As a prepper, Grayson Rowan was prepared for almost anything; anything other than being totally alone when the sh*t hits the fan.
While he sat back and watched the United States rattle swords with Korea, play chicken with Russia, and strong-arm China, he felt sure if the lights went out, that he and his family would be ready and safe--whether it was due to a natural disaster or a man-made event. They had everything they needed at their homestead.
What he wasn't prepared for, was his family not being home if it ever happened.
Olivia Rowan is with her sisters, Gabby and Emma, on a girls-only trip to Myrtle Beach. When chaos erupts and there's no gas, their journey home is a nightmare, filled with predators and danger--and apparently, Olivia hadn't learned a thing her husband tried to teach her.
When your neighbors run out of food and water, and turn on each other, what will you do?
Jake, a country boy mechanic, never believed in TEOTWAWKI, but he'd heard his brother-in-law preach about it many times. He knew what to do; but he didn't prepare. He lazily left it all up to Grayson--he was the prepper after all. When catastrophe strikes, will he continue to keep his head stuck in the sand while his clueless neighbors destroy each other, and his wife is stuck out on the road; or will he stand up and fight like a man?
And if you're alone? Bug in or Bug out?
Graysie Rowan, a freshman at University, just wants to go home. When no word comes from the government, and the state capital is overrun with looters, chaos and mayhem, the college administration puts the students on lock-down. But her dad, Grayson, had prepared her for this. Now, if she can only remember what it was he said to do...
If they want to survive this post-apocalyptic event, they'll all have to learn to fight like a man.
The end came not with boots on the ground, nuclear weapons or an EMP. It snuck in with a quiet clatter at the back door and flipped the switch, covering the states in darkness and sending this family on three divergent paths that ultimately lead home. When they collide in this surreal and gripping family drama, it won't be without bullets and bloodshed.
The premise of the book was interesting but the execution was off. The characters were all fairly one-dimensional and had to be about the worst preppers on the planet. Olivia was hopeless and the women in general pretty weak. There was a lot of mention of Trump, both good and bad, and while I dislike the man, I felt like using the specific person to blame and extol did not add to the story at all. Just empty politics. This book also started with a scene several months passed the start of the event, but you never get back to that point. And "Fight Like a Man"? Really ? My problem is that it ended with a big cliffhanger and a couple of unanswered questions so I have to decide if I want to go on to book 2 to find out.
The women were tstl the men were pansies. I didn't like how the author talked about President Trump throughout the book. He made it sound like at some points like it was to be expected because P.T. caused it.. and at other times he talked about what great guy he is because he is going to make America GREAT again. I just felt like it didn't need to be in the book, mentioning a president is one thing, but to put a present name to him was not a great move IMHO.
I'm fairly certain the obese orange one in the White House paid to have his name mentioned as much as it was in this book. I barely got through it, with all the bs MAGA rhetoric on every page. This wasn't prepper fiction, this was the author cramming their political views down the readers throat. I hope they wiped the spray tan off their lips, I could see the orange glistening from here. Please, don't waste your time with this one.
This is an engaging, character intensive post-apocalyptic story; I enjoyed the characters and the premise. My Rating 4.25.
Grayson, a firm prepper, is the ‘patriarch’ of his family and has prepared the family farm so everyone will be taken care of. Although the rest of the family have agreed to prep and the rendezvous plans, they don’t take the threats as seriously as Grayson does. They are all startled … and unfortunately separated… when the grid goes down. Grayson is home alone since his wife and sisters-in-law are 200+ miles away for a girl’s weekend at the beach. His daughter is an hour away at college.
Jake, one of the brothers-in-law, a mechanic, has been experiencing some funky mood that he’s been trying to hide from everyone. He hasn’t had much motivation and it takes him a little time to accept that a SHTF event has occurred. He still doesn’t take the steps he knows need to be done and drags his feet getting on the road to the family farm. Plus he remembers that he got lax on some of the tasks he was supposed to take care of. When he finally gets ready to go he runs into one problem after another.
Grayson’s wife, Olivia, is enjoying the beach with sisters Gabby and Emma. Olivia loves her husband but never really bought into the prepper mode. As the beach resort descends into chaos, Olivia plays ostrich and hides her head in a book on the beach. Gabby is ready to move out and try to get home but is rightfully upset when she discovers she is the only one with her bug out bag. The girls are extremely vulnerable as they try to find a ride home and begin to run into some dregs of society.
