death, and survivor’s guilt, while her characters each maintain a progressive march toward love, spiritual growth, and redemption. Flanagan’s characters are easy to relate to—surrendering their innermost thoughts and emotions to the reader at just the right time, almost as if they are driven to the confessional—creating an atmosphere of intimacy and clarity of action between Flanagan’s cast and her reader.
Readers will have difficulty putting this well-written story down, even for the briefest moment, so I suggest taking “Forward to What Lies Ahead” along as a great accompaniment for a weekend getaway or summer beach-day read.
From the depths of grief to the pinnacle of love, from the burden of guilt to the joy of grace. Regina and Mac experience highs and lows and twists and turns but realize they are in the hands of a loving, forgiving God who pours out grace and mercy if they will only receive.
This story had a little bit of suspense and romance, but largely focused on Regina’s struggle to receive God’s grace as the free gift that it is. I liked the way that this author portrayed that struggle because it is a real one for many Christians. Full review at my website.
I received this book from the author. I was not required to give a positive review. All of the opinions I have expressed are my own.
I found this to be a truly inspirational story that I can highly recommend. It really tackles some very hard issues like guilt, grief, and forgiveness in an approachable way .The characters are well drawn and believable .I don't normally read Christian fiction but Ms.Flanagan has made me a believer in the genre. The book is faith filled but doesn't get preachy which can be an annoyance in a novel .I think it could be appreciated even if your not of the Christian faith since the topics it covers are universal and this is a story ( be it fictional ) shown from human perspective .Altogether it was a good cold afternoon reading experience ☕📖
Regina Whitman and her sister have overcome the unthinkable- abuse by their stepfather. They’ve triumphed over a horrific past, but that past is about to catch up with them, and the life they’ve built takes an ugly turn for the worst.
Regina had no intention of seeking the romantic " meant to be’s " that Abby embraced so enthusiastically. But she did her best to keep her own hang-ups from infecting Abby's dreams. So, in keeping with that resolution, Regina decided to suspend her misgivings for the time being and let Abby savor her exuberance.
Regina has relied on her own strength and fought her own battles, even if the consequences were detrimental to herself. She’s done everything in her power to protect her younger sister, but the arm of evil threatens the lives of everyone she loves.
“It wasn't any kind of corrosion, ma'am, it looks like the lines were broken deliberately.” She slammed the refrigerator door. “What?! You mean like they were vandalized? Are you sure?” “Yes ma’am…”
She can’t do it on her own anymore. But there is One who is willing to bear her burdens, forgive her past, and fight her battles for her if she will only recognize His Love and His Grace.
If grace was really forgiveness and freedom, then it was precious: much too precious to be bought with her efforts. It could only be a gift. Did it really only require her to reach out and accept it?
I’m giving this debut novel by Chloe S. Flanagan four stars. I read the whole things from start to finish last night. It’s not a very long book, it took me just over 2 hours to read it. It’s not a light-hearted or entertaining read, it’s a redemption story. A story of a woman struggling to overcome the nightmare of her youth and finding freedom and forgiveness in the ever-present Grace of God. The book opens with more telling than showing and jumps rapidly through several months to a year later. However, after you get through the first couple chapters, the book centers on a shorter time-period and increases in intensity as the author entrenches the reader in Regina’s struggle. As with every new author, (myself included), there are always things to learn and improve, but overall, a good debut novel.
Regina Whitman had to grow up quickly and make choices that should not be expected of anyone. But she kept her sister, Abigail, safe, and that was really all that mattered to her. Life is about to be even more challenging. Will she be able to find the grace to move #forward? Or will her past always play a part in her future?
I feel like that this book has been important message. To get over past hurts, time, prayer and godly counsel are all important. Faith was an important part of this book. In fact, #philippians313 was even quoted as a part of the text.
As you maybe guessed from the quick book description, there is abuse involved. Descriptions are minimal, but they could still have a triggering effect. The topic is handled without condemnation of the victim -only the abuser is at fault.
At first, I struggled to get into this book. The initial chapters felt like I was reading a report. But soon I changed my mind, and I'm really glad I stuck with it. I would definitely recommend it. This was my first @candid_corinthian book, and I'm sure I will read another one someday.
I found out about this book from the #avidreadersofchristianfiction Facebook page. When I searched #forward, this book was already a part of my #kindlelibrary The #inspiredbookchallenge has helped me to start reading books that I already own. Yet another thing that I appreciate about doing this particular Instagram challenge. This review was copied from @thesacredlinelit Instagram page.
