A collection of prose short stories that expand the beloved world and characters from The Ancient Magus’ Bride by Kore Yamazaki. Featuring work by prominent Japanese authors.
The short review...
When I heard about this light novel I was really intrigued! Would it be a novelization of Elias and Chise's story or would it be a spin-off? Would it be a story that happened off screen in the manga? I never would have thought it would be an anthology! The Ancient Magus’ Bride is a world that I absolutely adore.... but do I adore it because of Elias and Chise and what a unique couple they are or do I adore the elements of the world?! Well reading these stories I can say that I'm pretty interested in all sorts of aspects of the world!!
It was super fun to learn more about character I know and love like Hazel and Silky. It was neat to learn about other special characters in the world like with the Pyrite Knight and Iron Rust. And it was quite spooky and heart wrenching to learn about those on the fringe of the world who are trying to survive. There is this great range of stories in the volume and while you may not go gaga for them all they are each one unique and entertaining.
Cover & Title grade -> A+
For some reason this cover suits an anthology devoted to expanding the world of The Ancient Magus’ Bride... probably because the tree is representative of the rings of growth of a living being... so to have a tree graphic represent the golden yarn through this world is just so spot on. Also with in the world the tree grew from a dragon and his memories... I feel like these short stories are snapshots of memories of beings who all belong to this world.
The Golden Yarn stories took on all aspects of the fae world found in The Ancient Magus’ Bride...
Frozen Flowers by Kore Yamazaki ❤❤❤❤♡ - This is a lovely story about Hazel and his aunt Marie... he goes and sees her every year for Christmas, she is a two legged centaur and not a part of the family any more because of it... it was sweet and family and all about the season!
The Vampire’s Lover by Makoto Sanda ❤❤❤❤♡ - This is about Joel and a behind the scenes look at how he and a leannan sidhe fell in love. It’s quite beautiful how she keeps saying it’s about the roses. He calls himself a bibliomaniac hermit, lol. It’s so poignant!!
Pyrite Knight by Kairi Aotsuki ❤❤❤❤❤ - LOVED this one... Felicia is a 13 year old who has the sight. She does something she was warned not to do and finds herself with an unexpected protector. Loosely connected to our artificer. Love the idea stones contain the world’s memories!
Rainbow Day, Feast Day by Hikaru Sakurai ❤❤❤❤❤ - Really loved this about Silky... we learn about her back history and how she came by her cookery skills. It was quite lovely how it was about the long ago past, recent past and present all swirled together.
Defender and Ash by Sakura Satou ❤❤❤❤♡ - Two sisters are connected through a spooky evil swamp in the middle of a forest. I was really touched by the sisters' relationship at the heart of this story. We get a look at mages that we haven't gotten to see before too, including about familiars!
The Man Who Hungered for Trees by Jun’ichi Fujisaku ❤❤❤♡♡ - This was incredibly boring as it started about a programmer and I just wasn't getting how it fit in the world. If I read it separate from this anthology I may have liked it better because it did turn horror in a good way at the end.
The Sun and the Dead Alchemist by Kiyomune Miwa ❤❤❤❤❤ - This was my favorite of all the stories, because it expands on a rather unique member of the world... A dark and evil character who had the opportunity to be better that he had hereto been. It totally fits in the tone of the world and more like stories this one would have made this volume one of the best books of the year.
Jack the Flash and the Rainbow Egg (part 1) by Yuu Godai ❤❤❤❤❤ - This was a really neat detective story about a changing and her “brother” hunting down a really special object for an even more special client. This was just the first half but I really enjoyed it and am looking forward to the second half... This would make a great spin-off story too!!
As a Writer...
I really love that this anthology was created with a particular world as the common element. It was really smart to me because despite not loving one of the stories for the most part I did enjoy all the rest. They covered a gamut of genres from slice of life, to horror to character driven to detective story and I just love that! We get to see sides of The Ancient Magus' Bride world that we probably won't within the manga!!
