Edit: I read this book last year and it was very helpful during that particular season. I decided to read it again for a refresh. It wasn't quite as helpful the second time around but it was good to be reminded of some important choices I need to make on a daily basis.
I really love Elizabeth George's work... There's something about her writing that really connects with me. This book was encouraging and had some really good points and reminders - unfortunately, I've read SO many of her books, the information is starting to feel repetitive. However, it's still information and truths I need to be reminded of so it doesn't really bother me! I loved the chapters on waking up early (something I've always struggled with), making time for prayer, managing our time well, and developing our minds. The last two chapters on priorities were also excellent!
From the title, I was expecting something different. George highlights important things we should be doing as women: prioritizing daily Bible reading, not gossiping, having right priorities, praying, not worrying, along other things. All good things, but nothing I hadn’t already heard before.
I’ve read other books by the author and enjoyed them, but this one was different. The overall tone of the book felt like “this is what I’ve done/decisions I’ve made and if you do it, your life will be so much better.” Some of the decisions are definitely beneficial, while others don’t take into consideration the different seasons of life we all face, so the decisions we make will look different, albeit still within a biblical framework. I don’t think that was the tone the author intended to convey, but to me, that’s how it came across.
It was still a good book, and I would recommend it/read it again.
I’ve been reading this as part of my morning time and it is not overly profound, but I definitely benefited from the encouragement to make better choices from a Biblical perspective to have a more God honoring life. I will be rereading this one for sure.
Thank you Harvest House and Netgalley for an ARC of this book.
This book is difficult for me to review. I acknowledge that I choose to read this book, knowing it had some Christian basis however the reference to bible quotes (often 3 or more to a page) was too much for me personally. That aside I will attempt to give this review based on the remainder of the content of the book.
Each chapter begins with a relevant bible quote and I enjoyed the chapters starting this way. In the very beginning of the book the author speaks about choices in life, and that we all have and make choices either through action or indecision. The idea for a beautiful life is to make good choices.
The book is based around the authors 7 steps to wisdom. The steps begin with Stop, basically being mindful of waht is occurring in the present moment and pausing before reacting. The steps continue on, however this is where for me the book became very heavily reliant of the scriptures. The basis of the book goes on to relying on scriptures, prayer and seeing counsel before making decisions.
This book would hold appeal to a practicing Christian reader, who has not read any motivational or decision making books prior to this. It goes into the basics of life such as having a plan for the day, so as not to waste precious hours.
Looking beyond the heavy scripture basis of the book I found it did not give anything new if you have ever read any introductory book on decision making or mindfulness.
Thank you for the opportunity to read and review this book.
This book was excellent! It takes the reader through different areas of life and helps her think through how to bring both heart and life into agreement with God’s Word. Very practical and easy to read!
Excellent book as an individual study or a group study. It gave me a lot to think about and encouraged me to begin doing what God has called me to do with my life!
