Crystal is the best PokeSupe girl protagonist and I will die on this hill! Which makes her redesign into "Lyra" in HGSS hurt all the more... Also, she would totally kill it in the "Pokemon Legends Arceus" timeframe, with the multiple catching requirements for that game's pokedex.
This series has mostly been up and down, but the last few volumes have been pretty good. I'm enjoying the Suicune arc that brings together a number of different recurring characters and plot threads. I also think that Crystal is one of the more interesting trainers that's been introduced so far.
This was a very good book! I read this when i was supposed to be sleeping but i read this book since i read the first 3 chaptors and was hooked and had to read the whole thing whitch lead to me being 1 hour and 10 over me bed time... I will never regret reading this.
So there's one thing that I need to say for this volume. First and foremost, the obvious, pointless, and poorly done editing. This is a manga that had a rotting zombie Psyduck corpse, an Arbok chopped in half, and Team Rocket attempting (multiple times) to murder children. Why did they feel the need to poorly edit Crystal's mother slapping her?
And if you're going to edit it, don't make it so obvious. They redrew her arm so that it's at an odd angle behind her (because they can't have it in front, blocking the original artwork), and replaced the "SLAP" sound effect with "GLARE". The problem is, everyone is still acting as if Crys was slapped. Pokemon are flinching, Crys is falling backwards as if hit with some force, she's on the ground rubbing her cheek next panel. It's obvious she got hit. The edit is just laughable.
So, dropped a star for obvious censoring. It's kind of strange, though. Like I said before, this manga hasn't had any problem with violence or freaky stuff in the past that seems worse to have in a children's manga than a slap to the face. And there isn't any other example of censorship this blatant (not saying there wasn't earlier censorship, just none that caught my attention).
As for story, this volume doesn't have too much in there. Once again, a large portion isn't actually about Crys, about 4 and a half chapters. Three are devoted to having gym leaders face off with the legendaries (again), and one and a half is devoted to Surge doing stuff.
As with previous Crystal volumes, the stuff with Crys is pretty interesting, but I didn't care for the interludes as much.
Just chugging along with these just ok manga volumes. Crystal faces the Suiccune and when she is unsuccessful in capturing it, loses her will as a trainer and apparently her ability to capture. So her mother randomly pops up, she's of the PokeFan variety, and reminds her of her skills, Crystal binds her arms and learns to capture with her feet again. Lt. Surge pops back up to try and solve the masked man mystery to see who is leading the Johto Region of Team Rocket as Giovanni is still missing. And Yellow meets up with Crystal to aide her on her journey but they get sucked into a whirlpool.
So, we're still moving and not much is still happening. We'll be reunited with Gold and Silver next volume and I guess see where they take us.
The whole storyline of Suicune challenging trainers is interesting, but the series has yet to provide a compelling reason for Why? What is the point of the sudden shift? The cliffhanger at the end of this volume hints at some connection there (finally!), but there really should have been some emotional investment and purpose earlier.
Crystal’s struggle after her perceived failure was a cool story beat, though, even if the way it was resolved was… ehh.
I really wanted to like this series, but it just keeps alternating between ‘cool’ and ‘bad’ with astonishing consistency.
3/5 - That bit where Crystal’s mom very obviously smacks her, but the Viz release edited the frame to be a super-intense GLARE is freaking wild to me.
This series continues to go very well and, despite the absence of Gold and Silver, the development of Crystal's character is pretty important to the ongoing Johto storyline. This series never disappoints...the art, story and characters are very consistent and it's a pleasure to see VIZ doing a cleaner job on the translations now.
I sort of think this, primarily because I've rarely had occasion to have the entire run of a Pokémon series, as "See random scenes of kids and/or the odd adult do a monster battle" with some vague plot that I can barely follow because any particular volume I've read has generally involved SO MANY different parties and switches between ALL of them such that there really isn't enough story to follow WITHOUT "catch(ing) 'em all" as far as the books go.
