Redemption: Stories of Hope, Resilience and Life after Gangs

Rate this book
Why do people join gangs? Once entrenched in a life of crime with its realities of incarceration, addiction, power, and money, is it possible to ever walk away? This triumphant collection of ten personal life stories from ex-gang members enlightens, surprises and inspires. These first-person accounts illuminate the harsh reality of living as a marginalized person, often neglected and in poverty. Unexpectedly, their stories share heartfelt commentary on topics such as peace, joy, forgiveness and hope. Readers will be challenged to question their preconceived notions as they are given an illuminating look at individual lives behind crime statistics. This book covers territory that often doesn't get into the news media and creates connection through our shared humanity.

It’s fitting that we get this book about people that have gotten out of gangs in their life and struggle afterwards while being in prison. Never being in a gang or knowing gang members I thought this was an interesting topic and liked this read.

A different story that had a lot of the same underlying issues that was really quite sad to read.

I really connected with Gary’s story and his life in the CFL and Brazilian jiu-jitsu after getting out of the gang game. I can attest to what jiu-jitsu has done for me and helped with my anxiety and my confidence.

Overall, it’s empowering to hear the stories during one of the lowest times in my life and seeing that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. 4⭐️

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed and appreciated the stories in this book. I was interested in the topic but thought that I would have to make myself read through. It wasn't like that at all. Each person tells their own story so it is essentially a collection of short stories. Most of us can identify with the very human struggles of the individuals who have shared their experiences and I personally felt encouraged and inspired by what they shared. Well written and thoughtfully produced. Worth your time.
