I got about five pages in and bailed. Between the group of survivors in a warehouse? or trying to get into the warehouse and what seems like the four person remnants of an infantry platoon trying to get into or out of the same, I was lost.
That's some bad writing. The lieutenant only commands three survivors out of around forty men, that's not a good sign. Yet after six months? of losing combat against the aliens, he insists on renaming a woman asking for help. He insists that her new name is Annie Oakley and she's now to be called Oakley. I guess that's because every elite loser in every military videogame has a nickname or maybe because every tough macho soldier only responds to his nickname.
The dialogue includes an "Aw shucks, ma'am." and his mamaw would be whipping him with a switch if she were alive for his lack of manners. He then tells the woman Steph that despite that, she's now to be called Oakley. He also commits to attacking bandits because taking other people's stuff is un-american?
Native Americans, black slaves and the original Hispanic landowners from Texas to California (who were promptly dispossessed by law after the Americans "freed" them from Mexico) might not understand that character's statement.
From faux military talk through good ole boy misogyny and "ain't we just grand folks" in six pages overwhelmed me. This was book two and I'm grateful that I came to the series in the second book. The writer might have tried a little harder in the first book and it might have taken more pages for me to bail from horrible writing from a horrible little man.
Now he has a Blaster. Lt. William "Don't call me The Kid" Bonney put together a band of bushwhacking soldiers with one mission. Kill Licks. The aliens invaded earth three years ago, and humans were losing. Bad.

+ Interesting characters, I like the mystery that surrounds some of them, not knowing which side they are really on. It's good that they are having to fight back with limited resources, which is something aliens would likely cause if we're ever invaded. It held my attention really well, being quite fast paced and with plenty of action as well as interaction between characters. The end is a segue to the next book, but it's not as annoying as it could be as the next book is out very soon, I'm looking forward to reading it. - Needs editing. It does distract after a while but not enough to spoil the book.
The tension and excitement continue to build throughout this second installment of the series Invasion Earth! I love reading about LT and his crew. They are constantly in a whirlwind of a mess but LT always has a plan. I can hardly wait to read book 3 to see how he sorts this one. I highly recommend it.
Love these little fast paced short stories. Doesn’t mire you down in details always giving you just enough yet leaving you wanting more. The Lt.’s sarcastic banter with his men and others just cracks me up. I’m so in the mood for this kind of reading experience right now so it works for me!