The Ancient Magus' Bride The Golden Yarn (Light Novel vol 1) was a fascinating dip into The Ancient Magus' Bride world... we got to meet all sorts of creatures and beings and maneuver with humans through this dangerous and spooky world, finding the light when we can!!

I really liked this book, this was the sort of book I though The Ancient Magus Bride Merkmal was going to be like! A collection of side stories adding to the main plot all very different from each other and I kind of love that they were all written by different authors. Kore Yamazaki had to have a lot of trust and faith to allow others to contribute to her book, personal I don’t think I could do it, so fair play! I think The sun and the dead alchemist, and the Jack the flash part 1 were my favourites. Because I’m a hopeless romantic and because I need to know the ending! Many thanks lovely addition to the collection, highly recommend 4.9/5
This book is a series of stories set in the Ancient Magus’ Bride world. As with most anthologies these were hit and miss. There were some I really loved and some I thought were pretty boring.
Most of these stories are about some characters in the series. Although some of them were about characters I didn’t remember from the series (although this may be my faulty memory). There were maybe three stories I really enjoyed, the rest were so-so.
I really loved “Rainbow Day, Feast Day” which gives background on Silky. I also loved “The Main Who Hungered for Trees” about a computer programmer whose genius comes from an unlikely source. Lastly “The Sun and the Dead Alchemist” was also very good. The other stories I was very indifferent towards, some of them were flatout boring and I ended up skimming through them.
Overall this was an okay set of stories set in the Ancient Magus Bride world. Like any anthology I thought it was very hit or miss. Some of the writing doesn’t flow as well as it could because of translation. I probably won’t be picking up the next short story collection “The Silver Yarn” just because I didn’t enjoy this one all that much.
To be honest, I'm a little underwhelmed, which is quite disappointing as this manga series is one of my favorites. The Golden Yarn is a companion spinoff to The Ancient Magus' Bride series and features some side stories based on the world. There were some stories I really liked, but overall, I couldn't connect with the book. However, I'll be picking up the second volume and see where it goes!
More of a 3.5 star rating; This is definitely a book to read, if you’re a die-hard fan of the original Ancient Magus’ Bride series. It contains a series of short stories that either brilliantly expand on the lore, or give some insight into some minor/side characters from the main storyline. I liked some of the stories in this light novel much more than other, specifically the one about Silver Lady. Overall though, I won’t be reading the second light novel in this series due to wanting to put my focus back on the main storyline. Light Novels just aren’t my preferred choice of reading, but I’m glad I gave this one a chance.
This was a pretty good collection of stories from this world. Some favorites were Pyrite Knight and Defender and Ash. My least favorite was The Vampire's Lover as it changed some cannon elements. All in all, I am looking forward to the second collection.
"When you encounter things you do not understand, close observation can offer clarity."
"When the wind is dancing about, and the rainbow comes from over the hill...that's a special day, isn't it? Not a day history decided was special, just a day you feel is special in your heart."
"The silver lady nodded like a tiny flower, bashfully blooming, bowing its head in the morning mist."
This is a pretty cool mini little story in this cool book. Every story was written very well and I enjoyed reading them all. I don't know if its because I never read the main manga but I did get confused at some points. Overall a great story to read.
You already know I love The Ancient Magus’ Bride😩 What surprised me was that I got to see Chise and Elias in some of the stories! I loved this book. From my favorite to least favorite of the short stories:
The Vampire’s Lover ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Good grief, as if these two couldn’t get any cuter and make me cry more😩😩 I appreciated just the domestic-ness and simplicity of their relationship. I love how Joel always suspected her presence. I love the Lennan Sidhe’s progression of falling in love with him and denying it over and over. I already loved these two in the manga, but to get to see their relationship before it’s tragic end was so sweet. I love these two character’s designs beyond ANYTHING. My favorite, favorite, favorite, favorite, favorite part was when they “danced”. When he thought, ‘may this moment never be forgotten’ and she said “I’m dancing with you”😩😩😩😩😩😫😫😫😫😫😫😭😭😭😭😭😭🤌🤌🤌🤌🤌💘🧡💗🖤💘
The Man Who Hungered for Trees ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I JUST LOVE CODE. The fact that the story centers around computer code just SENT my computer-science-major-heart. I was so surprised when they were talking about C# and assembly code. Also(big code rant coming up) I WOULD BE ANNOYED TOO IF I HAD A COWORKER WHO ONLY WROTE IN ASSEMBLY CODE AND NEVER LEFT COMMENTS!!!!!! DO YOU KNOW HOW HARD CODING IN ASSEMBLY LANGUAGE IS???? Anywho, I enjoyed the horror aspect and all the weird elements tied together. I really don’t think the main character deserved it tho😦 Paul being born out of a weed plant SENT ME.
