This is the final book of "The Master Thief" trilogy that has followed the exploits of Jack Myst prior to the events of "The Chronicles of Lumineia". In this, Jack has been chaffing under the constraints of being the newly-installed head of the thieves' guild. However, the threat of Skorn still hangs over him.
These books have been very entertaining, but, to be honest, I found them the most forgettable of all of Ben's books. I think I just never really connected to Jack the way others did whereas my affinity for Tryton keeps his trilogy more firmly in my head. That's, of course, not to say this hasn't been a good series. That's just personal preference. The characters in these books have been great as always and it has been interesting reading about the group dynamics as they, at times, form an Ocean's Eleven-esque group of thieves.
What has been most interesting in this series has been the move away from the regular antagonist of Ben's books. All the other series have had Drakken and his hordes as the ultimate bad against which the protagonists have been fighting. In this, however, Skorn doesn't seem to have much, if any, connection to Drakken. Rather, Skorn and his counterpart Ero are revered as gods and seem to be part of a race of beings that transcended the world of Lumineia as we've come to know it. I suspect this is introducing us to the next series that Ben is working on.
Finally, Jack is definitely in the mold of previous Hale protagonists that are supremely skilled and powerful and who rarely make mistakes. I could imagine a reader being put off by how untouchable they seem to be, but I have always enjoyed Ben's characters exercising their abilities without going through too much effort to humble them.
A good read, as always. I remain a faithful reader of Ben's work and look forward to the new series.
