This series is really wonderful, and totally addictive. If you’ve not read it before then the box set is ideal. Not only because it’s price (99¢ at initial sale) is a steal vs the cost to purchase the three books separately ($11) bit also because you won’t need to wait between reading each book. Trust me that latter point is even more important than the savings as these books are so addictive that I was going into withdrawal between volumes waiting for each sequel to be published.
Highly recommended as a boxset. Here are my book-by-book reviews:
Flightless Bird (The Caged Series Book 1)
This is a powerful first book in what I strongly suspect is going to be a new addiction for me. Lexus, Phoenix, and Griffin Are all wonderfully drawn characters, and the emotional pain described by the author is palpable. That these three come together and work together to heal and protect is winderful. Frankly this book would be wonderful without any paranormal elements. Kellie McAllen is that good. That the paranormal aspect is there, and is well done, is all the more sweet. Yup, definitely addictive. And definitely recommended.
PS: There's a teaser chapter at the end. Some might want to wait and not read it until ready to read the next book. Not a problem for me as I'm rushing into the next book (that whole "addictive thing" at work), but fair warning to others.
Growing Wings (The Caged Series Book 2)
I rushed right into this book after finishing Flightless Bird. I'm happy I did. Lexus, Griffin, and Phoenix are wonderful characters and it's fun to watch them mature and develop themselves, and really learn what it means to be s powerful Catalyst and Conduits (which are pretty neat and original paranormal powers, by the way). The gang had now left Lexus's crappy home, and her poor excuse of a mom with creepy boyfriend, to go to the Magna Virtus Academy. It's an elite school full of kids with paranormal abilities like theirs. Yes, teen angst will pursue, even above what's already there due to the whole live triangle things. Ouch. It's all wonderfully done, however, which makes this book thoroughly enjoyable.
I highly recommend this book, with three caveats. First, for maximum enjoyment you really should read book 1 before this one. Second is that Kellie McAllen clearly likes to add a teaser chapter at the end of her books. I was alert for this after book 1 and stopped just before that last chapter. My stopping point was a perfectly excellent "Happily Enough For Now" rather than a HEA, but that is all you can expect in a true series. Finally, be warned: this series is addictive stuff. Even avoiding that teaser chapter at the end I'm still pining for the next book. I'm gonna just hate waiting.
Taking Flight (The Caged Series Book 3)
Another strong chapter in Kellie McAllen's The Caged series, it's a real pleasure following along Lexus, Griffin and Phoenix as they develop in terms of maturity, understanding and power. The context may be different but the same sort of path in followed, with well-crafted new characters and some returning characters have important roles (hello, Jaxson). I'm not going to summarize the (truly excellent) plot as I don't want to accidentally spoil anything. Having said that, this isn't really the book for newcomers to the series (they really should start with book 1, which is excellent) and, as for others, the kindle blurb does a good job in describing this book and I can pretty much guarantee that if you liked the prior books you'll love this one.
Highly recommended.