Rainbow Day, Feast Day ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Of course I love Silky😩 I shot to the moon when Chise showed up in the story. Wasn’t expecting that. The amount of recipe ideas I got from this story is yum-o. I love stories about cooking and just ELIAS AND CHISE DOING DOMESTIC SHIT, I NEED MORE OF IT.
Jack the Flash and the Rainbow Egg (Part 1) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Jack was FUNNY. This writing style was somethin else. I loved all the pop culture references and slightly crude humor. She’s just an Otaku girl who wants some good manga😩🤌🤌🤌 Larry was REALLY funny. This was just a fantastically written story. I wanna read the manga spin-off now for real!
The Sun and the Dead Alchemist ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ CHISE AND ELIAS AGAIN SURPRISED ME AGAIN. Getting to see Chise interact with anyone new is CUTE. Iron Rust was like a bitch, but like a respectable bitch? Like I didn’t dislike her at all. She was just stuck-up. I adored the story with her sleigh beggy and loved that it was a love story🥺 This was one of the more sadder stories though. The way she talked about Elias and Chise; how she wanted them to suffer, but be happy too was REALLY interesting. I enjoyed this one.
Pyrite Knight ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I enjoyed Felicia’s character and point of view. This writing style was seriously amazing. I loved Lewis’s bluntness. And then there was this one part where Lewis protected Felicia and she thinks ‘DAMN HE’S HANDSOME’. So, this is a 13-year-old saying this about….what….I mean it doesn’t really matter his age, but like an ADULT. And I was just like THIS IS SO MAGUS I’M NOT EVEN SURPRISED. The only thing that surprised me was that this wasn’t even KORE writing this one. HER TEENAGE-GIRL-IMMORTAL-MAN-LOVE-STORY HAS SPREAD TO OTHER CORNERS OF THE WORLD. Obviously they didn’t do anything with this romance in the short story, but honestly that is pretty accurate for a 13-year-old to fantasize about😂 I know I was like that. I love seeing her in the future in the end to know how she was doing!!!❤️❤️❤️
Frozen Flowers ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This was just a really sweet and cute story. I liked learning more about Hazel and centaurs in general. I loved seeing Kore’s writing style as opposed to her art style!
Defender and Ash ⭐️⭐️⭐️ This was the only story I didn’t like. The main girl kind of annoyed me, but honestly I just thought it was poorly written. It’s never a great idea to start with description in your story, and I felt like a lot of important elements like her parents and relationship with her sister were glossed over. The scene where she reserects the souls was also a bit anti-climactic. The overall ending was sweet tho.
So there are all the stories! Also, I don’t know why this is, but most if not all the stories used this specific technique to show when a character was speechless “…………” I have never seen this technique used in a book, so it’s weird that like 5 different authors used this, but I’m kind of in love with it. I’ll have to use that in my writing.
This was a great read! I recommend it to anyone who likes fantasy. Very light and fun read. It's a fantasy short story collection of eight stories. About 50 pages a story. Beautiful cover and each story has a nice illustration.
The Golden Yarn is referring to how all the stories spin and twist together into a beautiful collection.
Some of it might be a bit dark or sad, but I found it did it with a bit of class, just right. Anyone could handle it. It's mostly calming and a very nice read.