Graysie is a freshman at college who is stuck with her clueless roommates. University authorities have told the students to stay put. But after several days, as conditions deteriorate, Graysie decides she is going to get past the security guard to her car and head home.
Everyone may have to "fight like a man" as Grayson has tried to teach them. The story follows all four threads with the fears and dangers the characters face as technology, normalcy and society break down around them. The characters evoked various emotions: curiosity, annoyance, anger, dread, fear, and relief. There are some political statements which didn't bother me but sadly there is unnecessary bad language. There are a few alarming scenes that are consistent with an EOTW scenario. I liked the prepper information, including what could go wrong with the best of plans. I am interested in continuing the series.
Audio Notes: Kevin Pierce has become a reliable sci fi narrator. He doesn’t always provide completely unique voices but he still manages to convey the distinct personalities. The narration enhanced my enjoyment of the story and I hope to continue listening to the series on Audible. #RRSciFiMonth.
Many female post-apocalyptic authors describe stuff in great detail. That's fine, I like to read about the prepper lifestyle and how the end of the world came to be. But blaming Trump or any real historical figure about it isn't cool in my opinion. I know the dangers of today's world and many of those could cause Armageddon single-handedly.
Also, the characters- I couldn't find a surface to attach to. I can't pinpoint exactly why. There's nothing wrong with the writing, it's excellent.
I read the book and enjoyed some of it. If you like a deeper cause-effect ratio and want your characters with a solid backstory, this book is right up your lane.
I however value action, a plot that moves fast and a tough grip. Reading this book and some others like SHTF, helped me understand that my preferences lean toward military scifi.
SHTF is a good post-apocalyptic story but I doubt I'll read another book from this series.
However, I'm delighted to find how diverse the sub-category of post-apocalyptic is. It accommodates so many different takes on the familiar tropes of falling governments, survival, and violence.
What happens when the lights go out across the USA?
This is a pre- "post- apocalypse" about how it started and how even the "preppers" where not prepared for it and stayed in denial that it really was happening. It's a fast paced story & the start of a series.
Our protagonist Grayson Rowan spent the last several years preparing for an event that he hoped would never come to pass. Grayson is a prepper, and he diligently taught his family to be prepared for the unexpected. He taught them several survival skills such as gardening, canning, camping, and the use & maintenance of firearms. As is the norm where Kilroy is concerned the EMP event struck while the wife was on a vacation get-away with her sisters and the daughter was away at college. The story transitions through several individuals or groups of survivors detailing their travels and the hardships they encounter during the crisis. The characters are well-defined and likable. There is a follow-up novel, Shoot Like a Girl, but it is not available on Audible at this time. This audiobook was given by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review via Audiobook Boom.
Grayson Rowan has tried his best to prepare himself and his extended family for almost any disaster situation. While he is home alone the SHTF when the grid goes down. His wife & her sisters are on a girls’ vacation. His daughter is away at college, and his brothers-in-law are scattered as well. The biggest questions are do they remember their training and will they all make it back to Grayson’s?
Akers first novel in The SHTF Series, Fight Like a Man: A Post-Apocalyptic Thriller, follows the journey the family member must make to try and get home while Grayson puts their survival plan into action at the homestead. Each path contains its own set of obstacles, some requiring life or death struggles. No one is spared the harsh reality of this new world with its new rules and the worst of mankind.
The depth of character development and variety is amazing. Some are so real you want to slap some sense into them. The trials and tribulation are such that your heart aches along with them. There is nonstop action making it a fast read. It is not a standalone book as there is a cliffhanger ending.
I truly enjoyed this book and look forward the rest of the series.
I gave this 3 stars because, even though I enjoyed all the tidbits of prepped info., I couldn’t stand the story line and characters. I found the story to be a little too predictable and obvious and the characters to be undeveloped and weak. I also found the use of Trump in the book to be a huge put off. I’m neither for, nor against him and could careless for American politics, However adding him to this book was a total waste. Perhaps the author should have had it proof read better.
I have read dozens of recent books in this genre, and this is one of the best. The author does a terrific job with character development, and the writing is top notch. I downloaded it on my Kindle before a recent trip and read it before the first day was over. Highly recommend it for anyone interested in books of this type.
Enjoyed reading. Not a lot of fast action, but still enjoyable. Will read next book in series when available. More of introduction to characters. Storyline very current.
Fight like a man that's what Grayson told his daughters. It's a good thing too because the men in this story are weak! Grayson spends all his time worrying about his wife and daughters as they make their way to the compound which was prepped in case of an EMP. Meaning they shouldn't be stupid about how things would go down, right?