Like, I can follow the short Crys subplot of she's in the middle of tracking Suicune and suddenly realises she's horrendously outmatched, loses all her confidence, then mentally reverts back to a time when she had broken both her arms and could barely do anything with just her legs (but is how she developed strong kicks). Then her VERY CHILDISHLY DRESSED MOTHER shows up by PURE CHANCE and scolds her for losing all hope just because she lost once, and from there she goes back to her "roots" and retrains with her arms restrained.
Then it switches to a bunch of other groups who get only one chapter (which are curiously short, when I think about it, compared to a lot of other Japanesegraphic novels* in specific). Of these groups, I recognise one of the gym leaders but have forgotten his name** even though I probably JUST read it and Amarillo/I guess here it's "Yellow," and the rest are either new or throwaway characters.
I don't really have a solid opinion on the story as a result—I would need to have followed from the beginning to give a true rating on how it's going. Mostly I read it even piecemeal because the art is still very nice and consistent, and I like to see which Pokémon I still recognise, having played two of the console games and Pokémon GO until recently-ish (stopped because I got tired of having to keep upgrading my phone just to keep playing ONE game).
On the whole, still a relatively good series for younger readers, other than the "pre-teens run off completely on their own to explore the world and have cockfighting matches" aspect, haha.
*tagged that way because I didn't bother making a tag specifically for manga **PROBABLY Lt. Surge?
I enjoyed this book a good bit, but I still dislike when it ignores Crystal completely- at least now Gold and Silver are mentioned again, I didn't like it when they just switched so suddenly. Crystal is a good character, I still enjoy her, and I quite liked the gym leader Janine, as well as the little training chapter. (But Crystal's Mom is kinda strange... and mean (?) I also realized after reading the other reviews that there is a censored slap scene involving her. I knew the scene looked awkward and strange, but I didn't realize it was censored. This manga is decently dark for a kid's book, but that ONE scene was too much? Ugh. It's dumb that they decided to censor. ) Though still, I'm looking forward to the next one!!
(This book contains violence, as well as small amounts of blood. I would give it an age rating of 8+)
Fun continuance of the Gold/Silver/Crystal arc. I am not taking this or any Pokemon manga as it’s intended for kids and I’m reading it purely for a nostalgia standpoint. One can breeze through these quickly and I personally enjoy the artwork more than the story, even though it’s surprisingly creative and somewhat interesting. I like how well the manga intertwines with the games.
I have three more to read and that’s it for me with this series. I look forward to reading more manga in the future.
I have very little to say different than my last review. Crystal still best character in Johto, Legendaries still cool, masked man is still an incredibly intriguing villain. I will say the big new thing for me is Janine, Koga's daughter. I hope she gets more to do later on in the series. I already like her a lot. Plus we got to see more of Lt. Surge and Sabrina! All in all, great volume. I adore this series. 😭
Nice to see more actions with the Legendary Beasts and also to see that these pokemon are actually much more intelligent then the usual pokemon in that they have a goal and seems like they have a plan. Also nice to see follow ups of the ex-Team Rocket Triad as we see or at least get hints at what they are doing and unfortunately my least favorite character comes back in a starring role.
Continuing adventures with Crystal here, and another good volume. We get to see more of Yellow again, and the interactions between the two of them are great, and quite amusing at times. Still continuing mystery as to what the three legendary pokemon are up to, which hopefully we will find out about soon. Good fun read overall.

This volume’s a definite step up from the last. The pacing is lightning quick and the plot elements from the ninth volume are beginning to get some progression. There’s maybe a bit too much filler/fluff here but it’s mostly inoffensive.
This one kept me on my toes--it was difficult to put down! Some more twists occurred in the story, and the old and new characters are meeting up. Plus, there were some interesting features of the Pokedex at the end of the book that are very impressive compared to the Pokedex in the games!
I like this series though I find it strange that it has shown Pokémon poisoned, electrocuted, beaten to near death, cut in half and even killed, censors Crystal's mom slapping her.