It's connected to The Ancient Magnus Bride manga/anime, but requires no previous knowledge. It's more stories that take place in the fantasy version of earth of the original series. A few of the characters in the original series make appearances. They are introduced to us again though if you are a newcomer.
The original author of the series contributed one story and she oversaw the other stories. Unsurprisingly there are a lot of great female characters.
I actually read the second collection, The Silver Yarn, mostly first. Though one story has part one in The Golden Yarn, and part two in The Silver Yarn so I wanted to read part one. Will write about the second collection shortly.
I want to write a bit about each of the eight stories.
Frozen Flowers is a calming, sweet, nice story about a centaurs family.
The Vampire's Lover expands on the backstory of two of the characters in the main series. Very nice read.
Pyrite Knight was a great read of a girls mysterious protector and some of their adventures. It almost feels like this could be the start of a series.
Rainbow Day, Feast Day gives us some moments with a few of the characters from the main story, and some extra backstory of something one of them Silky, the silver lady, experienced in her past. A very good read and pleasant and light.
Defender and Ash is probably my favorite story in this collection. Excellent characters, very good storytelling, very emotionally engaging and mysterious. A story of a girl and her sister and their history and her journey. It feels like this would be the start of a series, and it's crazy how much I cared about these characters in about 50 pages. I can't believe that's it forever for them.
The Man Who Hungered for Trees is a curious one. Very different tone and feeling. Tells a mystery about a computer programmer who vanishes and some suspicious behavior at his place. This one stayed in my mind for sure.
The Sun and the Dead Alchemist was sad, but a beautiful read. About an alchemist and their companion, interesting character, good depth, and also has more moments with some of the characters from the main series.
Jack The Flash and The Rainbow Egg (Part 1) was a great urban fantasy. It took a bit to introduce the characters, but told a great story in New York with a dragon egg gone missing and was like a detective story. Good characters. I'm glad it's just part 1. Looking forward to getting back to part 2.
Kore Yamazaki's Mahoyome has been one of my favourite mangas to read since it started, mainly for the detailed worldbuilding it incorporates. This short stories collection further expands that world, although admittedly it's not a clean run.
The stories in this collection are split, with half focusing on characters who've appeared in the original series and the other half with new original characters. It's a pretty balanced book in this aspect, although some of the original works might seem to rather aimless.
My favourite story in the collection is the last one, Jack the Flash by Yuu Godai, although it ends with a pretty big cliffhanger. It's the only story in the series thus far to show us how the magic world works in the New World and parts of it reminds me a lot of Neil Gaiman's American Gods (one of my favourite books of all time). It's also a pretty good detective whodunnit with some really amazing takes on melding modern conveniences with magical ones, especially a part where computer "spirits" come in to play.
Another favourite of mine is Rainbow Day, Feast Day by Hikaru Sakurai which focuses on the enigmatic Silver One, who never speaks but is a ever-present part of the main cast. There have been hints of a much more tragic past behind her, but this short story takes an interesting decision to not focus on that but instead recalls of happier days behind her.
The rest of stories are decent as well, although the themes and stories vary quite a lot between them, sometimes leaving me with some confusion as to the connection of it towards the overall world of the Ancient Magus Bride. Nevertheless, I find the great stories to be well worth the purchase for this book.
I started reading Ancient Manus Bride last year and I have been anxiously waiting for the next manga volume which I believe releases soon.
Finding out there were light novels, were a plus. I have missed the world and gives me a way to see beloved characters as well as some new ones.
I had heard about the manga for Jack Flash but did not really pay it much attention but reading the short story has been me curious. It gave me a noir type feel while reading. And I thought Jack was a guy because of the tone, but was surprised when I found out that I had been wrong. With the way Part 1 ended, I will have to start Silver Yarn to see how it ends.
I enjoyed most of the short stories. I of curse loved more than others. Anytime I get to see Chise and Elias is a happy occasion. Or when I was reading about Redcurrant and Joel. I loved their meeting in the manga and anime, and getting to see more focus on it was great. Ashley's story about her sister and trying to right a wrong, I loved.
