The city has become a warzone. Charlie and her companions must survive the gangs and corrupt government agents that are out to stake their claims on the nation’s riches. Should she try and flee to the countryside, with each neighborhood a potential trap and every house a threat? Or should she stay and fight the building tyranny? Dwindling food supplies and the daily risks of capture are taking its toll. Mistakes are fatal, and the exhaustion that comes with living under constant danger is wearing them down. Betrayal, pain and death are the norm. Who can they turn to when everyone is the enemy? Charlie’s world is about to change, and decisions that she and the other’s make will lead to life or condemn them to a quick and merciless death.

This series is just ok. It's a nice little companion to the Going Home series, but way more convoluted. There's just too much going on in these books. In the Going Home series, except for a few passages here and there to explain/connect things, everything is seen and told from Morgan's perspective. Here, every chapter is about something going on with someone else. There are way too many characters to keep track of, and way too much of a distance between their situations to keep track of them all. What do I mean by that? Charlie is the main character. The books are named after her. And, in this story, something like 6 chapters would go by before we'd get back to the events going on with her. By the time that finally happened, I'd read so much about new people, or way less important people, that it was like "Wait, what happened with Charlie? Oh yeah, I forgot cause it was so long ago..."
I also dislike the authors penchant for rape scenes. That's actually a flaw this entire series, the Going Home books included. Rape, or the intent to rape, are so prevalent in the books that I think the authors actually get off on writing about it. I get that, if the world were to "end" as it does in the books, we'd have roving bands of thugs looting and shooting, but would there really be that much rape going on? And this series even expands on it and includes rape/attempted rape of males as well. It's really distracting from the rest of the story because of how often it happens.
There were also a ton of grammatical errors in the book. Small things can be overlooked, like a random letter being caPitalized in the middle of a word, but other sentences were missing words that would have made things coherent, or would feature repetition of words that should not have been there. Basically, what I'm saying is, whoever proofreads these books before publication isn't very good at their job. It's not my job as the reader to have to decipher what word should have been used in a sentence for it to make sense, or go back and re-read a sentence multiple times to figure out what they were trying to say but didn't write out correctly.
Finally, the biggest "Gripe: get to the point. This is book 3 from Charlie's perspective and we are on book 9 from Morgan's side. That's 12 books and not a single one of them has gotten down to the root of what happened and why. Each book just builds and builds on the same premise: an EMP went off, things suck, people are trying to survive. But not once has anything even remotely resembling a "why" has happened. Why did the EMP happen? The DHS are clearly at fault for it, but why did they do it? What was their motive? We're basically at a new civil war at this point, between the remaining citizens and rogue branches of the armed forces versus the DHS and a certain "brown" President that has shadily been mentioned a few times but never actually addressed because the authors have this little fantasy in their heads of the brown man bringing about the end of the world yet they don't have the balls to mention him by name, but not once has there been a "this is what happened and why" moment. This series has gotten deeper than the Going Home series has, showing that this was planned well before the EMP happened and that the DHS is even committing genocide, but again no "why" is given. Instead we're treated to what is essentially the exact same thing going on with Morgan: the world as we know it has ended, things suck, and some people know how to survive it all with some knowledge about what to do and a whole lot of luck.
Walt Browning said at the end of this book that he has started work on Charlie book 4 and that it will officially connect this series to the Going Home series, but I'm willing to bet that even with the two worlds colliding, we still won't get any answers. And also: what happens once the worlds collide? Do we continue to get separate books? Or will we get a Going Home/Charlie's Requiem shared story where "every chapter is from Morgan then Charlie's perspective so we'll bounce back and forth through the entire book" type of thing?
I'll keep reading them because after 12 combined books, I'm clearly invested in the story, and I want a conclusion. But man...get to the point already.
WALK BROWNING & A. AMERICAN HAVE ONE GREAT READ HERE AND ONE SERIES I'M HOPING THAT OTHERS PASS ON.
Charlie, Janice, Garrett make it back to Jorge & his girlfriend Marie, bringing Beker into the mix, but after seeing the night they had they now want to make it Dr. Kramer' s farm, as they find nowhere is safe, they've seen way to much and feel the need to let others know what it seems is really happening to their Country. John, Mike & Beth Ann were police and prior military service and they are soon put back into action with DHS, hoping now they can get their country straightened out, but they learn and see soon enough it will be straightened out, but only for the select few. They also realize it's something they're not going to participate in. As do others around the Country, some of these who realize this are small groups trying to find bigger groups to join for safety until something can be done. Then there are the large groups, whole Military Companies, with good leaders like Colonel Cooper of the 278th Tennessee Army National Guard, which realizes something is definitely not right, so decides to take his men and their familiies to a safe place, without even realizing that they have a traitor in their midst, reporting everything he hears to individual's that will let nothing get in their way of a new America. The safe place has many more troops and the Colonel has already sent ahead their own troops, to the Military Base where they can possibly regroup, let others know of what is going on and get their country back, as the Colonel is bring the last group a couple hours later. The dependents of the advance group, he leading and with that group is the grandson he cherishes above anything else, and his pregnant daughter in law, who is due soon enough with a baby girl. But before any of that can happen, the United States does something, no one ever comprehends could happen, with the ones called out to do it, believing they're helping their country by going after the terrorists that have invaded their country to do them harm. Also on DHS's radar is now ex-DHS employees, John, Beth and Big Mike, who meet up with another Cynthia, a 20myear Marine Corps Veteran and someone that ran her own security company. With these 4 together, working to meet up with others, like Charlie, Janice and even the Colonel his troops and everyone else that want their country back, they know it will be a long dangerous road. But with everything DIS and the powers that be are doing to their country, the one they love there can be no other option. This series is a must read, as we see not only the bad people with authority can do, but we see the good people can do and will do to preserve the country, to make American free again, regardless of whom they have to go up against. Walt Browning & A. American have one great read here and I'm truly hoping that everyone that can, gives this series a one good read and let's others know not to miss this also. This series ROCKS!!!!!
