WOW this was a great story. Excellent Narration by Therese Plummer. (audible review)


It was a bit to be continued but luckily the next book is out on audible and I have already started it.

This book is a fast paced, full of action, kicking butt, some espionage, murders, conspiracy's and a little romance thrown in.

I love Lizzy and Dalton together. They have some great chemistry together, which is good when you a little romance thrown into a action packed story. There is so much great dialogue throughout the entire book. All the characters are awesome so far! Love Alex. Dude.... LOL

Thank you Kathleen Brooks from getting out of the (inbred) Bluegrass! This series is so much more fun and entertaining. (women of power series was good too).

As for the narration. Its awesome! Therese Plummer is doing a super job on the all the voices, especially the men's voices, they sound like men. Her reading voice is excellent! She reads with emotion as called for making the story come to life.

I highly recommend this book and the next one in the series!

This was a surprising little gem I found in Audible Escapes!

Disclosure - I've found many gems on Audible Escape but of late I just keep stumbling upon duds. In fact, for every decent to good book I've read, I've read or DNF three bad ones. It has not been a good reading year for me so far.

Having said all that, I very much enjoyed this book, and I'm so glad I stumbled upon it. In fact, I stumbled upon it because I was reading this other Audible Escape book that I was about to DNF and wanted to see if I could find anything worth reading, and I did!

The Highlights

I would categorize this book as a political-thriller-romance. It's well written, the pacing is great, and the characterization is solid, especially for the main character Elizabeth James.

The short of it is that Elizabeth is a former FBI agent who's wrongfully terminated, things happen, and a year later, she's hired by the President for a secret mission to unravel a worldwide conspiracy. Along the way, she's paired up with different people who help her investigate this conspiracy and deal with those who are trying to bring chaos into the world. While all this is happening, she meets her love interest, who's fine though I have some issues with.

The portrayal of the conspiracy is very realistic; it's basically like a dramatization of our current battle with terrorism and world politics. It doesn't feel unbelievable at all; you feel that something like this can definitely happen.

I liked most of the characters, some of the secondary and tertiary characters need more development, but as this is a trilogy, they'll probably get more development as the story progresses. Overall, Elizabeth and her crew are a cool bunch.

Elizabeth herself is a total badass, and for the most part, I loved her character, there are a few things that bothered me, but they are minor. Her love interest doesn't get as much character development as she does, but he's still a likable guy.

The Lowlights
If there's one thing I hate in any sort of book is boy-dumb heroine, and this happens to Elizabeth a couple of times in the book. Given who she is and what she's been through, in my opinion, her behavior is out of place. There were a few scenes that bothered me, but the two that bothered me the most were when she allows this guy who's into her, but she's not into him just to grab her by the hips, and she just stands there. She should have pushed him away. The other scene happens towards the end of the book, while this very important thing is happening, and she's being all dreamy about her love interest, and it just felt out of place. Her complete focus should have been on the mission given its importance after it was done then think about the guy.

So, the relationship between the H/h is insta-lust, which I'm completely fine with, I think that's very believable, BUT there were hints that it might be insta-love and that's a big no-no for me. After knowing each other for less than a week, I don't think so.

The Narrator

Really excellent narrator, this is the first book I've listened to from this narrator and look forward to listening to other books by her. Her name is Therese Plummer. I highly recommend her.

However, because I'm being super critical today, I have a couple of qualms very small, though. I think she might be a native southerner, so all her voices had slight southern accepts, which I don't think everyone in DC/Virginia does. Especially a reporter, which I beleive uses a neutral accent. It's not a big deal, it just something I noticed.

The other qualm is that there's a character whose half Puerto Rican and half Scottish and she gives the character a Spanish accent. Unless that character grew up in PR, which is never mentioned, she shouldn't have a Spanish accept. I spent my childhood in PR, and I don't have a Spanish accent, and my cousins who grew up in the US have no accent at all even though their parents all speak Spanish. It's not a big deal, but I noticed it because I am Puerto Rican, so it piqued my interest.