This is a short novel, but packed with some serious questions for Christians regarding the protagonist’s struggle to receive God’s grace amid a romantic quest with an understated mystery/thriller aspect. I almost wish that this entire book had been in Regina’s POV instead of some of the head-hopping that occurred in the story. While the switching of POVs was mostly fine, at times it seemed unnecessary. I never really understood the need to slip into Mad’s POV two or three times. It made me anticipate more later. There was another POV (can’t reveal who without giving stuff away) that really shouldn’t have been there to ante up the thriller aspect of the story, which lagged as part of the multi-genre aspect of this novel.
The author gets some serious kudos for the early story plot twist, and the very clean writing style that could have so easily become preachy give the Christian message/genre leg of the story. Well done on those points. There were several “coincidences” that were on the edge of “yeah, right” but she had them set up or explained well enough. It was worth the purchase, and gets a solid 4 from me. I see a bright future for this budding novelist.
Just when Regina has life right where she wants it, the unthinkable happens. And, once more, she feels alone while picking up the pieces. If only she could escape the shadows of her past....and the man who is determined to make her pay. Regina's story is a great read, a mix of tragedy, restoration, and love. I was moved by her courage in the face of disaster and her humility in admitting her mistakes along the way. But this isn't just her story.....it's also Mac's story--a man who shares Regina's tragic loss. Though initially at odds with one another, they must choose how to move forward through every obstacle. Chloe did a great job with this story, and I'm looking forward to reading the sequel!
Regina has been her sister Abby’s protector ever since their father died when they were young. Being so used to being alone and in charge, her world became bleak when she realized how alone she actually was. Especially that she is still plagued by nightmares and hallucinations of her deceased stepfather… I don’t doubt that such dramatic stories are possible, and it’s encouraging to read people pulling through, realizing that God helps one throughout everything life throws along the way. When you read, don’t focus on what you might feel is exaggerated from the plot, but instead, be attentive to the peace and calm the characters experience once they start accepting God’s grace working in their lives. It’s truly inspiring to read how one can overcome the worst experiences and become stronger through it. Enjoy!
This book was so captivating that I didn’t put it down until the end! It was so realistic, with characters struggling with guilt & shame, feelings of inadequacy, mourning over loss, and finding forgiveness & freedom. I love this line: “None of this was about her faithfulness; it was about God’s.” And this line: “It’s easier to forgive when you know what it’s like to be forgiven.” The overlying theme of “forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead” resonated throughout the book. This is an amazing debut novel, and I can’t wait to read the next one!
Regina has controlled her world through work and rules for many years. A tragedy threatens to completely undo her controlled world and she has to come to fully rely on God. This was a well written romantic suspense novel that had me on the edge of my seat to see what would happen next! Some of the chapter transitions felt a bit abrupt, which is why this review is 4 instead of 5 stars, but I chalk that up to the fact that this is the author's debut novel and that she's an indie author. I look forward to more books by Ms. Flanagan! If you enjoy uplifting Christian romantic suspense, I'd recommend this one!
A suspenseful story with realistic characters and a lot of drama. As the story unfolds there's joyful expectations and then a tragedy that will cause much grief. This is a story revealing God's grace and I enjoyed it so much, I think others will enjoy it as well.
Highly recommend this book. I read it in one sitting. In this book you will meet Regina who is living with shame and guilt from her past from a tough situation she faced as a teenager. Even now as an adult, Regina is dealing with some tough situations and a very real fear. I found her very relatable. But what I loved most was that in this story you see Regina grow in his faith walk and learn to live in grace. So not only will the story keep you intrigued but you will see a real example of learning to bring our struggles to God and learning to live in grace.
This was a short story of overcoming and perseverance.
Regina has cared for and protected her sister, Abby, since their parents died. Mac is the bright spot in Abby’s life. He and Abby are seeking a Godly marriage. But things in Regina’s past come back to put them all in danger. Not to mention trouble at work.
This book shows the faith progression of each of the characters through difficulties and tragedy. Well written. I would recommend this to those who want a quick read but a meaty mystery with a satisfying ending.
A very compelling story. Regina had survived a traumatic experience and nearly raised her younger sister Abby. Mac was astranged from his wealthy father. Lot of complications and trying times. Thoroughly enjoyed the story. Gave it 5 stars.
Full of suspense, “What Lies Ahead” kept me on the edge of my seat and reading late into the night to finish! This book included an excellent Christian message of grace and forgiveness, a sweet love story and a delightful happy-ever-after ending.
