The greatest gifts of all are love and hope. Elizabeth Mitchell is spending Christmas with her children and grandchildren, but the recent death of Elizabeth’s ailing husband and the absence of her son-in-law, missing in Afghanistan, hang like a shroud over the family gathering. I'm retired from the nine-to-five life and live with my husband and two cats on private land inside Daniel Boone National Forest in Kentucky. (The handsome dog with me in the picture went to the Great Dog Park in the Sky March 1, and we miss him a lot!)

I have loved fiction since before I could read (Mom said I made up stories based on the pictures in books). Now that I no longer have the excuse of not enough time, I'm fulfilling my lifelong dream of writing novels.

Over the years, I've paid the bills by being a dancer, a bartender, a police officer, a registered nurse and a technical writer. Now I'm drawing on that life experience and my two English degrees to create stories I enjoy writing and hope readers will enjoy reading.

My Top Shelf cozy mystery series is set in a small fictitious town on the Ohio River halfway between Indiana and the West Virginia border. There are currently six books in the series: The Body on the Barstool, Whiskey Kills, Name Your Poison, Double Shot, Bottoms Up, and On the Rocks. The Top Shelf series features Ricki Fontaine, a New Yorker who moves to small-town Ohio after inheriting a dive bar from her black sheep uncle.

I have two books, The Ghost Wears A Badge and Dead Men Don't Retire, in my Spirit of the Law cozy series. Dead End, the third book in the series, should be out late 2025.

I've also published a contemporary romance, The Boy Next Door, and a standalone romantic suspense novel, The Wrong Kind of Man. I have two books, Death Notice and Undercover in my Kisses and Killers Thriller series. My novella, The Gift, is a holiday romance with a hint of the paranormal.

I also write grittier mysteries and thrillers under the name Laurel Heidtman.

A touching story. A Christmas gift for grown-ups with a touch of the miraculous. It begins in a sad place as Carla fears her husband is dead in Afghanistan just after her father has passed away. She’s amazed and annoyed with her mother for telling her two kids a far-fetched story at Christmastime about wanting to commit suicide as a young woman. Her mother’s story plays out in surprising ways. This novella is a quick read, well written and uplifting.

It is Christmas and Carla decides that she hates her mother (Elizabeth). Father died around Thanksgiving and here Elizabeth was, looking happy. But despite a reference to "the Petri dish of emotions" this novella does not explore the feelings of the characters.

The story stays on more predictable grounds, of Elizabeth celebrating Christmas with her children Carla and Jake, and grandchildren Kayla (12) and Ethan (6). Their dad Kevin was in Afghanistan and had not checked in - via FaceTime - for weeks. Grandma's story turns out to be about the first man she ever loved, her first husband Carl, who wooed her over Cokes and, when he was drafted and sent to Vietnam, wrote to her every other day.

The author made the setting in the 1960s concrete with references to the Dodgers winning the World Series, the Beatles, and young men with long hair. Elizabeth tells the story of how she was caught in a 62 Ford Galaxy that skids off the road into the woods with snow up to the handle on the door. She is trapped for two or three days until she is rescued by Aaron. Both she and Aaron had visitations from a guardian angel.

The writing is clean, strong, and restrained. How does one feel about guardian angels? Well ... Kevin in Afghanistan calls in a day or two and there is general rejoicing. His story also involves an encounter with a short dude wearing camouflage from a different era. Some people really love this.

Do you believe in Guardian Angels? Elizabeth has a story to tell.

Christmas in Wisconsin. It's the most wonderful time of the year. But this year is different. Carla's father passed away before Thanksgiving, and her husband Kevin, is missing in Afghanistan. Carla is grateful that her mother Elizabeth, and brother Jake, are coming for Christmas to help her distract her children; together they might have a few moments of joy. Carla and Jake are shocked at the story their mother begins to tell them all. It's a story about their mother that they've never heard. As the story continues, Carla's hesitation about her mother's storytelling is quieted by their mother's insistence that it is a story of hope. They all just need to listen.

I had the same initial reaction as the character of Carla as Elizabeth began to tell her story—particularly with a 6-year-old grandson and a 12-year-old granddaughter listening. There is darkness and light in this holiday story. Darkness that is rarely talked about, especially by a grandmother, giving an example from her personal experience.

A heart-warming story which takes us through the bleak emotions of a military wife who is unsure about the fate of her beloved husband. Clara’s husband, Kevin, has been deployed to Afghanistan and is presently missing in action. Clara has also recently lost her father after he suffers a stroke. Though her mother seems to be handling the death of her spouse quite well, Clara is fighting depression and anxiety not knowing where Kevin is. Brought together for the Christmas celebration, Clara’s two children are not aware their father is missing and are caught up in the spirit of the season.
This turns into an emotional roller-coaster as Clara struggles to deal with revelations about her mother’s past which seem to parallel some of her present circumstances. Well-written engaging story and highly recommended!

