ANGI MORGAN's new series, BODYGUARDS IN HEELS, is a lot of her favorite reads. A little magic, a little suspense, a little comedy and a whole lot of love.
Angi is a USA Today and Publisher’s Weekly best seller. Her first book, Hill Country Holdup, went on sale the very night it won the prestigious RWA Golden Heart award.
She drags her dogs –and husband– around Texas for research road trips so she can write off her camera. They now have a map with highlighted roads they’ve traveled. Every detour somehow makes it into a book.

Truly, truly awful. Badly written, even by the standards of this genre. The dialogue is clunky. Descriptions of actions are badly fumbled, often making it difficult to tell what is going on. The plot is non-existent.
Our heroine is Megan Harper, who narrowly avoids being kidnapped after being drugged at the airport. She's rescued by Texas ranger Jack MacKinnon, who is doing a favour for his partner Wade Hamilton, who has intel that Megan is in danger. They learn Megan has been framed for shooting and killing a county clerk. They go on the run from enemies with motives I'm not sure the author even fully got a grasp on.
I couldn't get my head around what was supposed to be going on. It's all to do with dodgy real estate dealings, and Megan works for the Texas Department of Insurance as part of the Fire Marshal's office, as some properties had been destroyed by fire. She was sent to investigate and doesn't know why, and becomes the target. Shouldn't the person who assigned her to the case be the target, since they obviously knew more than Megan did? And what do they hope to achieve by killing the county clerk? And what do they hope to achieve by framing Megan for it? What information do they want from Megan?
For the longest time, the reader is in the dark as to who is after Megan and why. It's hard to get invested in any suspense when you're clueless as to why what's going down is going down. You know what I mean? I think it's because the author didn't know either. Jack is all, "I trust Wade. We'll know the truth once we speak to him." Really, Jack??? I think I, like most people, want all the facts up front straight away if our lives are going to be in danger!!!!
This book isn't worth wasting more time complaining about. Although Jack and Megan were reasonably likable, they were trapped in an underplotted story, with lousy, indecipherable descriptions of action, and dialogue that didn't hang together. I read it one go because I knew if I put it down, I'd never want to pick it up again!
This starts out great, and then it just stumbles and trips and plumets into stilted, clunky prose. Apparently, only the sample got the competent editor.
Texas Ranger Jack MacKinnon receives a short but urgent phone call from his partner Wade Hamilton; Jack is to pick up Megan Harper at Bergstrom Airport. Megan is flying from Dallas to Austin, and she has the nagging feeling she’s being watched; but why? And she isn’t wrong, when a decidedly unfriendly man approaches her, and Megan gets rid of him rather creatively. Then there’s Jack, whom Megan doesn’t know, but he has Megan’s friend Therese on the phone, and Therese says someone is trying to kill Megan. A little while later, it seems all this is true, as it turns out Megan has been drugged!
And all this is in the first few pages as Angi Morgan takes us on another grand adventure in Texas! I loved not knowing any more than Megan and Jack about what was going on, and learning about it as they find out, with much difficulty and a lot of very cold water! Megan works for the State Fire Marshal’s Office, but she had once been a police officer, so she’s not clueless, and she reacted like a reasonable and professional individual throughout; if Megan didn’t stop breathing, I think I did in a few instances!
Bless Angi Morgan for that mention about the “electric shock”, which I will never forget, as well as other witty remarks that popped up here and there, and felt precisely how people think and act, even when their lives are in danger. The characters are great all-around, from Jack’s nosey neighbour to his father Jack Sr., with whom he has a complicated relationship. We see glimpses of Wade and Therese – whom I suspect will be in future books – and Wade seems just as reckless as Jack says he is. RANGER PROTECTOR’s plot is quite complex, and I just loved how the romance was ever so deftly blended in. Megan and Jack act on their attraction like reasonable adults whose lives are in danger, but still manage flirtatious and playful banter all the while. The make a great team and a great couple, with palpable chemistry, and I enjoyed so much that Megan did not act like a damsel in distress, even though in fact, she was.
I must say that the romance in RANGER PROTECTOR is absolutely perfect, and exactly what I expect in a romantic suspense; I believed in Megan and Jack every step of the way, and you know that theirs is a real happily ever after because of how they are towards each other. RANGER PROTECTOR is a solidly plotted suspense, very quick-paced, with appealing characters, and with just my kind of romance; this is a most excellent book!
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.
Ranger Protector by Angi Morgan was a thrill ride from the beginning. I literally couldn't put the book down until I finished reading.
Megan Harper is met at the airport by Texas Ranger Jack MacKinnon. Jack's there because his partner, Wade, has begged him to pick her up and protect her. Megan is totally confused as she is first met by a strange man who she creatively gets around and then Jack. As they leave the airport Megan finally succumbs to drugs that were slipped to her and wakes up to find herself in Liberty Hill, Texas. The fun is that it only gets crazier from there.
Ms. Morgan's writing captured me from the first page. The plot sped along at lighting speed with me being totally in the dark along with Megan and Jack. There were so many unanswered questions that kept popping up as Megan and Jack were on the run and yet Ms. Morgan allowed them time to get to know each other, too. The chemistry between Megan and Jack was "electric" in more ways than one but it never took over the story. I'm intrigued by Wade and can't wait to find out more about him as well as other members of Company B. There are a few threads that weren't completely tied up so I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series. Snappy dialogue with humor, danger, explosions and undercover operatives kept me engaged all the way to the end.