Overall
I highly recommend the book, it's fast pace, smart, and a fun listen. It's also a good mix of drama, thriller and a little bit of romance for those of use who enjoy it. I'll probably start book two tonight.

Generally well crafted and an enjoyable read, but I am a stickler for details that pull me out of the story, and this book had a few too many for me. For example, the last two sentences of the Prologue are:

"He only made it three steps before he heard the pfft sound of a shot being fired from a silencer. He didn't even have enough time to recognize this was the end for him."

Yes, dramatic, but, first, silencers don't fire bullets, silenced weapons do. And second, since bullets generally travel much faster than the speed of sound, he wouldn't have heard a kill shot. Not a bang, not a pfft, nothing. Pulled me from the story before I was even at chapter 1. There were a number of others as well, each of which spoiled the flow, and I lost my suspension of disbelief.

This 3 part thriller starts off slow and builds its way up to an explosive and epic conclusion that features a shadow group assembled by the President to take down a group calling themselves Mollia Domini who want to control the world via assassins, the media and high ranking political figures. The ragtag group the president gathers are ex FBI, ex DEA and Air Force PJs along with a young computer hacker. Along the way they pick up others to help in the crusade to bring down the evil that is trying to destroy the world for their own nefarious purposes.

Part 1 introduces us to Elizabeth James who was forced out of the FBI after a failed mission got her partner and lover killed. She is currently working as a professor when she gets a call telling her that her father has died from an accident at the bar he owns that's caters to all the trainees at Quantico. Its not long before she figures out he was murdered and she is then contacted by the Chief of Staff for a secret meeting with the President. President Birch Stratton puts Lizzy in charge of assembling a team to try and find out who is behind all the bad things happening and being blamed on him.

Dalton Cage and his team of Airforce Pjs happened to get embroiled in one of the Mollia Domini sabotage missions which lead to Dalton being discharged after he disobeyed a direct order he didn't believe in. He was the first recruited to Lizzy's team. The two have a strong sexual attraction to each other but both put the mission first. Next to join is a young hacker who has done time in Leavenworth for hacking the government. He is excellent at his job but also a complete trip with his lingo and innocence in other areas.. Later in the book ex DEA agent Valeria McGregor joins the team - she is another one that was fired from her job when she got to close to something she shouldn't have. She has a chip on her shoulder but is tough as nails.

As this book is the setup for the series it's a little slow moving at the beginning as we are introduced to the characters (there is a HUGE cast of characters both main and supporting through the 3 books) and slowly get an idea of what's going on but it's not long before things pick up. Books 1 and 2 defiantly end on cliffhangers but as all 3 books are out you are able to just move onto the next one seamlessly.

Solid, well written story. The author creates a thriller with good characters and some interesting twist and turns. My only issue was the pace. For me, it was a bit slow but that is more me than the story line. Otherwise, a well worth read.

I m the fans of Kathleen Brooks, I read almost all of them, in love with roses sister, the small town that so many interesting characters be there.

I read her new series because I always like her sense of humor when she creates some side characters, however, the new series I didn't buy it. It's impossible, unrealistic, we are in the real world, you can't just tell me that u recruited six of guys to help u to ruin the international politics, fly to South China Sea, Netherlands, come n go wherever u like in shite house, camp David. I love Brooks books because there are some interesting characters, the love lines she created, sorry that I didn't find them in the new one.

What I have seen is a superwoman, unrealistic characters n things happened. I felt disappointed, we read because we want to stay away the real life but we are not asking this kind of story.

So this book....

If you don't think about what you're reading it is pretty good.

Lizzie is an ex-FBI agent who starts the book miserable. She lost her job because of a bad op that cost the life of her lover and fellow FBI agent. Added to that, her father dies unexpectedly. As she wallows in her sorrow Lizzie is summoned to the White house where the newly sworn in President alerts her to the fact that her father's death was not accidental but was a murder. And it was connected to a huge case he was working on for the President himself.

