Every day, we pass people walking along the side of the road and spare them little to no thought. But who are these people? Where are they going? And more importantly, where have they been?
There's Tom, a kind hearted man who left home at the age of 17 and has spent the last 15 years wandering the countryside, homeless. There's Holly, a young, high spirited woman who ran away from home as a child and has spent the time since laying low and hiding from the man who drove her to the road. There's Lynyrd, a violent vagabond sociopath who is known all across the country by another name due to his horrendous crimes. And finally, there's James, a 15 year old boy who, unlike any of the others, has lived on the road for as long as he can remember and plans on doing the same for the rest of his life.
When these four meet, they are met with reflections of themselves, their fears, their fate- everything which they were trying to escape. Tensions within the group begin to mount, and as dark secrets are revealed, it becomes clear to each wanderer that eventually they will be pitted against each other in what may lead them down a road to their deaths.
From the farmlands of Montana, to the small towns of Texas, through cold winds of winter, to stowing away on cargo trains and fleeing across the deserts of Arizona, this novel explores the fascinating, and often times alluring world of the road. The road can be romantic, it can be violent, it can be terrifying, it can be freeing- and it can be whatever else you want it to be.
Set against the revolving landscape of the American countryside and told from the point of view of vagabonds, "Finding the Willows" is a multi decade spanning exploration into the lives of four homeless wanderers as they make their way across the country and into a world that will change them forever.