Captivating from the first page! With her unique style of spinning a tale, author Angi Morgan brings us another set of Texas Rangers to fall for! This kick off to a new series is fresh and appealing as we meet the cast of characters and start our first case with them leading us into danger. The characters were fairly well developed, and the plot held my attention. Looking forward to more in the series.
Texas Ranger Jack MacKinnon doesn't know what he's walking into when he blindly takes his partners cryptic message to heart for the fact that someone needs his help. He can't reach him back, and he has no further intel to go on, but he knows that he has to get Megan Harper to safety.
Megan isn't used to depending on anyone. She's tough and independent and enjoys solving her own set of crimes in her line of work, but when strange things start happening around her, she's willing to listen to what Jack has to say when he rescues her from danger. When they realize she's being framed for murder, they set out to find out what's really going on ... and why!
When Jack's partner asked him to protect a woman, he didn't hesitate to agree. But this was not nearly as easy as he was lead to believe. It started off in a bad way when he went to get Megan. She didn't think she needed someone to protect her even though she was being framed for a murder she didn't commit. She didn't understand why he thought he needed to take her away. So she didn't go with Jack easily. But she was glad to have him there when someone was trying to kill her.
Jack was the perfect hero. Not only was he a hottie but he was determined to keep Megan safe. I loved that about him. This was a fantastic suspense. I liked that I couldn't figure out who was trying to kill Megan or framing her. I loved the chemistry between these two and that they still flirted while they were on the run.
This is a great romantic suspense that kept me guessing right to the end.
Ranger Protector is the first in Angi Morgan’s new Texas Brothers of Company B series. Things start out with a bang and don’t stop moving for the entire ride. After an initially rocky start, Jack and Megan become a solid team working towards a common solution. Their chemistry grows as they work together. In some cases because they story moves so fast, I had trouble following the villain’s motivations and what Jack and Megan had figured out. However, by the end Morgan tied it all together neatly. Fans of fast paced suspense and Morgan’s other Texas heroes books will want to dive right in.
A fast-paced, explosive, lively story with humorous banter and intriguing characters who have chemistry in spades. Jack MacKinnon, aka Little Jack, the Texas Ranger and a son of a newly elected senator, was supposed to just do a favor for his friend and partner - rescue a damsel in distress. But things with Jack's partner apparently never go as they are supposed to go, and things escalate quickly, dangerously, and potentially deadly. Megan Harper has no idea what is going on. Is she being rescued or kidnapped, why do people want to attack her, why is deadly force being used, what, who, why -- And neither does the reader. This is the niche of the story, the reader gets the same information in real time as Megan and Jack. There are continues attacks, twist in the plot, and the reasons for them, or who is behind them, or why is Megan involved stays a mystery most of the story. This creates some chaotic confusion for Megan and Jack, as the clues are slow to come in and Jack's partner is missing in action. The chemistry between Jack and Megan was sizzling. The interactions between them were life-like, flirtatious teasing and games, as they are on a run for their lives, trying to survive. This new suspense-filled mini-series starts with a hair-raising story that at times felt like all over the map until the strings are finally pulled together, answers are found, and culprits are named, reasons for attacks given. While the case was satisfactorily solved, lots of curiosity and fascination towards the still open-ended questions were left in my mind, mainly about the secondary characters and how do they play into the whole picture. I believe this is going to be one riveting series of fiery suspense and enthralling romance with alluring characters. An entertaining and captivating start, that's for sure! ~ Four Spoons
Having to wait to re-borrow this book from the library took a week in between to get to finish it.
Jack picked Megan up at the airport as a favor to Wade whom was doing a favor for his friend Teresa, but Wade couldn't get to the airport as he was being pursued by the men Teresa had been working under cover with (which I have a feeling, Wade and Teresa's story might just be the finale to these books, if he can stay out of trouble long enough.
Teresa and Megan knew each other from the academy. Teresa went to work for what we can assume would be a 3-letter abbreviated government company while Megan left to as an intelligence agent at TDI. But they hadn't connected or spoke since that time.
Wade was the one that was suppose to pick up Megan, but I think Jack was eventually happy he took the job off his fellow rangers hands. Even if it cost him a truck, being shot at constantly and his trying to reign in the attraction between him and Megan!
All in all, this was an excellent book. Full of adventures that never seemed to slow down! It will be exciting to hear about what happens to Wade in the next book and if Teresa happens to make an appearance!
Angi Morgan is one of my favorite Harlequin Intrigue authors. She always releases well-written stories with lots of action and suspense. Ranger Protector is the first book in this author's Texas Brothers of Company B series and she has once again kept me turning the pages to see what will happen next.
I love stories about the Texas Rangers and Jack MacKinnon, the hero, is a great representative for the Texas Rangers in this story. Not only is he strong and brave but he is also smart and a quick thinker. The heroine, Megan Harper is also a great character as she is strong-willed, brave and intelligent. These two characters have great chemistry together and this always leads to an enjoyable read for me.
If you like suspense, action and fun, flirty dialogue with a HEA then I suggest you grab this book and get to reading!
I really enjoyed this intriguing romance. I bought this at the local library book sale and I voluntarily chose to review this story. I've given this a 5* rating. This pulled me in pretty quickly and kept my attention throughout. Lots of action and fires. Lots of sparks too in this matchup. On to my next.
This book was really good. There is crime involved in this and then there is a ranger that you just fall in love with. Angi has her heart in all of her books . She hit the ball to the outfield with this one.