After a rocky beginning in an attempt to establish a present day activity rather than flashbacks, the book slowed down and flowed well. The material is heavy from the struggles, suspense and a unique romance. That said, it developed into a deeply moving novel.
This is my first book by Ms. Flanagan and I wasn’t disappointed. As touted, it’s definitely a romantic suspense story. The “bad guy” peeps his head out occasionally, just enough to see him but not to be certain it’s him. That, and the main romance kept me turning the pages. I enjoyed how the author developed the main characters over time - she kept peeling back the layers, allowing you to see more and more of the real person. The villain is finally revealed, created an exciting wrap-up to the story. An awesome read!
I received a complimentary copy of this novel from the author in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
If there's one thing I'm always looking for in Christian fiction, it's authenticity. I'm not a fan of reading Christian novels that speak of perfect people doing perfect things, and I'm so happy to say that this was definitely not the case with Chloe S. Flanagan's debut novel, Forward To What Lies Ahead.
I went into this novel a little unsure of what exactly to expect, but I was completely blown away by the heart wrenching, beautifully written story contained within its pages. Just when I'd think that I had the plot figured out, another twist would come along that would keep me guessing, and then even if I had it figured out, it would still end in a way that I did not see coming in the slightest.
One of my favorite parts was the character of Regina herself. She's been dealt some pretty horrific circumstances, and its made her the type of person that closes people out, and never truly lets anyone see the real her. However, when her life starts to spiral out of control, a tenderhearted elderly neighbor helps her to see that she'll never be able to let go of the past and move on, until she's asked for God's help to do so. The journey her character goes on from start to finish was beautiful, heart breaking, and endearing, and I loved every moment of it. I also loved how she never played the victim, and was willing to admit that her choices had consequences, whether anyone else thought so or not.
The romance was truly wonderfully done, and a key point to the overall story. As not only did the romance keep the reader intrigued, but it showed the growth and strength that Regina's faith had gone through to get herself to the point of being able to trust her heart so completely once again.
This emotionally turbulent, faith based novel was a roller coaster ride from start to finish, and I found myself really loving it. I gave it four out of five stars, and it actually would have been a five star read for me if I hadn't had a few issues with the pacing of the novel. A pretty big plot point occurs in the first few chapters, and it seemed to me that it was jumped over pretty quickly, and this did happen a couple of other times throughout the story with smaller plot points as well. Overall though, I loved this beautiful story, and it's emphasis on God's healing hand, and his unwavering strength and stability. I highly recommend this one to anyone who's a fan of inspirational fiction, and I will definitely be looking forward to the amazing things to come from this author, if her debut novel is any indication.
Thanks so much to the author for providing me with a complimentary copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
I'm currently still in shock...like I need a day or two to process this book. I need more, but at the same time it was a perfect length. It was a very face paced story, which threw me a few times. (I read it in e-format, so that might have contributed to that) It switched perspectives multiple times throughout the book, that has never bugged me, so I was able to follow along pretty well. There were some serious plot twists throughout and boy oh boy were they written wonderfully. This book brought tears to my eyes, but the story of redemption and grace were so beautiful.
I feel like this book would make a great movie, not gonna lie. They might not be able to capture it as well as Chloe did, but it would definitely be worth watching.
I give this book a 4.5/5 stars. I really really enjoyed it, and cannot wait to read more by this author. I would recommend this book.
*I was sent this book by the author for an honest review* *All opinions are my own*
I loved this one! I was immediately drawn in by the relationship between the sisters Regina and Abby. I thought the beginning was very energetic, with most of the energy coming from Abby, the younger sister. Overall, I like the way the story unfolded, and I enjoyed journey Regina took, going from a person trying to work her way into God's good graces to learning to trust and accept His grace. This book was filled with relatable characters that I truly liked. Like I would like to be friends with these people. This book also contains one of the cutest moments I have read in a long time. It is a great story. I highly recommend it. :)
I just finished reading the book! I was captivated by the way in which the author is able to bring life to her characters in the story! Revolving around the life of young Regina, the author does an excellent job in bringing the strands of romance, pathos and suspense to life in these pages! Looking forward to the author's subsequent publications!
I was looking for a romantic suspense to read and grabbed this one. I’ve haven’t read a Flanagan book for a bit. I’m alway surprised at how much time her books cover, but I also feel like it’s really realistic. Like, life happens in between moments and things progress along life. It’s totally something different from other books I’ve read. Like, in the thousands, I don’t know if I’ve run across it like this. Very distinctive feel. This was an enjoyable read with a lot of good lessons on grace. So different than the beginning makes you envision it’ll go. ;)
