The Boss's Daughter

Rate this book
I am marked by the Black Rose, the symbol of my father’s cruelty and arrogance. It’s a stain that will never wash out, the same mark all those girls carry—the ones who keep turning up dead. My father, underboss for a powerful crime family, killed my fiancé, then told me he’d see me dead too. The only reason he didn’t kill me right then and there was because he wanted me to suffer first. But he will never break me. I ran away. I survived. Those other girls…they weren’t so lucky. To stop the murders, I’ll have to go back and give my father what he wants. Me. My blood. And then there’s Hunter…the only man I want, and the only one I can never have. If he finds out who I am, everything I’ve fought for will fall apart. There will never be a knight in shining armor to rescue the girls of the Black Rose. I’ll have to do that myself. The blood of the Family runs in my veins, and I will not go down without a fight.

I'm a sucker for mafia romances and this one blown my mind! Seriously the fact that it has suspense, secrets, romance and many more made me love it even more!
Renee lost her fiance on their wedding day and her father is responsible. Her father is one of the underbosses of the largest organized crime family. After finding out how her father really feels about her, she decides to run away. She manages to do it and change her name to Chloe. Now 8 years later, girls with a black rose tattoo keep turning dead. Chloe knows that the killings have to do with her disappearance all these years ago. Hunter, is the FBI agent investigating the murders. Fate brings them together and the attraction between them is undeniable. However, he soon finds out about her tattoo and the truth is out.
The book is really amazing. I never knew what was going on next. People that was suppose to be dead, comes out alive and many other are dying. Secrets and hidden agendas are being revealed and Renne's role is bigger than what she thinks.
It's a really good book, full of suspense and secrets! Check it out today, you won't regret it!!

The first thing I am going to say about this book is that if you think a character is safe, think again. Nobody in this book is safe from this authors fingers when it comes to the storyline.

I loved the storyline and not knowing what was coming next. There is a romance involved in this book, but it isn't the main theme. This is a mystery and mafia embed book that centers around Renee (Chloe) and her father Matthew. Chloe is a wonderfully strong character that takes lead in this book and doesn't take any prisoners. Her father Matthew is a psychopath that everyone has to watch out for.

David is a wonderful character that is watching in the background until the end when Chloe needs a helping hand.

Hunter is great and is equal to Chloe and just what she needs to for who she turns into now. We don't really get to know Christopher to much but I wonder if he would have been strong enough to handle her?

Good book and would recommend it. I voluntarily read an advance reader copy for my honest review.

I really, really, thoroughly enjoyed this book. It’s not my usual genre but the blurb caught my eye, and I’m glad it did.

Anyone loving underworld crime stories, with enough twists and turns to strangle your stomach, will love this book. I’ve already insisted a few of my friends read this book.

Matthew Parnell is one sadisticly sick individual, his hatred for his daughter is apparent from the off. And there’s no love lost the other way. But how Renee even gets out of bed in the morning to face another day is a wonder.

This book is full of characters you’ll love to hate, love to love, and those you just can’t decide on lol.

This is the first book I’ve read from this author but I’ll certainly be looking out for more from her.

An exciting and well written Mafia story.

This is the first book I have read from this author, and I must say it won’t be the last.
Jennifer Bates has a way of pulling you into the story’s plot.
There are twists and turns where you don’t know what to believe. Is he dead? Is he alive? Why was this one killed?
Who is my friend and who is spying on me.
The book kept me up til the wee hours of the morning so I could finish it.
Jennifer, you have my vote! Write some more Mafia books.

A 16-year-old high-powered madam? Okay, sure. And then she ran, and even though the previous madam gave her the evidence she needed to get rid of her father, she never looked, didn't take it with her, didn't think about it until everyone's lives were in danger, and some of the girls were already dead. And once she goes back to being a (now) mob boss, her FBI boyfriend joins her. Again, okay, sure. Add in some secret grandpas, not-dads, heart attacks - we've got a soap opera. This was definitely not for me, and I usually love mafia romances.

