Hello! I'm the author of the Witch Way to Mintwood series and the Spooky Business series! I live in New England and love it. I survive the winter by layering, good-natured complaining, and more layering. In case you were wondering. Hearing from readers is always lovely, so come visit me here:
Not a bad story though I didn't feel like I got to know any of the characters enough. It does have plenty of supernatural goings on and a strange mystery. I did spend the entire book wondering exactly what a le-haunt is if it isn't a ghost, something which distracted me every time I saw it. A note at the beginning to explain what it is would have been ideal.
This book had an interesting premise, however it was not well executed. It contained many irrelevant and uninteresting scenes that bogged the plot down. Also, much of the humor was more of what I'd expect to find in a book written for 10-12 year old's, which this book clearly was not.
I didn't hate this book, but I did find it hard to enjoy. The wiring isn't the best and there were some plot holes. Overall, a cute mystery, but I found it lacking important details, and over detailed on unimportant points. I'm not sure I'll read another one. I did love Cookie though! She was a hoot!
Witchcraft abounds at the Haunted Bluff Mansion. This is located in Shimmerfield, Maine which is a coastal village. You will come face to face with ghosts, le-haunts, vampires, skeletons, witches and warlocks. Jane Garbo has returned home to her home at the Haunted Bluff Mansion to find the house in disarray. The SpookyBooSpectaclar is to take place soon. The public comes into the Haunted Buff Mansion for a spooky tour provided by the witches, ghost, skeletons, le-haunts and vampires. But this year ghosts are disappearing and skeletons have been crushed. An original, spooky, unusual paranormal with a feisty, quirky, artfully created characters trying to solve the mysterious occurrences in the Haunted Bluff Mansion.
Families can be complicated. Some are dysfunctional. Some are filled with over caring warmth. Some are a mixture of both, as is the case with Jane Garbo's family. Having tried to live on her own in the City, Jane is returning home with her bags in tow. The family has made changes but they are happy to see Jane, even if it isn't obvious.
The family is super happy to see her right now as the family is getting reading for their business seasonal opening.
Now, I'm not going to say much more and although other reviewers most likely have given hints as to this Garbo business, the scene written will grab you quicker and pull you into the book.
This is a mystery book. There are deaths, and disappearances. Jane and her family join together to solve the mysteries. It is a Spooky Business filled with humor and unusual scenes. The dialog will have you smiling. Enjoy!
An i interesting first for the series. Not sure where it will go from here, but this was a fun read involving a Haunted House business that makes use of an actual haunted house! Lots to go wrong there!
The story was cute enough for me to want to finish the book. However, the lack of editing drove me crazy. There were many spelling errors, missing or inserted words that clearly hadn’t been deleted, and wrong words that sound like the word that fit there but had totally different meanings. All these kept pulling me out of the story. It would have been at least 4 stars if there had been good proof reading and the resultant editing.
This was a quick read, which I appreciated, but I was thrown by the syntax and composition. Lots of repetition in word choice, loose ends on character development that the main character noticed but we never delved into, inconsistency in the story line (especially in the final scenes and climax of the story), and random growth—by leaps and bounds—of the relationship between Jane and her “crush” who just happens to be the most powerful warlock around and has maybe two relatively impersonal conversations with the main character. I was disappointed in the execution overall. There were some bogged-down moments in the descriptions of things and irrelevant scenes, which makes me think the editor perhaps didn’t have the teeth to deal with making cuts and suggesting changes. The story itself was cute, but it could have been longer and developed the family more before everything hit the fan and I would have enjoyed it just as much. I’ll go ahead and read the next book just to see if there’s any improvement.

I love cozy mysteries and this was a cute, spooky one! This is the lowest rated book of the series so I'm excited to dive into the next one to see how it's improved!
I have 2 issues with this book.
1) I have no idea what a le-haunt is. It's something made up for this story because I googled it and came up empty. It's not a ghost, vampire, skeleton, witch, werewolf...nothing. Sooooo what 👏 is 👏 it? 👏 It would have been nice to have an explanation. I took off a whole star for it because it bothered me every single time it came up.
2) I felt like I didn't really get to know the characters. Maybe, HOPEFULLY that's something that will happen over the span of the series or in the next book.
This book follows a family of witches who run a haunted house with real live creatures. Civilians don't know that and they think it's all costume and just as close to the real thing as possible. The mystery is who is crushing skeletons to dust and they have to solve it quick before it gets worse. It was a fun ride for sure even though a little predictable.
Dysfunctional families?? I have have two competing for first place. I don't need to read about another. I dropped the story on chapter nine picked it back up at charter twenty one finished the story and didn't miss anything i.Portland in between. Sorry hon. It was boring in between.
It's a delightful paranormal cozy mystery in spite of all the spooks involved. Author Addison Creek has done a wonderful job with this book. I found it a perfect combination of spook, fun, thrill, suspense, adventure and humor.