Do you like Ancient Magus' Bride? Want to see some more of the world and especially some of the supporting cast?
This is the collection for you. (I'll be getting to Silver Yarn eventually). As with any other anthology you may like certain stories more than others. I certainly did. But after looking at a bundle of reviews from other Goodreads users -- we all seem to like/dislike different ones for different reasons. Which is why I gave the book 4-stars. Because I liked it on the whole, I liked what it did for the AMB world, and because it left me wanting to read more. I'd say that is one of the marks of a successful collection.
If you like AMB -- definitely worth a look. If you aren't familiar with AMB -- this is not the place to starts, but it should be part of your journey.
An anthology of stories, each with one or two beautiful and evocative illustrations, based on the world of the manga & anime series The Ancient Magus' Bride. All writers hold true to the tone and magic system of the original and clearly love the world and characters. Most characters are original though a few include canon characters, mostly Elias and one gives us some backstory on Silver/Silky. Ranges from a sad love tale or two to adventure. I never did finish the final story-- it just didn't grab me--but I enjoyed the others. looking forward to eventually getting The Silver Yarn.
Highly recommended for teen and adult fans of the manga and/or anime. Others will find it a bit confusing; I'd recommend reading or watching at least some of one or the other first.
I was expecting this to be interesting considering it was similar to other light novels I have read in the past. One of the biggest aspects that keeps me interested in the series is usually the characters. In this case, I liked very few of the characters that were presented to us. The stories could get confusing to follow at times, leaving me to reread certain sections multiple times. In some cases, I had to go back to another section in order to understand what I was reading.
I got halfway through the book before deciding against finishing it. Overall, I would not personally recommend this book to anyone. If you're going to read it, expect to be confused while reading this book.
The Ancient Magus Bride is a manga series I have fallen in love with. It has the beauty of magic and fantasy rolled together that is still innocent as it enchants a person. There are eight short stories in this collection that can be read alone, or as a supplement to the manga series. Each story dives into the world of magic that Kore Yamazaki has created and enhances it. Of these stories, I found my favorite to be Pyrite Knight, but all of them are interesting in their own right. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves fantasy fiction and of course if you read Ancient Magus Bride, you really need to read these stories!
Firstly, if you haven't read the manga or seen the anime, please do so!! Easily one of my top 5 anime. The creator and many other authors collaborate to create this book of short stories to add to this beautiful universe. "Defender and Ash" and "The Sun and the Dead Alchemist" were so moving, that they had me in tears. "Jack the Flash" has a manga adaptation that I actually own but have not read yet. The stories were all so good that I had to take some time before I moved on to the next one because I wasn't able to move on yet. The artists that worked together for this truly created some magic.
I liked a few of the stories, but I thought that most of them were fairly boring. It just felt like to me that there wasn't much point to most of the stories, and most of the new characters in these stories weren't that interesting to me. A few of of the stories were also just really confusing to follow. It might still be an ok read if you're a fan of the series (like I am) since it's not terrible, but definitely don't recommend to non-fans.
This is like side stories to the main story. Theres also non-canon stories that other authors wrote based on the original author's world which is pretty interesting. Totally recommended if you are a fan of the series but if you are not a fan I guess its a little bit difficult unless u read fantasy fiction
my favourite chapters are definitely silky's story and defender&ash, I got bewitched by the fantasy described
I really enjoyed this collection of short stories! Each was great on its own, but it was fun seeing how each author was able to connect their story to The Ancient Magus Bride while still making the story their own. I’d love to see this series of light novels keep going, there’s so much potential in the world of AMB, with all the different creatures and side characters.
My personal favorites in this collection were Defender and Ash, and The Man Who Hungered for Trees.
Enjoyable collection of short stories that take place in the world of the Ancient Magus' Bride manga. Every story but the last one seemed to fit fairly seamlessly into the lore, and it was interesting to read about the other characters and creatures that inhabit that world. Tragedy and joy lace together many of the stories and I would recommend this book for fans and non-fans alike.