When her husband goes missing in Afghanistan during the holidays, Carla feels no one can understand her pain. But then her mother begins to tell her and her two grandchildren about a great love she once felt for a soldier who also went missing, and about her story of survival during a heavy snow-storm. The story is short and tense, and would please anyone who believes in Christmas miracles (or even if you don't).

I loved the reminder that old people have a rich past behind them, and that they could relate much more than young people think they can.

“Christmas in July” was the line that drew me to this book, and I planned to leave it on my Kindle until Christmas. Instead, I found myself pulled into Carla’s world. A very ordinary world, with a husband and two children, except at the moment she’s operating as a single mother; Kevin is doing a tour of duty in Afghanistan, and he hasn’t been on FaceTime in two weeks. Mom, recently widowed, arrives for Christmas and starts telling the children a story Carla has never heard about her first husband called Carl. Was the father she’d loved her father?

Lolli Powell has been incredibly clever with Elizabeth, (Mom). Part of her story is told in the present, with Carla, her brother Jake, and the children’s reactions, and part as flashbacks.

Guess the twist in the tale if you can. I didn’t.

What a sweet story, and an absolutely perfect one for the holidays! When, while visiting her mother Elizabeth for Christmas, Carla hears about family history she never knew before, she goes through a whole range of emotions - denial, anger, and finally, acceptance. But it’s not just acceptance that comes to her after learning about Elizabeth’s near-death experience; Carla actually learns to see things in a new light and mentally prepares herself to apply her mother’s lesson to her own life as well. Without giving away any spoilers, let me just say, it was incredibly inspiring and touching. And the ending left me with a warm feeling in my heart - I really couldn’t have imagined a better one! A wonderful and heartwarming story just in time for the holidays. Five very well deserved stars!

Sometimes you read a story that turns out to be exactly what you needed at the time you needed it most. "The Gift" was certainly a present for me yesterday.

From the first page, when Carla is suddenly swept up in an emotion she least expected to feel in response to the sight of the person she'd least expect to cause it, I was swept up and knew I wouldn't be putting the book down until I was done.

I was wrong. By the end of the first chapter, I had to pause and get a box of Kleenex.

Reading this was like ripping the bandage off a wound and letting it bleed afresh. I mean this in the best possible way: a good bloodletting is a cathartic cleansing.

This story tapped a well of darkness I've been denying for some time now, and--wow!--do I feel better after letting those tears go. No doubt the well will re-fill. Life is that way. But for now, I am relieved.

Carla, the POV character, has been having a rough time. Following the recent death of her father, she's learned that her husband, a soldier, has gone missing in Afganistan.

It's Christmas Eve, and her now-widowed mother, Elizabeth, has come for the holiday, along with Carla's brother.

Elizabeth has chosen tonight, of all nights, to relate a tale from her past that she's never spoken of. It's a tale of love, loss and profound hope. But will Carla be able to endure the telling?

It has been a joy to read this story, and I highly recommend it.

It's been more than two weeks since Carla's husband Kevin checked in from his deployment in Afghanistan, and now she and her young children are straining to remain optimistic. It was only supposed to be an overnight patrol in the mountains. And with Christmas right around the corner, it's harder than ever for Carla to put on a brave face and hope for the best.

When her mother visits for the holiday, full of cheer and happy to be with family, things don't get easier. It's not like she doesn't know what's going on. Not only is her son-in-law missing in action, but her husband, Carla's father, passed away barely a month before after an extended period of declining health. Carla stares at her with a mix of shame, envy, anger, and a cocktail of other emotions.

Still, she does an okay keeping it together, but when her mother gathers her children around the Christmas tree and regales them with an unexpected story, things become almost unbearable. Grandma Elizabeth reveals that her recently departed husband was her second; that her first husband was killed in action during the Viet Nam war.

Carla has objections almost immediately, and I agree with them. For one, this isn't how she would have wanted to hear that her father may have actually been her stepfather, in front of her kids as she's already barely holding on to her everything-will-be-fine façade. But beyond that, it sounds almost like Grandma is trying to prepare her grandkids for a life without their father, complete with all the depression and suicidal thoughts that follow. It seemed at times almost comically inappropriate for a six-year-old boy to hear.

At a certain point, though, The Gift becomes a ghost story —or perhaps a guardian angel story— where Elizabeth's first husband Carl sometimes maybe, possibly, perhaps, shows up to guide her and her family to safety. What at first seems like a ghastly macabre tale turns out to be one of hope and faith and belief in the supernatural. Powell's prose is pristine, simple, and direct, providing a breezy read most readers will get through in a single session. It was sweeter than the sweetest Hallmark Christmas movie, so sweet that if I licked my Kindle I would have tasted sugar, but also honestly quite heartwarming. A good holiday read.

A Warm Message of Hope

“The Gift” of Lolli Powell has a very unexpected start, when the protagonist, Carla, suddenly experiences a burst of anger and fury targeted at her own mother, Elizabeth. And of all times – during Christmas! What could be the reason of this sudden feeling that she had never experienced before?

