Frig. I got super invested in this book without realizing it. Dark, but in all the best ways.
Here we have a story that delves into the taboos of dissociative identity disorder… and this paved way to a cast that will stick with you for a long, LONG time. The head-hopping here was managed in such a creative way. It’s a hard thing to nail, but when done right, it really highlights where the action is happening AND gives a strong feel of character.
Miki is my favourite for far too many reasons to list (he’s perfect; don't get me started).
As someone with an unhealthy relationship with alcohol, I can say his situation never felt judgy. It was addressed with caring and concern… and oddly came off comforting? I was impressed.
UGH. I only want good things for this precious soul.
I also really adored Rory. And Melodie!! Her interactions with Miki had to be my favourite scenes. I have a thing for reveals, so their dynamics had me hooked. Her patience and understanding was so admirable... I honestly hope she inspires readers on how to properly care for friends with mental health.
The way the characters communicate with one another was really cool (ie Miki leaves a message, Darren find and replies later). It had a cohesive flow and made details feel important (and cute at times). Unique dynamics like this make fun reads.
And now Poppy.
Oh Poppy…
Her introduction was well paced; when the mystery of her disappearance started to be questioned, I’d been successfully baited. I wanted answers at the same rate. …And good lord did we get them. This CRUSHED me (no spoilers here; you’ll just have to read) It was dark, powerful, and packed with feels.
The last line of the book was so poetic and tied everything up so nicely and-
Just put this book on your list and keep this author on your radar. You won't regret it.
