She has studied under a host of award winning authors, including Valerie Wilson Wesley, Chris Abani, and Bernice McFadden. On June 13, 2013, Eartha Watts-Hicks received the Just R.E.A.D. 'literary game changers' Award from the NYCHA branch of the NAACP and was named their literacy ambassador for 2013.