The Boss’s Daughter, by Jennifer Bates, is a romantic thriller about fighting to protect your friends and family, even if it means putting yourself in danger.

Renee Parnell grew up in a mob family, where loyalty is everything, and one misstep could end with her dead. When she meets a young man named Christopher Reynolds, he begins to show her that there is more to life than what she knew now, and the two subsequently fall in love. However, on the day of her wedding, Christopher tragically dies, leaving Renee to pick up the pieces. Years later, a woman named Chloe Riggs is reunited with a friend, who shared the same, tragedy as she. When she meets a man named Hunter however, memories from that past pour themselves in front of her. She soon realizes that she can no longer hide, and with nowhere else to run, she has to fight back for what was once hers. In this distorted fairytale, Bates shows just how far arrogance will go for the sake of power, and that even so, you still have to fight for what is truly yours.

I loved Renee. She’s a strong, no-nonsense woman that can get whatever she wants just from her glare. Even when she was little, she was tough, doing whatever it took to survive the world she was forced into. It took a lot for her to leave that world behind, but even so, she wasn’t helpless. She wasn’t going to wait around for someone to save her. That’s the aspect I enjoyed most about her, simply because she had the choice either to wait for help and die, or run away and survive. What’s more, she even made sure her friends were able to get away safely. I really did wish she took over the mob, but I’ll have to admit that a normal life does suit her. Alice and Sasha, on the other hand, weren’t as lucky. My heart broke after Alice and her son had died, as well as the horrifying details of what’d happened to Sasha. Then there was Matthew, who did everything he could to cling to his position. It didn’t matter who he had to trample on, whether it be loved ones, family members, even his own allies; he will do whatever it takes to make sure he stayed on top. He was ruthless, merciless, and arrogant, and it gave me some satisfaction to know how pitiful his end was. But I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. Both he and his daughter, after all, danced the “Danse Macabre”, all the way to the bitter edge. It’s only natural that he succumb to its melody.

Parnell delves into the theme of fighting for yourself, for the right to exist. Just because someone else says it’s wrong for you to live doesn’t mean a damn thing. Renee showed that she wasn’t bound to anyone’s rules. She wasn’t bound to societal norms, nor was she willing to play the part of a damsel in distress. She knew she couldn’t depend on anyone else, and because of the world she lived in, she had to get by on her intellect and charisma. I loved this, because though Mathew thought he had the entire world at his fingertips, that delusion came to an abrupt end. Like the many demons before him, his pride led to his downfall.

I did feel the romance in the book was a bit rushed. I was okay with Christopher and Renee, but Chloe and Hunter felt out of place. I was still lulling over the fact that Christopher had died, so a bit more development on their relationship would’ve been great. The investigation procedures were also hazy. To be honest, I didn’t like the way Hunter immediately recognize that the black rose tattoo on Renee was actually connected to the murders. Again, more development would’ve been nice.

Nevertheless, I did enjoy this book. From Renee’s character development, to the themes of determination and perseverance, Parnell paints a dark, yet heroic picture of a woman who will stop at nothing to get her happy end. There were some points in the plot could use more development, but the finer aspects of the book more than made up for it. As such, I would give this book a rating of a 3.7 out of 5 stars, and would recommend the book to fans of Betting on the Devil by Emma Mohr, and The Executioner, by Ana Calin.

I love mafia books. There are so many angles a book can go and how intense this type of book can get only in a few chapters. That is what happened. The first chapter, I actually really enjoyed. You learn more than you think in that opening chapter. You actually see how the characters are going to be and which ones you can trust, which ones you want to, and how it will all come full circle at the end. There is going to be so many twists and turns after that chapter that you will not know who can be trusted or who can be saved in the end. Renee was a the main character and what happens in the first chapter, I really think develops her more into a woman that she is today. I wanted to love this character and be drawn to her. In some instances I was, but I still couldn't get a full connection with her. You could see her love for Christopher and I think that was one of my favorite scenes at the beginning, but some of the things she did was a little unbelievable even for a mob daughter. I do like how she became her woman even if it was at 16. Or how the woman trusted her throughout the story. Sorry getting ahead of myself. This book does jump back to the past to give you a little more background on what made Renee the way she was and how she needed to move on during this book, not only move on but leave what was going to kill her. I just wish there was a bit more explaining things more. Michael, head man, the big boss man, or whatever want to call him, he is crazy. Simply out of his mind. He wants what he wants and he will do anything and I guess hating your daughter is one of those. Hunter is and extraordinary guy and how him and renee hit it off is good. I just wished there was more there too. I know that I am not giving you much, but in this story you have to learn quickly. No one is your friend, you can't trust anyone, and watch your back because you don't know who is coming for you.