But here you have a family of 'preppers' who, when SHTF, end up running around like a bunch of chickens with their heads cut off and that they never had a notion of being prepared in case of a worldwide catastrophe. OK in fairness, who knows how they will really react in a crisis situation until they are faced with a crisis situation, but still....there doesn't seem to be a lot common sense around, and that is was annoying to me.
One daughter can't read a compass, or the directions written out for her on next steps in case TSHTF, or apparently a map--so much for higher education.
Our "hero"...using that term loosely... can't seem to figure out that Puck is mentally challenged and even though he thinks that Puck is some kind of pervert, he doesn't go check on "Jenny"?!? Whoever Jenny is because we never find out, not in this book anyway.
Then we have Olivia...seriously? No power, no running water, no cell service and you're sitting on beach reading a magazine and catching some rays like everything is fine. What?!
There are a couple redeeming characters but not enough to drive this story.
Additionally, I did not like that the author felt it necessary to write about President Trump.. Like him or not... I don't care! Keep politics out of the fiction writing or at least give a disclaimer.
Lastly, no warning that this was a series. The story abruptly ended when most everyone finally meets up and start some ridiculously long and loud celebrating...it's only been a few days FFS not years since they last saw each other... Gracie the idiot college student, finally managed to shout out that she shot someone.
As I said this is apparently a series and the book leaves us with is Puck with a gunshot wound alive or dead and who or what is Jenny?! Meh, don't think I care to find out.
I won't be reading any more in this series as there are tons of better books that are post apocalyptic /EMP out there.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Warning: If you are an SJW or snowflake, this is not the book for you.
Another enjoyable apocalyptic novel focusing on the 'what-if' scenarios surrounding EMPs. I swear I'm obsessed with these things. This was almost a four-star read for me, but I absolutely loathed Olivia's character to the point that it actually sucked away some/much of my enjoyment of the novel. In real life I would hope that a rational and levelheaded man such as Grayson would never choose to marry such a self-involved, prideful dingbat. It was clear that Olivia's sole purpose in the novel was to sabotage all of the efforts of the reasonable characters in the story in order to heighten the stakes. I'm not sure if I'm okay with a storyline that relies on the stupidity of one character in order to move the plot forward.
There were also several times a chapter ended on some kind of teaser, alluding to something that was soon to come, but the event alluded to never happened. Some grammar issues throughout the book too, though those didn't really bother me (just worth noting).
The final thing--and this is through no fault of the author--I'm tired of EMP books where the MC either lives on a farm or has access to one. Can someone out there please write a post-apocalyptic book for people like me who live on only half an acre (or less) of land? That would be so relatable and amazing.
The book was good enough for me to download the second one, ao at the minimum L.L. Akers knows how to write a story that will keep his readers coming back for more. I appreciate his no-nonsense approach to the subject matter, along with the MC's love/hate relationship with Trump and his ability to separate personality from policy/productivity.
America is in chaos. A lot of people are sure what happened or why.POTUS (goes by a different name but the author clearly references to Trump) has been silent. There is no communication what so ever. Actually, all forms of communication are non existent. There has been an attack on America but no one knows who or why. Major cities are in shambles. Any type of law enforcement is non existent. No Army, no national guard. Survival of the fittest, strongest. Actually preppers or rural folks who know how to live off the land. The primary characters in this book are a close knit family all trying to return to there family location. A safe house, where they have stocked supplies to survive. A realistic story of survival and determination. An excellent read!!!Enjoyed immensely!!
I have read every book that L.L. Akers has ever written and published, and SHTF, is just as amazing. I absolutely love the people in her books but it was hard to read what each of them have had to ensure in this book and I'm chomping at the bit to read the next book. I'm sorry Mei was in such pain but so thankful Gabby, Olivia & Emma met such a wonderful man and woman to help them and I'm not sure,or pretty sure, I could do what Graysie did to get home. To know that what happened to them is truly what could happen, to all of us. Lisa, thank you for another awesome book. Hurry with the next book. June Saltiel
WARNING! This story is unfinished. It begins with a prologue that's 3 months past "the event" then chapter 1 flashes back to the day after the event, yet the story never brings the reader to the scene described in the prologue. Instead, it ends quite abruptly with much left hanging. I can't evaluate or rate an unfinished story. The story is a bit too politically preachy and rather formulaic, but it has potential.
Kevin Pierce delivers his customary superb performance. I hope I have the opportunity to hear the rest of the story and give it a proper evaluation.