Because the President does not know who he can trust in the various agencies, he decides to assemble a small covert team that is answerable only to him and who is given the freedom to ferret out what exactly is going on. Lizzie is the leader of the team and in short order she meets the other members of her team: Alex a hacker who likes to say 'Dude' a lot (I loved Alex), Dalton a take-charge former para-rescuman who was discharged for not following a a bad order (and Lizzie's new love interest), Valeria an ex-DEA agent, and Tate an ex-reporter. They are being bankrolled by the President's long time BFF a tech industry giant (think Bill Gates and Steve Jobs only younger and hotter).

Their headquarters is Lizzie's dad's bar that she now owns. It is a popular watering hole for FBI, DEA and other agency traineess in Quantico and a perfect cover for them as they all work as bartenders and/or waitresses in the bar.

In no time flat, Lizzie is beating up people, killing people, pistol whipping people and globetrotting all over the place with Dalton at her back and Alex hacking in the way that hacking works in tv and books -- mainly he clones phone, disables cameras, redirects bugs, creates new identities and arranges transportation all over the world in the blink of an eye.

This book was fun, but could have been a lot more fun that it was if you didn't have to suspend so much belief. But the central plot where what they discover that they've stumbled over some vast worldwide conspiracy that involves an appropriately sinister latin name, complete with people constantly telling them "You have no idea what you are up against..." is just a bit too much for me.

At one point Lizzie hauls out a big conspiracy board ---



Yes, yarn was involved.

Even so I was entertained. The ensemble characters are pretty interesting and there was some good humor in places. I do wish she had toned Lizzie down a little bit. There were places when Lizzie's bad-assness just came off as so very try-hard. Instead of making me feel pumped and giving a "Hell Yeah!' I just rolled my eyes and said "Really, girl?"

Also there were places when this crack team just wasn't that bright. Lizzie's interrogation skills were not impressive.

Like I said, even with the eye rolling and the utter unbelievability of the multi-national conspiracy with a secret (yet very richly appointed) lair that wants... what? exactly, I was still entertained. A lot of that probably goes to Therese Plummer's narration and possibly Alex, the hacker dude.

So this was a much different type of book than what I have previously read by this author. I am a huge fan of Kathleen Brooks and all of her books. This book was just a little different. It was still very well written, the plot was really good... The characters were good although I feel like there were too many introduced into the "group" to keep up with the "who is who". Or maybe that was just me.
We first meet Lizzy dealing with the death of her partner in the FBI, then she is a professor at a college before going to Quantico to take over her Father's bar after he passes... Or was he killed?? Her former FBI father left her clues and secrets that she has to follow to not only stay alive but also save the world. His two best friends Buzz and Snip are the comic relief of the book, and there actually isn't very much. It is a very intense book. Lizzy first meets Humphrey, The president's (secret) right hand man who sends her on this daring mission. HE helps her assemble a team of a young computer Wizz that says "Dude" way too much, A handsome God of a man named Dalton who she immediately falls for, Then further meets the rest of the gang.
The bad characters are you average bad characters. The good characters are really good characters as well. Kathleen did a really good job on all of the characters, I understand Lizzy needing a bigger team to save the world, but I feel like more time should have been spent on Valeria and Tate so we could get a better understanding of who they are. Alex we have no question of.
Sebastian... Is he a good guy or a bad guy?? I guess that is the question.
You meet all different kind of people in this book. I will be continuing the series, I think I am just missing the hearts and rainbows riding the unicorns from her other books. So for my friend who doesn't like anything close to happily ever after... she might actually like this book.

Audiobook: Narrator - Therese Plummer

I picked this book because of this narrator and she did a wonderful job. I didn’t love her performance as much as I have in the past, but I think it’s due to being in a different romantic genre. That doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy her or the book, I just missed some of the quirky ways she spoke in the other series. That’s totally on me.





This was filled with so much action and adventure as this heroine works to uncover secrets hidden within the government. With so much espionage, terrorism and general bad guys, this book took off pretty much from the first page and never slowed down. I actually thought I was at the end a few times before something else happened to surprise me.

