Wicked Captive is the 5th book in USA Today Bestseller and Amazon #1 Author, Carole Mortimer’s, Regency Sinners series.
Author’s All the books in the very hot Regency Sinners series are complete and HEA stories. Books in the series are connected by the friendship of the heroes.
Lord Jericho Black, the Marquis of Wessex, is not looking forward to the visit of his ward, Lady Jocelyn Forbes, to his Devonshire home.
Jocey is not actually Jericho’s ward but his father’s. But as his father lives permanently in Scotland, and is considered to be eccentric by polite members of Society and more than a little strange by the majority, Jericho has taken it upon himself to act as Jocey’s guardian in his father’s stead these past three years.
A bachelor of five and thirty, Jericho finds the role of guardian to a young lady difficult enough at the best of times, but finding himself charged with the unpleasant duty of proving or disproving whether Jocey is guilty of treason, is going to make this visit even more taxing than usual.
Jocey is looking forward to seeing and being with Lord Jericho Black again, the man she has secretly been in love with since he became her guardian when she reached the age of eighteen. She is no longer that gauche and awkward young girl, and she is determined Jericho will now see her as a desirable woman, and worthy of his attention.
From the moment Jocey arrives in Devon, even more beautiful than Jericho remembers her to be, and possessed of the sophistication and confidence of a woman who knows her own mind, Jericho quickly realizes it is not irritation he now feels toward Jocey but desire. A desire he is finding it more and more difficult to resist. When Jericho receives the shocking news of one close friend’s unexpected death, and the serious injury of another, it becomes imperative he learn the truth as quickly as possible, so as to avoid more blood being shed.
Even if it requires Jericho make Jocey his prisoner and seduce the truth from her.

FINAL DECISION: Okay but not extraordinary. It added to the storyline in the entire series, but the relationship part didn't work for me as well. The connection wasn't as strong.
THE STORY: Jericho Black, Marquis of Wessex, is up for his investigation of a potential traitor. His target is his ward Lady Jocelyn Forbes. Jocey has just returned from France (which is one reason she is a suspect) and is pleased that Jericho is taking more of an interest in her because she had been attracted to him since Jericho took over her guardianship when she was eighteen. Jericho's problem is that his first sight of Jocey in months has him staggered to realize what a beautiful woman she has become.
OPINION: I wanted to like this one more than I did. The guardian/ward story had interesting possibilities. I also liked the characters: Jericho with his world weary attitude that is taken by Jocey's light and joy; Jocey with her determination and caring for others.
The execution of the story, however, had elements that bothered me. The strongest one was that Jericho knew Jocey. If we had picked up the story when Jericho hadn't spent time with Jocey, his mistrust and anger towards her might have worked. But here it seems clear that he knows her enough that he shouldn't be so distrustful.
My other complaint is that while the two engage in various sexual activities, I wanted there to be some culmination to their relationship. It appears that happens totally off screen at the end which was disappointing.
WORTH MENTIONING: Now I really want to know about the woman that Stonewall is going to investigate.
CONNECTED BOOKS: WICKED CAPTIVE is the fifth book in the Regency Sinners series. The book is a standalone although there is a continuing story line about a woman who is a traitor and the men trying to find her.
The male lead was completely unlikeable. An irrevocable ASS who takes advantage of his ward, gaslights her and blames her for his attraction to her. I do like alpha assholes, but not ones who pushes the blame on a woman just because he wasn't man enough to own up to his desires. Sure, blame the woman for his cock stand!
I hated how he sexually touched Jocelyn, and then treated her coldly afterwards without any form of respect she deserved. Poor Jocelyn, she was an endearing heroine who wanted his love and affection, but the man treated her terribly. Even the excuse of her probably being a French spy was ridiculous when it was obvious the woman couldn't even hurt a fly or puppy. It just DIDN'T MAKE SENSE! And the dumb man couldn't even see that even though she's his ward for years.
I would have found a dub-con/non-con featuring a possessive hero more romantic than this crap of a male lead who may have big dick energy, but couldn't make up for it in his attitude.
