A new Roman governor arrives, imposing his brand of governance, Publius Ostorius Scapula, knocks Lauren about and brutally flogs Alyssa. They are forced to vacate the fort, creating a village in the southern forest. From there a patrol goes to warn Hod Hill and Mai-Dun castle. After leaving Hod Hill, all but Lauren are taken captive during a fight with a Roman cohort. She is alone and not equipped to deal with her situation, so offers a prayer to Madeil for guidance. She mysteriously appears with Brevit and Teal, rescuing the patrol. Sheelan’s love for Lauren is recognised by the Alyssa, who becomes her personal bodyguard. They meet Chief Caractacus, joining forces to ambush and annihilate two cohorts of the Ninth Legio Hispana. While Lauren and Sheelan are out hunting, they discover the camp has been betrayed and all captured again. Lauren, Alyssa, Selene and Alegia combine their powers to avoid being shipped to Rome. Eventually, they make Mai-Dun Castle, to find it destroyed, dead littering the ground. Vespasian is returning, so they make for the fort again, enjoying a period of peace and meeting Queen Cartimandua. They become a Client-Queendom to Rome. But Vespasian is recalled. The new Legate, Quintus Veranius, is as bad a Scapula, having Alyssa, Lauren and Sheelan publicly flogged while hanging from frames in the village centre, then imprisoned in the cell to rot. With Toler’s and two Roman soldier’s help they get away to become outlaws. They meet and defeat Veranius’s force in an ambush. What will his response be?