I suspect this would be perfect for anyone who enjoys more thriller, mystery, suspense than romance as this was weak in that department but not completely lacking. This doesn’t end on a cliffhanger, but all questions regarding the “bad guys” hasn’t been answered yet.

I'm not gonna lie to you, folks. I have to be honest here. I seriously think that some part of my booksih me always expects less from ebooks than from printed novels. Maybe that partly the reason, why I seldomly get past 3.5* with any book I read. That's probably owed to the fact that I only read the free ebooks from Amazon kindle, but pssst. Anyhooo...

Lizzy looks back on a very sad past. Her lovelife was disrupted by a failed mission and now, dischargeed from her old job and practically bullied into teaching at the FBI academy, she is surrounded by nothing but echoes of traumatic events.

Enter villain of the story. As if it weren't enough already, she receives a call informing her of her fathers death. Doesn't take long for this sneaky agent to find out that the circumstances might not have been of natural cause at all.

Enter funny character. Trying to pick up the broken pieces of what is left of her life, she finds a bald man sleeping on her couch one night. Within only few hours, she agrees to help the new President of the United states because her father's death was anything but natural. Instead, a web of mysteries appears infront of her, together with old men who try to set her up, an incredibly dorky dude that is the technical genius of the operation and a pretty hot rescue-specialist. The problem: consiparcy in the White House, a group of Puppet Masters that try to dominate the world and time running out of their hands.

The three of them - the dude, the hottie and her - start picking up trails and loose ends and it doesn't take them long to uncover what looks like puzzle pieces from one igantig jigsaw. what could go wrong? Well, just about anything.

For instance, that I was missing an achual arch of suspense. The underling mystery is always there and casts a shadow on everything that is happening, but I felt like everytime the rollercoster ride for action and thrills starts, the operator of the machine goes "woooop, what a ride, huh? better catch your breath". The only thing I had to catch was my rolling eyes.

Excellent..

Let me start by saying I detest cliffhangers and if I’d known this was one I would never have bought it. So, I’m glad I didn’t know, since it was a really great read. Loved the mystery and murder and intrigue and the romance.

I especially loved Elizabeth/Lizzy. Holy cow, that woman was one kick-ass chick. She had a shoot-out with Bram in an alley and killed him, and got herself shot, too. Then she was actually torturing Dan. Stabbed him in the hand then shot him right in the forehead when he started to go into this pocket for something. Oh, and she started to torture Phylicia, too. But all she had to do was tear off one of her nails and she gave it up. She was after all the conspirators that were trying to start problems all over the world and she didn’t care who she had to kill or torture to round them up. AND the former President of the United States was part of it.

This was such an exciting book and I can’t wait to read the next book in this series. The secondary characters were all fantastic: Our hero and love interest, Dalton. Alex, our computer genius. Valeria, the fired DEA agent. Sebastian, the millionaire footing the bill for all this. Humphrey Orville, the Chief of Staff, and President Stratton. What an awesome team.

There was some foreplay then fade-to-black. No sexual tension whatsoever but it was such a great read that I didn’t really care. Also, the F-bomb was used 23 times.

As to the narrator: Ordinarily I would say Therese Plummer is just OK, since she could use some more practice on her men’s voices. BUT, I gotta tell ya’ what she did with Alex’s voice was so much fun and was soooo funny. Every time she said the word “dude” I was smiling, sometimes laughed out loud. That boy was so awesome. And her emotions were incredible. More manly for the men though.

I picked up this book in the Nook store on my tablet because it seemed interesting and it was on sale for $1.99. My personal review of the book is as follows:

I really enjoyed the strong female main character and the (for lack of a better way of phrasing it) “secret spy” plot line, for me personally the main storyline of this book reminded me of a cross between “Covert Affairs”(it used to be on the USA network) and parts of “Scandal”(the secret parts of the government on the show and the president in this book reminded me a bit of Fitz”).

If you watch “The Blacklist” on NBC you’re probably going to enjoy the book as well; I also think that if you like “The Fixer” series by T.E. Woods you’ll probably really like this book as well.