Jane Garbo, a witch living in New York, has lost another job and she's forced to go back home at Shimmerfield, Maine. She's living in Haunted Bluff Mansion, where most of the supernaturals like ghosts, vampires, and skeletons live besides the family of witches headed by the crazy, eccentric, Cookie, Jane's mischievous grandma, well known for her witty, sarcastic comments. Jane is delighted to find her favorite cousins, Pep and Lark, the daughters of her Aunt Meg, Cam is her younger brother and Corey and Kip Woodson are their family friends. She is livid to find out that her bedroom is now occupied by her least favorite cousin, Lizzie. Lizzie, Cam, Kip and Corey are haunt hunters who capture ghosts and skeletons and trap them inside the mansion. Their uncle Taft is an interesting character pretending to defend the family from the attack by a deadly group.
Jane is unaware of the problem faced by her family. The Skeleton Trio, mischief mongering skeletons have been completely crushed to their deaths and the resident ghosts have started disappearing mysteriously . Jane is furious to know that her mom and the rest of her family have been keeping this as a secret from her. She's determined to get to the bottom of this complicated case but a handsome officer, Grant Hastings with the Supernatural Protection Force, comes to stay with them to investigate what's going on in the house. The case takes a deadlier turn when Jane and her cousins face the risk of getting killed by a crazy maniac. Who's behind these attacks in the Haunted Bluff Mansion ? Can Jane solve the case before Grant does?
The book is full of unexpected surprises, twists and turns that add thrill to the book. I loved the concept of speaking skeletons also being a part of the Garbo family. It's amazing and entertaining. Do read it if you are looking for a refreshing paranormal cozy mystery.
What a hoot of a read! So, let's say you are from a large family of powerful witches living in a spooky old mansion that's a longtime, successful haunted house business, for starters. Now, imagine that that unbeknownst to the local human community, your family business is in actuality populated, so to speak, with actual ghosts, skeletons, vampires, bats and whatever else you need for a terrific haunted house experience? What about that?
Well, that's definitely some "Spooky Business!" There is a wonderful assortment of oddball cousins and siblings in this multigenerational household, who are sometimes at each other's throats, metaphorically speaking, and the males get to go wrangle more ghosts and skeletons for the business. The females get to keep the household running and operate the actual business end of things, including the gift shop. There is grumbling about these outmoded gender roles, that's for sure! And nobody ever cleans the haunted house areas of the house or ever goes Down Below--into the basement where there is some kind of supernatural criminal operation going on. And then there is Jane, who went away to college and now just can't keep a job. She finally gets fired--again--and gets a message on her old answering machine from her Mother telling her to come home, because she is needed. Well, you'd better read this book, because there is trouble brewing and it's going to be a wild ride! This is a most original reading experience! I loved this book! It is totally off the wall nuts, in a very entertaining and intriguing way! You can't imagine what's going to happen next and I can't wait to find out more!
Jane tried to escape her mad family and live a normal life in New York, but after getting fired from yet another job, she has no choice but to return home. Unfortunately for Jane, home is Haunted Bluff Mansion, a famous haunted house and tourist attraction. What the tourists don't know is that the ghosts, skeletons, and vampires are all too real.
When Jane arrives home, the household is in an uproar. Not only is everyone preparing for their grand opening of the season, but someone (or something) has smashed the Skeleton Trio, utterly destroying them. Now all of the supernaturals are fearful for their undead lives. Making matters worse, a warlock has been sent to assist with the investigation. In a female-dominated household, most of them were all a'twitter over the handsome Grant, especially Jane's obnoxious cousin, Lizzie. Jane, however, resents Grant's presence. She also resents that she and two of her other cousins are not allowed to hunt haunts and are relegated to holding down the fort, so to speak. Jane, Lark, and Pep launch their own subtle investigation, digging up clues that escaped the supposedly more seasoned members of the family.
The storyline was interesting, but the narrative bogged down at times. Some things were never fully explained, such as what a le-haunt is, why Uncle Taft kept disappearing, how a household of witches lost control of their own basement, and what became of Jane's father and other uncles. There were some minor SPaG issues, and characters weren't fully realized.
Spooky Business (Jane Garbo Mysteries Book 1) was written by Addison Creek. Jane Garbo is a "witch" who left her family manor in the town of Shimmerfield, Maine to make it big in NYC. However, when she is fired multiple times for seemly insignificant reasons, she is stuck returning home. But things are not as she left them, her room was given away to a cousin that she does not like. And on top of that there are other odd things going on at the manor. Overall, the premise for this novel was interesting. The world building was a bit slow, and it left me wondering about the properties of some of the supernaturals. Too much time was spent on the petty family relationships that are mentioned multiple times. Jane's family also consists of three generations of witches. The elder witch has the most power, then the middle generation does not feel the need to teach the younger generation enough about their powers to protect themselves. There is also some odd back story about what happened to most of the males from the middle generation that was a bit fuzzy. That said, I have read the other books in the series and these details do develop better over time. Each book also gets better, too.