This book is extremely intense and has a lot going on. You will love the characters, you will hate them, you don't know who is going to betray who next, and when you think you got it figured out something else changes your mind. For that I loved that moment when you think it figured out and BAM!!!!! You were so wrong. That is what is going to happen to you in this book. Upside down, inside out, and around the middle and you still won't have a clue till the end. Love them or hate them in this book, this is one mafia book you need to read.

This was the author's first book and all I have to say is what a great job this author did. The writing is great. The mystery, the intensity, the constant guessing, what more can a girl want. I can't wait to see what this author has in store for us next.

What a good debut book!! The storyline was interesting and it was difficult knowing what was coming up or happening next. My favorite part of this book was the fact that everyone is up for bad things happening, no one is safe, and not even the lead characters… actually they might have it worse than everyone else! The Boss’s Daughter has so much going on! That’s a good and a bad thing. I did have a bit of a hard time keeping up with it all. You won’t know who to trust and who not too. Thankfully, Jennifer Bates puts it all together for us in the end… you’ll be wrong in your opinion. You’ll be shocked!

It was a good story but there was something that was off for me. It might have just been the fact that you never know which way is up and which way is down. Bates takes you on this insane journey. I do love a good underworld crime romance and this had all the elements! Bates does a fantastic job on making you like or strongly dislike her characters. I loathed Matthew Parnell with a passion! How anyone can hate their child so much is beyond me! The fact that Renee can even go about her day and still believe is amazing to me. The romantic areas of this book was a bit rushed or hurried over. I think it’s just because so much is happening. I think if we had gotten rid of a couple happenings this book would be perfection for me!

I received an ARC of this book with the hope that I would leave an Unbiased Opinion. I was not required to leave a review, positive or otherwise, and my opinions are just that... my opinions.

The Boss’s Daughter

Reviewed on behalf of 3 Degrees of Fiction Book Blog

I know it’s only February but this has to be one of the best books that I have read this year!I have no doubt it will end up in my top 10 of 2018! It was gripping, it was exciting, it was dark and I loved it! I love Mob stories so I was really excited when I found this one and it did not disappoint AT ALL!! From the very first page I knew it was going to be good! There was more than one occasion when I was on the edge of my seat and I loved that the author managed to keep certain parts of the plot secret until they were revealed. It was a unique storyline and in no way predictable.
I loved Renee (Chloe) she was a brilliant female lead. I admired her for her strength especially having to deal with the things that she had to – she had compassion when she needed it but she also knew how to protect herself and the people that she loved.
Hunter was amazing! I loved him straight away. When he revealed his story I could have cried for him. I loved how the author intertwined all of the characters – it brought them all together nicely in my opinion.
David was another character I really liked, he did have that loving Grandfather feel about him but you also knew not to cross him!! He would do anything (like Renee/Chloe) to protect the people he loves.
Overall a really great mafia romance with some great twists and turns in it! I loved every second of it and cannot recommend it enough!! I am really looking forward to more in this series!