NOTE: I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
This author has potential. She tells a good story. The series has been good thus far, however, the books require some serious editing. So I give it only 3 star
Fight Like a Man written by L.L. Akers is book one of the SHTF series of books. When a family of “Preppers” are forced to put into practice what they have been preparing for, the end of life as they know it and how well did all the preparation that they did, actually work?
I absolutely loved this book, it was well written, gritty and took me to a place I had never considered ever being. The difference between this book and other of post-apocalyptic books that I have read is that it took me to the very beginning of an event, and lead me through the difficulties, the thoughts, the denial that “this is it, the event that we have been training for”, the difference between thinking you are prepared and the reality of just how committed were you in believing an event might happen and being able to deal with what is happening.
Fight like a man tells the story of a close knit family led by the eldest Grayson who taught each member to fire a weapon, how to collect water, ensured they had petrol for vehicles stored, food canned and preserved, to always carry …….. and so it goes on. Now the reality is Olivia his wife was pretty much not committed to the cause, she was not a fan of guns, and was pretty much clueless about what to do when the Shit Hits The Fan.
There was no power, no internet and no phones. It doesn’t really get any worse than this. This family are separated, Grayson’s wife and his two sisters in law are on vacation at the beach 2 hours drive away, his daughter is at college an hours drive away, and she has to find her way home, which was the first rule …. Get Home! Grayson is at the home farm all alone with no way of knowing where his family are and how they were getting home. His brother and brother-in-law he had no idea why they have not made it back to the home farm.
LL Ackers drew me into this world which was lowered into a state of chaos in a very short period of time, with no power there was no fuel pumps, no money, no refrigeration, … no sanitation …. Well this author took me through this world as it deteriorated into a world I would not want to live in. The author had a writing style that was gritty and held my attention, I couldn’t wait to turn the page to find out what was going to happen next.
The one criticism I have was the use of Trump in this book, I am not an American citizen and using real people, particularly politicians in this fictitious book I found difficult and unsettling. If you want to use politicians, then create a fictitious character to fill that role.
I am looking forward to following this book up with the second in the series Shoot Like A Girl.
I was gifted a copy of this book by the author via Voracious Reader Only.
Gracen has prepped over the years and thinks he has everything ready to go when the SHTF. The only thing he didn't count on is that no one would be with him when it happened. The wives are on a girls' trip to the Florida coast, his daughter is at college, his brothers are in town. They all have their bug out bags and should make it home in no time if they leave as soon as they realize this is real. He's trained them all, right? He just has to get everything going and wait for them at the homestead.
There are some real moments in this listen. There are also some really great tips for someone who isn't into prepping and doesn't know what to do when things go bad. The list of items in the bug out bags was something I haven't seen before and would be extremely helpful, filling up all available containers and draining your pipes is another. Cooking everything in your refrigerator and freezer, having a compass, and a small water filtration device. Turning all electical appliances to off or unplugging them. All of these things are common sense but no one thinks of them. They just wait for the lights to come back on.
I liked how the women in this story were as prepared as the men (except Olivia who was irritating beyond belief) and sometimes more so. For a hardcore prepper, I would have thought Gracen would have a CB setup to communicate with his family. That was a little disappointing but forgiveable. I would also have thought he would have checked that his reluctant prepper wife had brought the bug out bags he had carefully prepared for all the wives. I was also disappointed that it took sooooo long for everyone to realize this was real and get moving towards the homestead. Denial is not an attractive trait in a prepper.
Having said all that, the story was plotted well and flowed between the different characters and their situations well. My only true disappointment was that the ending did not wrap up the story very well and seemed rushed, with not all story lines concluded in a satisfactory way. Would I read a second book? Most definitely. But when you're writing a series the ending of each book should resolve the current section of the story.
The narration by Kevin Pierce was fantastic, as always. His voice is tailor made for this genre. He doesn't try for the female voices and yet weaves the tale in a way that you know who each character is each time they speak. His voice in general is so sublime that I could listen to it for days on end. And do every chance I get. He is one of my favorite narrators and has not disappointed me yet.
Fun! And totally annoying ... (characters, political...)
Fun, fast read within the genre.
The storyline is nothing new, but keeps moving. Character driven story.