Charlie’s story continues as she and her newfound friends try to escape the chaos in the Orlando area. Danger is all around with the government attempting to herd everyone into FEMA camps using liberated lawless gangs to force compliance. The members of her group are now armed and have enough supplies to see them through a significant portion of their journey. The group is splintered as to where they should go and have agreed to part ways.
Browning’s and American’s third book in the Charlie’s Requiem series, Resistance, spends very little time on Charlie’s story. Instead, it covers the broader picture behind the scenes happenings with the government as well as introducing several new players into the puzzle. It takes a while but they pull all the pieces together.
There are almost too many factions to keep up with beyond Charlie and her group. And, the story is riddled with typos. The backstory is so involved and told in so much detail that I lost track of Charlie. It was good to know what is going on regionally but would have been better to have it interspersed throughout Charlie’s story. You could not have told she was the protagonist if her part hadn’t been told in the first person.
There’s a lot more to be told. Let’s hope they concentrate on Charlie’s story more in the next installment.
I read through books 1 and 2 pretty quickly. In fact, I read book one in just about a single sitting. They were intriguing, things happened quickly, and the story progressed quickly. Half-way through this book I started struggling. The bad guys kept winning. The good guys kept losing. Charlie is the main character, the book is even named after her, yet she takes a back seat to the dozen other characters who keep popping up you have to try to keep track of. Things progress very slowly, and usually towards a darker path than we were previously on. I just had a hard time picking it back up. I finally forced myself to finish it, and the book ends on another dark and depressing note. Look, I get it. It's apocalyptic evil government war genre, so it kinda makes sense it's dark, to an extent. Give us some light at the end of the tunnel though. As a reader we want to see the good guys have the occasional win too. I'm not sure at this point I'm going to read another one.
The Government is the villain for sure. No conspiracy theory, instead proof of their guilt.
Charlie - a pharmaceutical representative, John - a cop, Dr. Kramer - a renowned cardiologist, all are trying to survive in the aftereffects of an EMP. Orlando is filled with DHS goons running a 'recovery effort' that helped themselves and nobody else.
A close look at a government gone wild in this dystopian future series. The characters are crisp and clean with sharp angles. No fuzzy characters that leave you wondering, just good solid folk from the heart of the nation drawn to Orlando and the parks. The action is frequent, authentic and loud. The premise and storyline are plausible and terrifying. Altogether, this is a series not to miss! Getcha some!
The book just ended. Does it mean another? Or does life just go one fighting? Martial law scares the dodo out of me.
A few mistakes. #1 no one has ever ice skated on Watts Bar Lake. It doesn't get cold enough to freeze more than an inch. #2 After 9/11 no one can get I side the gates without proper identification. There is an armed guard. There are numerous other deterrents to keep unwelcome guests. #3 Where Watts Bar is in a valley and surrounded by mountains, we are 'told' that we are in a safe area 10 miles away. Hmmm
Such an amazing series! This series is so we'll written with amazing characters that you cheer for, scream at and want to know more about. An AMP has struck the US follow along on journey of terror and suspense as the characters discover the realities of this new world and what they will do to Save themselves and the country from DHS
I was a bit frustrated with the first book because it left so much unresolved but I had all three so I read the second then the third. I couldn’t put them down. Frightening and riveting these books were really well written. Definitely worth the time. As someone who’s always been interested in survival it even taught me a thing or two.
I liked the first two books well enough but this one had more issues. There were quite a lot of grammatical errors. I’m not sure anyone edited this. Also, this is Charlie’s Requiem but the character was barely in this book. I think the writers forgot about her. In my opinion, the writers are trying to focus on too many characters.
This is a 4 book series. I read A. American’s Going Home series. It was very good from start to finish. I finished the first 2 books in this series hoping it would turn the corner or pick up. I got half way thru book 3 and quit. There were to many stories going on at the same time and new characters being added. This is just not what I like to read.
Great books and series have read all from both authors
I read a lot of this genre and this is one of the best! Things could really unfold in this manner quickly! Hurry up with the next book! love the characters and how you tied them together!
Still hard for me to suspend disbelief about the willingness of DHS to rebuild U.S. But OK. I wonder what our enemies would do if the watchdog of the world was brought to its knees from within?
I had trouble keeping up with all the different groups of characters at first but it slowly came together again for me. I was excited for this book after the ending of book 2 and have that same feeling for what's next.
I love this series for the information, you guys do all of the the thinking so that we can just enjoy the story and charactors. I'm starting to to get a feel for them.
This book was a bit better than #2. It still feels like the action is distributed in a lot of completely different locations, but there is some effort to get a lot of these characters together. Please get an editor. It would help make the story a lot better to read.
Ok, not paratroopers, but some Troops doing the right thing. This series may end up being prophetic, given the current abomination warning against such a "outside attack."
Fun but complicated read keeping the timeline and character groups straight. The effectiveness of DHS in the story exceeds any of the actual competence of a bureaucracy...
I have really enjoyed the series so far waiting in the next installment. Good characters and great story a must read for any fan of post apocalyptic genre