The Boss's Daughter was the first book that I've read by Jennifer Bates, and I absolutely LOVED every minute of it! I won't go into too many details as it's a story filled with suspense, and it's much better for everyone to go in blind, but basically, Renee Parnell is a powerful mob boss's daughter. But her father is a sadistic douche who hates her, so it's made her strong at a young age, and she's learned how to play the game well. That's all that I'm giving away, so you will just have to experience it for yourselves, as I wouldn't do it justice anyway. Renee is a powerhouse in her own right, as she's had to learn just to stay one step ahead of her father & his minions in order for self preservation, and to keep those she loves safe. Jennifer Bates showed me a brilliant writing style with a mafia story that kept me on the edge of my seat cover to cover with my heart racing the whole time. The twists & turns were around every corner had my f-bomb dropping strong, and honestly that's all that I could say most of the story to be honest. This is the start of a series that has me already addicted, so I can't wait to read more, and HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO ALL!

🔥🔥Suspense - Romance - Deception 🔥🔥
This was an outstanding and engaging read
What happens when your life is a lie?
What happens when everyone you love is violently ripped from your world by the one person you loved unconditionally?
Do you walk away to save your own soul?
Or do you choose to fight fire with fire- possibly sacrificing your essence during the elimination of the depraved?
This is one of those that will engage you from the opening scene to the closing - lots of hidden gems that lead to some surprising twists and OMG moments
Renee comes across much older than the book states - she is strong and determined - I would say her upbringing had a lot to do with that - Many of the situations are a bit outside common norms but well within possibility
I do wish it had been a bit longer - There were some scenes that I would have liked a bit more detail on but it did not diminish the story
I checked this out on Kindle Unlimited
* Please note it is a Fictional Mafia Romance. In other words, the author does take some liberties with social norms*

I thought this was a interesting read the way the story line was very unique and different I know I'll be reading more by Jennifer Bates . From the first page my emotions took a hit it was very unexpected and I was like WHAT and then the next chapter I was like WHAT but it intrigued me wanting to know what was going to happen it was the blurb that had me but after reading the prologue it had me hooked . I don't want to give to much away but be prepared to be on a emotional roller coaster there will be characters you love and others you'll HATE but be ready for a book hangover with a happy read right after this one .

The Boss's Daughter (Book One of the Black Rose Series)
by Jennifer Bates sucked me in the moment I started reading it. I was consumed. It has been a long time since I had been that nervous for all the characters in a book as a read along. It seemed no one was safe.

This book is riddled with twists and turns you will never see coming and just when you think the deceit cannot go any deeper Jennifer Bates takes you there and then pushes you over just a little bit more. I thoroughly enjoyed never knowing what was going to happen next.

Renee Parnell is the daughter of the notorious crime boss Matthew Parnell daughter. One would think that would put her far up on the protected list and make her some sort of royalty. Nope. Renee has fought tooth and nail for everything she has ever had. Her father has treated her like dirt and takes everything that has gone wrong in his life out on her.

The way Renee calculated and took in the crime world was interesting. She was not this poor little bird who needed protected. She was a beast who could take out just about anyone out but chose to set back and watch the eliminate one another. She cared for the girls and people that her father would just toss out. I cannot wait to see where the next book takes this series.

This is the author’s debut novel and I just can’t wait to read more by her. This is a full novel that will have you wanting to know more and more about the lives and secrets of these characters. At first, I was a bit put off by the fact that you start at one point then go back about 20 years in the past for the backstory thinking you know how it will end, but keep reading and you will realize there are so many layers of this story. This is a great mystery, suspense, mafia, and crime novel that is the start of this author’s series called “The Black Rose”. I write this honest review voluntary after receiving an ARC copy and I would highly recommend this book. I was a lovely change from what I have recently been reading and had me totally hooked.

This book had so much potential but fell flat for me. I had so much confusion at the beginning. I couldn't keep all the names straight and kept wondering if it would get better. It did a little bit but not like I'd hoped it would. Also, what dad is cool with their 16 year old daughter running an escort service. I get he wanted to keep her out of his business but I thought it was a bit much. This book is strictly about the Mafia. The romance aspect kinda took a back burner for most of the book. When it did happen, the author was a bit to descriptive on some parts and kinda mad me laugh. This was just in the first sex and only sex scene in the book. There was something missing for me. I wasn't hooked and left wanting more.