The story plot was good and creative and flowed fairly well. However the overall writing was scattered. Sentences ran on and definitely need editing. There are times where sentences had to be re-read to figure out what is being said instead of the words taking the reader through the story. The introduction of the family structure was so scattered that it took halfway through the book to figure out the relationships. Character development and interactions were minimal and too many dramatic adjectives where thrown in. Not sure what a "le haunt" was as they weren't defined or differentiated from ghosts. I wanted to like this and enjoy the discovery of the next books, however this will sadly be a pass due to the poor writing skills. These books may have a better audience with the pre-teen group.
Jane has been living in the city and losing jobs left and right. She moves back home to the Haunted Bluff Mansion which is getting ready for the Spooky Boo Spectacular.
A haunted house. With real ghosts, skeletons and vampires. Fortunately, Jane is a witch. Unfortunately she doesn't exactly get along with her mother. Her grandmother is rather nasty.
Also unfortunately something has been attacking the ghosts and skeletons. Down Below might be able to help since they are a criminal group of supernatural beings and have contacts of there own. Then there's Grant from the Supernatural Protection force who may be able to help.
And how about The Majesty of Magic?
Or the floating clock?
It all makes for very different type of story in this genre and it's pretty good.
After being fired from yet another job in New York our reluctant heroine moves back to the family business in Maine, sounds pretty normal yes? One tiny problem, the family business is a haunted house and unfortunate it's for real, ghosts and vampires with talking animated skeletons for good measure, add to the mix her crazy relatives and you have a recipe for disaster. It also doesn't help that all the renegade spooks have formed a criminal gang and the live in the extensive callers, so when a ghoulish cult tries to take over the house all hell breaks loose. Well written with great characters lots of humour snark and even a little romance just for good measure. Well worth a read, Baz
I have a confession, I am reading this series for a challenge (I need to read two books with Spooky in the title). I don't know if I would have picked this book up, if I hadn't a need to. I am now reading the second book: Spooky Spells, and I am liking it. The author kept all the good things about the first one, and really improved on it.
I would call it cozy, because the characters and setting are more important than the mystery.
What I like about the series so far: Great premise, a haunted mansion with authentic supernatural beings; quirky characters and a bit of romance.
If you don't like larger than life spooky storeys of mystery full of intreage and humor as well as a ghost or two hundred, ghouls, skeletons, evel avenging vampires and a haunted house full of witches this mystery isn't for you but if you enjoy your cozey mystery with stellar caracters and more than one mystery after another with fright and laughter and misfits you have definitely come to realize that perfect read is here in "Spooky Business "Jane Garbo is waiting to tickle your sense of things witchy cozey mystery stile with cooky cookie helping along not. 😉😮🤔😖👻💀😱 Kat
Good story. The pacing was nice. I did feel like there was too many characters, however, and we didn't get to know most of them enough. Even those that were secondary were not all built up enough. Also, what is a le-haunt? They keep being mentionned but what are they?
I definitely am interested in reading book 2 because I wanna see if there will be character build-up and I am interested in following what's going to happen between Jane and Grant. I also hope the next mystery will have more hints or be better explained as I felt it kinda out of the blue in this one. Good start to a series though.
A new series that I still can't make up my mind whether I loved it or hated it. The story seemed to be going nowhere for sometime and then picked up the slack. Will probably have to read the next one to have a better idea. A witch that has tried to live a normal life returns home after another job sets her loose. A haunted house, a family of witches and a threat to them all. Can she (even though she hasn't used magic for a while) make a difference and nullify the threat?
Well, it was definitely spooky business. Witches, warlocks, vampires, skeletons, ghosts and le-haunts (I must have missed their description because I don't have a clue about their identity), all these are thrown in for good measure. The story is as much about the Garbo family as it is about Jane. It is entertaining, quite a few laughs along the way, and easy to read. The characters provide their own degree of entertainment and humor, Cookie is a hoot. The time passes quickly and easily when reading this book.
This is a story that's a little different from most paranormal mysteries, and not quite up my alley. It was a little slow building up but ends with a bang so I can't complain. The haunted house setting was a great idea and sets it apart from the usual fare. The "murder" mystery is interesting too in that it isn't your usual victim, and the perpetrator is a real surprise. The book gets kudos for its different angle.
Definitely different paranormal mystery. Jane is forced to return home to work in the family business after losing yet another job. She had hoped to escape her life as a witch running the family haunted mansion with her relatives. Upon her return, she finds that things haven't been going well while she's been away. What follows is skeletal murder, mystery, family escapades, and ghostly happenings.
Jane is a witch who has tried to live in the normal world, but she couldn't keep a job. She's finally out of options so she moved back home to the family's haunted mansion. Trouble is brewing as they all get ready for their fall season. There were some surprises as the enemy came, causing chaos. I liked the way the author brought all of the undead, ghosts, skeletons, vampires, and more into the story and made them part of the family, each with their own job at the public haunted house. Fun!