Some of the plot points did seem a bit too far fetched for me personally(especially from the military side of things, maybe because of how I personally remember things from my time as a Marine wife).

The last half of the book as well as the ending has me wanting to download the 2nd book in the series as soon as I’ve finish posting this review, Overall I personally rate this book an 8 and a half out of 10.

4 Whispered Lies Stars

Government kinds of stories don’t usually do it for me. I don’t know I just always feel like I get lost somehow in the story.

But I love this author so I thought I would give it a try. Now I am really enjoying the interaction between all of the character especially the DUDE fellow. Hehe he is like the comic relief and I like him.

This story is told in a way that has held my attention. And the suspense aspect is pretty good too. I want to keep going on to book 2 but I have soooo many other series I want to get to…. I might still get there you never know.

I love the narration Therese Plummer is fantastic!

*You don't have to like my review but its 100% my opinion, and I am allowed to have it.*

It's hard to read about smart people who never do the logical thing. In this book, it was like 1+1=5000, and we were expected to understand how that makes sense. I just couldn't suspend my disbelief on this one.

The protagonist, Lizzie, was pretty annoying and self-important. One of my pet peeves. It felt like the author thought Lizzie was sooo cool and in order to prove it to the readership, "badass" scenes were added that really just made Lizzie look dumb, and like she was on a power trip. Aka the knife in the chair scene. *eyeroll. Bite the hand that feeds you why don't you. I wish that she outsmarted people rather than being the stereotypical abrasive female agent cliche'.

Speaking of cliches'! DUDE. DUUUUUUDEEEE.

I really did like this book and can't wait to read more from Web of Lies series but as usual I'm just not patient for waiting especially a Kathleen Brooks book series
Love all the secrecy going on and also the love stories within the lines between Lizzie and Dalton the will they or won't they stay together, I also love Alex please please don't let anything happen to Alex he is a sweetheart ( I hope he gets his own love story).
I'm not sure about Sebastian Abel there is something fishy about him on the fence about others too
Hope to get through this series without pulling my hair out waiting lol

Really great new series.

I have read every book Ms. Brooks has written, and never been disappointed, and this book is no different. A little darker than some of her books, but so engrossing. A secret group answerable only to the president is formed to take on internal terrorists that want to take over America and the rest of the world. Her characters and plot are top notch, and I look forward to reading more of this series, and getting to know and understand the characters better. I would give it ten stars if I could.

Kathleen Brooks is one of the best authors around. She weaves a believable story with strong characters and twists that keep the reader guessing

Web of Lies follows members of a worldwide organization who create chaos and destruction that isn't afraid to kill off world leaders in order to gain power and rule the world. Against this large, powerful group of evil is a small team of fighters who have just as much desire to stop them.

Intrigue, conspiracies, murder, manipulation, and pure evil make for suspenseful reading. I can't wait for book #2.

You wont be able to put it down.

I am totally surprised by the ability to go from romantic comedy to serious intrigue and go off the top of the charts. Ms Brooks has written an outstanding story that keeps you on the edge of your chair. I just hate to have to be left hanging until April. Wish it would come out earlier.
If you like Kathleen Brooks writing, I highly recommend this book.

OMG!!!! This was an amazing starter to a new series by Kathleen Brooks!!! I loved it and I couldn't put it down! I cannot wait for the next book!!!! You can't go wrong with Kathleen Brooks, it's another awesome series and I for one can't wait to see what happens next and who truly is involved in this web of lies.

Whispered Lies

The suspense in this book made me want to keep reading. I wanted to know who and why throughout the book. Add in a lite romance and you have a great romantic suspense book.

Different story line than Keeneston, Kentucky (which I lovei") but excellent! I wish it would have been lxt one!

Can't wait for the sequel to this! This author has gone into this murder/mystery as a seasoned pro. Highly recommend. First in a series.

Amazing! I love this book!!!!! I have been a long time fan of Kathleens BlueGrass books (because hey Kentucky girl and they are awesome!) so I had to try this. Now I am addicted. Full of action, intrigue and HOTNESS! lol