The characters. Well. What makes the book manageable is the high level of likability of some of the characters. Main, secondary, and just passing through. Because the unlikable, annoying characteristics of a few others are just so grating - back in the day of printed books they’d have caused me to pitch my copy across the room on the regular. Just because I’m not “there” and can’t slap them! lol Relating to this is a married pair in particular. Uhhhh? This intelligent, capable, no B.S. man would never marry a self-centered, clueless, twit. First date he’d be dropping her off right back at her front door before they reached their intended destination. Thank you, but no thank you. Thus, you may have to grit your teeth through some irritation.
The political nature of this “story” is all too clear - it’s pushing an agenda. And only one agenda. And only one name from current events has been changed. Trump to “Trixler.” This is CLEARLY the camp the author has a cemented tent set up in. Absolutely no question or grey area there.
So, my being a firm anti-Trumper since ... always, I’ve had to do a lot of deep breathing, using this as a chance to learn more about other’s viewpoints, and taking heart that Biden won. ;) But the MAGA clothing is everywhere, “everyone” smart or is “good guy” voted “Trixler,” and Hillary bashing is at 2016 campaign levels.
Really, quite a shame for a good book that could be much better, just as effective, without the prejudice, negativity, and promotion of divisiveness. Our country/world, has enough problems (deadly pandemic for one ....), and reading fiction is an escape from all that, or at best - helps to move us to a more positive place or peace of mind. Let the story be the story, allow the characters to be themselves of course, shave out 75% of the over the top politics, and you’d be left with a good book. Not a one sided civics text.
I am going on to read the next book. And, fingers crossed, the rest of the series. The overall storyline is that entertaining; the characters that interesting. I can deal with the rest (so far) to get the good stuff. It’s like the old adage goes: take what you need and leave the rest.
So ....I enjoyed this book. Not nearly as good as The McCane Apocalypse, but better than many in this genre.
That being said, I only gave it 3 stars for the following reasons. I hated Olivia's character (anyone that dumb shouldnt survive the apocalypse!), there was a bit too much info on certain aspects of prepping- but that was easy enough to skim, and these characters had to be the worst example of preppers ever! Hopefully, they'll get their act together in book 2.
What almost made me give up on the book was all the pro Trump writing! WAY too much about Trump. Though the author expressed some misgivings about Trump, she/he mentioned several times how, despite some flaws, Trump is "getting it done." I CAN'T STAND Trump and all the pro Trump sh** REALLY annoyed me. (Though I do find it interesting to read why anyone would vote for such a narcissistic, racist, compulsive liar! I'm reading the book in late August 2019, and would love to know if the author still feels the same way! Trump is on the verge of starting a war with China and the US is on the verge of a recession. I'm a Canadian, so I dont really get why people would EVER choose Trump over Hillary. What could she have possibly have done to make him the better choice??? All I know is that if Hillary were president, she would have behaved like a president, the president of the united states wouldnt be viewed as a joke by the rest of the world, and I would not be afraid that the world could go to hell at any time because of the president!)
My political views aside, it wasnt a smart move by the author to include so much pro trump writing because you are going to annoy at least half of the readers. Better to make up a president who is an idiot and would lead the country into a total meltdown. ( Sorry. Couldn't resist! Lol)
Lastly, you should realize the book ends in a cliff hanger. Also it begins three months after the event but ends a couple weeks after the event.
Not your average EOTWAWKI. Scarily realistic! First off I have to say that I received a free copy of this book as part of a promotion. I am leaving this review entirely voluntarily. I have read / listened to many post-apocalyptic books, and it's not often I listen to a book in pretty much one straight session. But I couldn't stop with this book, I couldn't "put it down" as I would say if I had read it. I just had to know what was going to happen to each of the characters next. I was initially struck by the details regarding "prepping", which is ongoing throughout the book. I really enjoyed this, and was interested by some of the solutions, which I would never have thought of. The characters in the book are very interesting, and diverse. They are well written and each character is developing nicely and I can't wait to get to know them better in book 2, Shoot Like A Girl. I will say that I don't really enjoy it when a chapter ends with sentences like "if only they knew what they were coming up against next" and other such leading statements. Of course something else is going to happen, otherwise it would be the end of the book. But that's only my personal opinion and its really a small niggle in an otherwise very enjoyable story. My only other bugbear is the mention of a particular president, its almost like the author wanted us to know his views, so he put those into one of the main characters. Neither of these are important enough to deduct a star, given the outstanding quality of the book overall. I'm going to get stuck into book 2 next, I really hope it will continue in the same vein as this first book and offer me a great listen. OH! One last thing - the narrator is EXCELLENT it almost feels like he's been with the characters and taken notes on each of them. Every character is distinguishable in their dialogue, and he sets the scenes and atmosphere perfectly.
