Summary: The Gentleman in Moscow: Book by Amor Towles

Rate this book
The Gentleman in Moscow is a novel written by Amore Towles. The novel’s plot is set in the beginning of the 20th century Russian Empire and follows the story of Count Alexander Ilyich Rostov and his life in the Hotel Metropol where he has been under house arrest for thirty-two years.

The 20th century was one of the most turbulent times in the history of Europe. Old political systems were deemed obsolete. People wanted change; they wanted rights for all, not just for the wealthy. In the Russian Empire ‘old and new’ clashed in blood, violence, and death. During the 20th century, being noble was not very popular in Russia. Communists slowly but surely gained more and more trust from the people. Since their agenda blamed several groups of people for every misfortune that happened, being a count became very dangerous.

Alexander Ilyich Rostov knows this. He almost gets killed but is saved at the last moment in the most peculiar way.
An interesting novel, filled with historical segments, The Gentleman in Moscow is more than just a story of one man. It is a story of survival and uncertainty in dire times.

A Gentleman In Moscow is a book of delights and fireworks surprises for a grand and satisfying finale.
Covering over 32 years, living in a grand hotel, the Metropole In Moscow, Count Alexander Rostov summons up remembrance of things past. The novel references other works of literature: Proust, Tolstoy, Chekhov, in Alex’s commonplace living to make the most of his reduced circumstances.
His model for living is Robinson Crusoe, the procurement of practicalities. “He vowed to master his circumstances.”
How he chooses to live under tyranny, he will pick a philosophy: he will have a good heart, he will attend to the particulars.
He uses his powers of discernment, good heart, honor and nobility of spirit to create a fellowship that brilliantly rises to the occasion of resistance, each in their own way. An aristocracy of the spirit.

Loved this book! I think there are five books within the book and every time one ended I thought I’d just read the perfect story. But then I was happy that the story continued. Amazing descriptions of people places and things, and all in all a romance, a mystery, and historical novel. Terrific and I’m going to look for more by this author.

First Historical Fiction book as an adult. I throughly enjoyed the ride this book takes you on. The first 60/70 pages start off slow but it is building the stage for the ending. The development of Count Rostov shows that we all have a choice in how deal with the cards that are dealt in our life. He played the hand he was dealt well!

Beautiful Writing....interesting old world style & historical fiction from an intellectual point of view.
Not a lot of action until the end. However all small stories lead to tying in together. Everything has a point.

I really enjoyed the historical fiction of this book. It was an interesting plot about a Russian aristocratic sentenced to house arrest in a luxury hotel. This book can be considered a thriller -definitely a page turner.

Dull. Precious. Lame premise. Didn’t think much of his writing style. Couldn’t get beyond first 50 pages or so.

Beautifully written with wonderful character development. Charming tale of a truly erudite man facing trials after he returns to his homeland radically changed by the Bolshevik Revolution.
