'Matsyagandha' is a historical novel based on ancient Indian epic Mahabharat. It is about a fisherman's girl Satyavati. King of Hastinapur Maharaja Santanu badly falls for her after seeing her once. Santanu's son Devvrat, later called Bheeshm, asks the fisherman to give his daughter Satyavati, for his father Santanu. But for this, the fisherman asks Devvrat to take a pledge that he will not become Hastinapur's king and also remain unmarried throughout his life. After Bheeshma takes the pledge, the fisherman hands over Satyavati for king Santanu. The novel revolves around Satyavati, her feelings, her desires, her emotions, her thinking. They are presented honestly. The Novel carries messages in background. The lengthy dialogues between its characters enriches the mind.
Matsyagandha by Narendra Kohli- Books by Narendra Kohli on the epic Ramayana and Mahabharata bring forth situations where two or more solutions are available to a problem and the thought process by which the characters choose a particular solution depending on their value system in which they have been brought up. Matsyagandha is a tribal girl married in a civilized society and re-named Satyavati. She is the adopted daughter of fisherman Dasraj who also looks after ferries to carry men and material across the river. She has one son Rishi Vyas from Rishi Parashar. Shantanu, Kuru King on a trip sees Matsyaganda and falls in love with her. Her father is ready to marry her to the Shantanu on condition that her children should take the throne of Kurus after Shantanu. Shantanu alredy has a son Dev Vrat from his first marriage to Ganga. Shantanu goes into silence on the issue. Dev Vrat understands the wishes of his father and vows that he will remain a celebate and serve the Kuru King. Matsyagandha’s father sows the seed of distrust in her against Dev Vrat that he is elder son, second he is brave and later on he may claim the Kingdom of Kuru. Later on as both the children of Satyavati- Chitrangada and Vichitravirya die without leaving an heir behind. Who should inherit the throne is now the dilemma. Satyavati asks her son Rishi Vyas to procreate children by NIYOG from the wives of these two sons. They have three sons, Dhritrashtra, Pandu and Vidur. The dilemma narrated in the book is that Satyavati distrusts Dev Vrat but when difficult situations come, she depends on both her sons- Vyas and Dev Vrat. She does not understand them but both sons are aware of her mental dilemma. The Book is written in Hindi, it needs to be translated in English and other regional languages so that the rich heritage of Indian culture spread in readers and connoisseurs. It is a worth reading book.
I loved the book and can’t stop praising the writer Shri Narendra Kohli for writing such a detailed description of Satyawati. After reading Mahasamar 1 (Bandhan) and Matsyagandha, I got to know how her ambitions caused the Great War of Mahabharat; how she made Bheeshm so vulnerable for his entire life. I gave only 3 star for Matsyagandha as I had already read the Bandhan and I found this book as the succinct account of Satyawati’s character extracted from Bandhan. Someone who reads it first time will find work a worth of 5 star.