As it turns out, the feeling is connected to her father’s recent passing and her mother’s overly peaceful reaction to it. On top of all that, Carla is extremely concerned about the safety of her own husband, who was at the time fighting in Afghanistan. Instead of comforting Carla, Elizabeth chooses to talk about the loss of her first husband, which she had never mentioned to any of her family members, which forces even more stress on Carla (no spoilers about why!).

There are good reasons for why Carla’s mother behaves as she does. To explain her behavior, Elizabeth assembles the entire family – Carla and her brother as well as Carla’s children – for an unusual Christmas story that no one had ever heard before. What ensues is a family drama, which surprisingly connects the personal dramas of both the mother and the daughter in an elegant life circle.

I have personally enjoyed reading the novella, but I felt that there have been some slight imbalances between some of its main parts. For instance, I would have been interested more in the build-up of the relationship between Elizabeth and Carl. It felt like it went too quickly. Other parts, like Carla’s time in the car (trying to avoid spoilers here!) felt a bit too detailed. Also, while I enjoyed the jumps between the story itself and flashbacks, some of them could have been smoothers (e.g., between Chapters 15 and 16).

Nevertheless, despite some minor imbalances, The Gift ends up being a great story with a warm message of hope.

A well-written novella about hope--and the supernatural.

*Might contain spoilers--It's Christmas time and Carla is worried about her husband, Kevin, who is missing action in Afghanistan. Her brother, Jake, and mother, Elizabeth, arrive to celebrate(?) Christmas with Carla and her two children. While worrying about her husband, the author tells Elizabeth's own story (Carla's mother) of hope, despair, and miracles, which is meant to help her daughter through her tough time of uncertainly. The author does this through Elizabeth's dialogue and flashbacks.

The overall theme of the book is one of hope: things can get really bad, but there is always something good to hold on to. The story briefly tackles death, love, suicide attempts, ghosts, and relationships.

On the whole, I enjoyed the quick read, but I will admit, I didn't understand where Carla's anger at her mother (who had, herself, recently just lost someone she loved) came from. It seemed that Carla thought her pain for her missing husband far outweighed her mother's; it stopped me connecting to her as she seemed selfish. All the way through, there was an animosity simmering within Carla for her mother--even before the 'previous marriage' bombshell and telling her tale of wanting to end her life in front of the grand kids--which the author never really explained. If this had been clarified a little, personally, I would have connected to the characters more.

Wow. This truly is one of the best stories I’ve read in quite sometime. From the very beginning, The Gift captivated me and I couldn’t put it down until I finished it. I loved the way the author told the story of the mother and daughter from both perspectives by showing the reader the present in the daughter’s eyes and the past with flashbacks through the mother’s eyes. Both women are such compelling and realistic characters. The author’s descriptions of scenery and emotions made me feel like I was right there with these women, sharing their struggles. This is especially true with Elizabeth (the mother)’s point of view.

This book gave me chills and brought tears to my eyes in a single paragraph. I highly recommend this story to anyone who believes in the power of love and that miracles are possible.

Elizabeth is visiting her children and grandchildren for Christmas and she brings with her a special photo album. She has been taking care of her husband for the past two years and he passed away at Thanksgiving. Her daughter Carla was grieving the loss of her father and her husband was missing in Afghanistan. Her mother brought down the photo album and started telling a story Carla had never heard before. The story will take us to when Elizabeth was young and what happened to her. Her daughter Carla asks her not to finish the story but her mother asks her to trust her because it is a story she needs to hear. It is a story she needs to hear and it gives hope that miracles do happen. You will have to read the book to see what happens but some gifts come in unexpected ways.

Carla’s husband has gone missing in Afghanistan. Her father has recently died. Its Christmas time and is it any wonder that Carla is angry that her mother seems to be handling her father’s death too well. Then her mother begins to reminisce and tell of memories from long ago. Her mother’s story seems to mirror hers. But would hers have the happy ending as her mothers eventually did? You will have to read this well written and heart wrenching story to find out.

We have been given many gifts...

Another story at Christmas time to bring tears to your eyes. It was an awesome gift. A gift from a world that surpasses our understanding. A gift of love. A gift of healing. A gift of faith. A gift of life. A gift of light. A gift of survival. A gift of perseverance. Well, I could go on but know this, someone is always looking out for us and will reach out to us. All we have to do is be willing to listen and reach back.

The reader gets two moving love stories for the price of one in this complexly woven, well told short read. Powell’s is a Christmas story with paranormal elements presented from inside a military family. Believable characters, plenty of twists, and just enough threat. The author can certainly write, touching your heart while entertaining and surprising you. Highly recommended for lovers of Christmas stories, those in military families, and for admirers of close knit, affectionate family life.

Thought provoking. This story made me believe in my guardian angel. Have had things happen in my life where there was no real explanation, yet looking back on the situation, there was no other theory but that my guardian angel was by my side and remains there to this day.