I don't like giving low ratings. Especially to independent authors. This just wasn't that good. How could that be? I mean a post disaster novel called "Fight Like a Man" "S*** Hits The Fan"? Who could have seen that coming? So, if you would read the book based on the title you might not think it is that bad. Mechanically it is well edited. I didn't see glaring English errors. The plot moved forward. The good guys and bad guys were just cardboard characters. ... Very thin cardboard.
It followed four sets of characters. That was too much. As a result it didn't feel satisfing for any of them. And I could really only tolerate the daughter away at college.
It was weird that it talked about the Presidential election (of 2016) and referenced Hillary and all the other political leaders ... Except Trump ... for Trump he used .... What was it Trixler? Trickster? And I don't think he was trying to be negative on Trump. Most of the characters supported "Tricksler". Except for him getting the USA attacked and all? It just seemed silly to use Hillary but not Trump.
One positive thing. I did like a couple of "survival tips" like a knife at a 45 degree angle into several types of trees and a flat stick to drip out the water would yield about a glass of water.
I like survivalist, post apocalyptic stories and you usually have to tolerate poor writing to get more of them .... but I prefer poor grammar to poor characters and story.
I liked this book. The author has a style that engages and the dialogue is good. The characters are really interesting, especially the twin women who are so opposite to one another. This is a tale of family, the importance of our loved ones, and what we will do in an apocalypse to protect them and those we consider our friends. It brings up many personal questions. Would you share food if your neighbours were starving? How about if their baby needed formula to keep from starving to death? Would you share your home? Would you shoot someone to protect friends and family? These questions ideas really made me ponder what I personally would do in an apocalypse. A book that is entertaining, as well as making me think about things deeply is really good in my opinion. I do think the editor needs to go over some of the grammatical errors. There were many verb tense errors that were driving me mad, and these errors were not dialectal syntactical errors! I kept noting them in hopes someone (as in the editor of this series) would contact me for the corrections. Other than that, I would have given this five stars, but now it is a four-star book. Still very exciting; very good! I have bought the second book of the series and can't wait to start.
I’m fairly new to the prepper ideology, and to the Post-Apocalypcalipic novel genre. Akers has created a very realistic scenario, showing how many will react to a catastrophe of this nature. While some will say that society wouldn’t break down this quickly, may I point out the aftermath of Katrina? Stores looted, murders right and left, and on the other hand extreme bravery. The poignancy of a teen who rescued multiple children under the age of 5, many he didn’t even know, and staying with them at the shelter until the parents could be located. Disasters bring out the very best, and the very worse, in people. One man, Grayson, is a prepper who is ready for many contingencies, except that his family would be scattered when the grid falls due to a cyber attack. Against the odds his family manages to find their way home, and the struggle to survive in this brave new world begins. A great read, enthralling and informative.
Overall, this was an enjoyable series. The story follows a large cast, with various sub stories taking place, and as it is with any large cast, there is a wide array of different characters and although sometimes confusing, it also keeps the pace running. There are many multifaceted characters, some not that likeable, which makes for a somewhat realistic story. I liked that there were so many people with different views and opinions, even when some were irritating. However, I was somewhat surprised at the subtle, negative undertone towards women from a female author and although I wasn't particularly in love with any of the characters, in general, I enjoyed the story.
Triggers regarding the whole series: substance abuse, violence against women and dogs.
Book two is out but not on audio.... I may have to go ahead & get it & devote some time to sitting down & reading. This was a great book. I’m convinced Pucks friend Julie is a horse, could be a goat but I guess I’ll have to wait to see. I hope he will be ok.... Lots of action & I’m sure there will be much more to come. Excellent starter book for anyone interested in this genre or in prepping. As usual Kevin Pierce does an excellent job of narration. I have to listen to something by him after every few books as I need to get my Kevin fix. Best narrator ever!
I received a complimentary copy of this audiobook from the publisher/author but voluntarily give my honest review.
I would have rated this higher because I like the storyline for the most part, but the author should learn the difference between conscience and conscious. Conscience is your inner voice telling you to do the right thing. Conscious is being awake or aware. Please correct your errors. Also then and than. Then is next, than is instead of. I like the prepper info and you portray your characters fairly well except for Olivia. She flounders between a being a ditzy flake or having a conscience about helping others with domestic violence and helpless or strong in a crisis. She ends up being irritating. Overall, it's a good effort and worth the read.