I enjoyed this book, but the thing that threw me off the most was how it was written in third person. I guess not many people write in third person nowadays, so it took a few chapters to get into, and to be honest, I didn’t think I’d be able to make it very far for that reason alone.

But I kept on going and things got better. Holy mother of plot twists, Batman! When that happened, I literally said out loud “Holy. Crap.” And my grandmother looked at me funny until I explained what happened.

I’m glad the story ended the way it did. I would honestly have been disappointed if it had been any other outcome, so I’m glad that it went the direction that it did.

More suspense than romance, this one held me hostage until I got to the end. It may have been the turkey coma, but I felt a little dizzy from all the names and info in the beginning, but once it got rolling, I was hooked! Renee/Chloe is an absolute gem of a female character to read! She had me cheering her on the entire time!! Action and twisty turns had me glued, but the romance and love felt a little glossed over and too insta for me. All in all, a fantastic mafia suspense read!! I thank the Author for providing a copy to review!

This book started out slow for me. It took me a while to make myself read it. I kept "finding" other things to do and read until I finally stopped procrastinating and read it. Once I got through the first half, I was okay. I enjoyed it and was consistently surprised by the new twists popping up from page to page. Crime bosses, sanctioned murders, secret boxes, lost loves, potentially new-found love, and a lot of loss at the hands of someone who is supposed to love you unconditionally. Well, I guess you could say there were conditions, and they all started with the birth of Renee Parnell.

Father dearest

Violence, jealousy, greed, passion are common adjectives related to mafia and mobsters, but family and honor are valued the best. It's hard to believe the heartless and evil actions taken by an interview completed dominated by his greed and desire to be number one in the family. Luckily his "official" daughter, raised in this environment, was able to keep her heart in the right place and allow love in her life when a second chance opportunity knocked her door. Lots of sacrifices but all was worthy.

I bought this book from Jennifer Bates at a author signing. I was impressed with her, I was totally drawn in by the books cover. I took time to read the back and knew I had to have and read this one.
I was immediately pulled deep into the world of The Family, The Costra Nostra. However with this book there were things that were not in your typical Mafia book.
I don't want to give spoilers. I can only say I would give this book a 10 if that was an option. Do your self a favor, read it or get a copy for some one you care about

3.5 STARS! I really enjoyed this story. I wouldn’t consider this a dark read but some subject matter could be consider dark to some people. This is a story about Chloe who grew up in a mafia type family, raised by her father who she grew up trying to impress and earn his respect as she learned the family business inside and out. This story has love, loss, betrayal and vengeance. I would definitely recommend this story.

This author was new to me and I’m glad I was able to know about her.

This book was amazing! You have so much coming at you and the twist and turns that kept you glued in from the beginning.

I love how Renee/Chloe took control of her life and knew what she had to do even though she lost some very close and dear friends.

Meeting Hunter was the best thing that has happened to her even though it was a chance she may lose him after just getting to know him.

When the truth came out from David I was floored especially when a certain someone came back into the picture.

Although the way her father leaves makes you wish it was more than what he got. Even Mr. Crescent got what he deserved.

Well worth reading. Looking forward to more future books by this author.

Terror and excitement galore

I've read over a hundred books this year and this is my favourite. Read the entire book in one night. Constant action moving situations and terror. Blazing storyline and the main characters are full of depth and without thought you become part of their lives. Secrets mystery and excitement lead the way. I'll be reading a lot more Jennifer Bates in the future.

I love a good Mafia romance and this book fit the bill, although a little light on the romance aspect. Ms. Bates new author to me and I would read anything she publishes. This book had so many twists and turns I didn’t know which way was up. Matthew Parnell is one sick and twisted individual. I don’t know how Renee, his daughter, lives with him. There is absolutely no love lost between the two of them. This book leaves you wondering who is your friend and who is spying on you. Love, love this book. I can’t wait to see the next book in the series.

This was strangely sadder than I thought it would be. I do love sadder stories and more complex things as well. So I enjoyed that Bates thought through the emotions she wanted to tell in the story. I do think the romance could have been more pronounced though.

I received a copy of this book and am voluntarily reviewing it.