The hero was sort of excessively an ass for the first 3/4 or so, being super critical toward her when his real problem was with himself, and using scant evidence as justification to act out some sort of dark fantasy while still taking a 'guilty until proven innocent' approach to interrogation. It was super flimsy reasoning and made him not all that appealing to me. And the heroine was too wishy-washy and passive for my taste (with brief moments of the complete opposite thrown in here and there...). So not one of my favorites. But, that said, it wasn't boring, and had some interesting steam, so I'm still going to give it 3 stars.
Another winner by Mortimer! Absolutely loved this book. It was a little angsty at times, which usually isn’t my cup of tea, but it was an enjoyable story with interesting characters.
This is a fast paced story about Jericho and his ward, Jocey and all the fun and games that go on while Jericho tries to find out if Jocey is in fact the lady who is betraying England and the Crown to The French. You can tell from the title that one of them is held captive, but I'm not saying who it is though I am quite sure you can guess. As usual, Carole Mortimer has written an entertaining and enjoyable stand-alone book that I just couldn't put down and I am quite happy to recommend it as well as the rest of this series.
This one is hard for me to review. I enjoyed the previous four books in this series, but it's hard when you hate the so called hero. Jericho treats Jocelyn so badly it can only be called physical and emotional abuse. Yet, she responds to him in everyway including fall in love with him.
He recanted his bad behavior by the end but I found it lacking in sincerity, but I guess the heroine didn't.
I hope book 6 which I'm still looking forward to has a more likeable hero.
This book is number five in the series, that only gets better with each new book. The plot is full of emotional twists and turns, and the characters are portrayed wonderfully. This is a book that will appeal to anybody who loves steamy historical romances with plenty of suspense.
I have read pretty much all of Carole Mortimer books because they are hot, the male characters are hot and sexy.... except this pathetic wimp.
Out of all the romance books I have EVER read, this guy is the worst (H) of all time. And I have read over a thousand romance novels in my life! And I never despised a Hero as much a this piece of dog poo.
This guy is hot then cold, then horny, then cruel, then untrusting, then sweet, then horny again. His words are hurtful and verbally abusive. He could give a flip about the sweet little "lamb" that is his ward that's deeply in love with him. And she just keeps taking it! Over and over!
Like I said, I love Carole's books because they are HOT. This book had 3 good scenes. No juicy bits to enjoy. And WORSE of ALL......
SPOILER ALERT:
They never actually make love!!!!! No taking the virgin gently, romantically, lovingly. The very last page of the book, she asks him to "take" her.... and the books last sentence read..... "and so he did"!!!! Are you kidding me!!
Don't get me wrong, I love - love - LOVE romance novels, but the fire in the bedsheets, the build up, that is what I enjoy - when two lovers finally come together and then **cue the music** Bow-Chika-Wow-Wow love happens. Again and again, the hero comes in and sweeps you off your feet. With winks, kisses, love bites, the never EVER gets old "you are MINE" claim. This book, has no passion, just drama.
When chapters and chapters were read and still no BAM Bam, I started to get nervous. I'm in the middle of this huge cliff hanger when I finally looked down at the Kindle and saw I was 97% finished. I cringed. I started to panic, then I read the last page and swear I squeezed my kindle so hard nail marks are on my case. I cursed it, threw it on the bed and yelled "nooooooo, whhhhyyyy, I hate you wicked scaredy cat" (that's the hero). A wimpy bully!
Why three stars...because "normally" after reading one of her books you finish it by throwing yourself on the bed, hand on heart sighing. But, this may be it for me....Sorry Carole.

Was a good read but short. I really didn't care too much for Jericho. Agree with other reviewer who said he was a jerk. All he did was lust after his ward - Jocelyn. And throughout the book kept thing why he dislikes "society" ladies. Lots of spy this and that but all in all it was just okay. I do enjoy Ms Mortimer's books because they are usually spicy. I have read others by her but not sure if I will read all of the regency sinners.
