When a fashion magazine offers YouTube vlogger and model, Loey Lane, a cover shoot at the iconic Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, she jumps at the chance, flying from her small hometown in Kansas to the City of Angels . . . and ghosts.

Soon after arriving, speculation of a murderous ghost haunting the hotel reaches Loey’s ears. As the rumor goes, those that see the ghost will be the next to die. That very night, Loey watches, mesmerized, as the ghost materializes outside her poolside bungalow. Now she, along with her friends known as the LitSquad, will do anything in their power to save Loey from her supernatural fate. Of course, Loey’s best chance of surviving involves teaming up with a ghost-hunter from her past, a guy hot enough to melt away the promise that Loey made to keep him at a distance.

Haunted in Hollywood: The Adventures of Loey Lane

Real life youtuber Loey Lane stars in the very fictional Haunted in Hollywood, a paranormal murder mystery centered around a glamorous hotel located in the heart of Hollywood California. Here Loey and her friends must unravel the puzzling death of a model who took a plunge from the rooftop of the hotel into the pool below. At her disposal for solving the crime? Her keen eye for observation, a pair of twin ghost hunters, her loyal followers, and hastags. Lots and lots of hashtags.

This novel is very bizarre to say the least. In every aspect of the narrative and it's conception I cannot personal say I saw, any of this coming. I myself was not aware of Loey Lane as a YouTube personality before finding this novel in the young adult section of my local Barnes and Noble, and was quite surprised to find that our protagonist is indeed someone of real flesh and blood. But this story isn't in anyway autobiographical, not in a long shot. What it is, in fact, is a novel that reads like the target demographic was for middle school aged readers, with enough language and references to alcoholic consumption that it should only be read by high school students. It's also in part a murder mystery, a young adult paranormal novel, a romance, and a rose colored glasses look at the life of Ms. Lane of which I will not claim I know anything about. But if this book is anything to go by, I can't say I am that interested to really check her out.

This book being a vanity project aside, what does Haunted in Hollywood have to offer? Well this wild adventures tells the story of Loey Lane, a youtuber from Kansas who specializes in body positivity, makeup and fashion advice, and telling stories of her various paranormal encounters throughout her life. An odd combination, but this is far from the strangest things that happen during the course of the story. Loey has just received an offer to model for a famous fashion magazine in hopes to land her on the cover in an edition honoring the life of famed Hollywood starlet, Marilyn Monroe. Loey is flown to California where she is checked in at the famed Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. She is surprised to find that she in being upgraded to the Marilyn bungalow, a suite reserved for only the most influential guests. What seems like a dream come true suddenly raises more than one red flag when Loey learns that not only is there a ghost haunting the very room she's staying in, but it's last occupant, the model who was originally supposed to be on the cover, took off unexpectedly. Her first stint at modeling is on a rocky start as things keep going bump in the night and the shoot is mysteriously sabotaged. To make matters worse, Loey keeps on seeing a strange apparition of a beautiful women in a flowing white dress and according to the legend of the Roosevelt, 'Whoever sees her next shall die.' Loey's best friends fly in to Hollywood to help solve the perplexing mysteries that are surrounding the hotel. And things are further complicated when an old flame of Loey's, a ghost hunter by the name of Damien Grimm, arrives along with his menacing twin brother, in the hopes of banishing the ghost to the great beyond. Soon the state of Loey's safety is thrown into question when the model that left in hurry is found dead at the very pool in which the photo shoot was meant to take place. Are the rumors of a murderous ghost true? Or is the culprit amongst the living? Matters are further complicated when a second ghost might be haunting the premises and the photographer in charge of Loey's shoot turns lecherous and hopefully I am conveying what is one of the bigger problems of this novel.

There is way too much going on for only two hundred and thirteen pages. Whilst reading Haunted in Hollywood I was certain that this was a story that spanned over the course of a week if not more. So imagine my surprise when it is revealed that this books takes place over the course of roughly three days. Three days is apparently enough time for multiple ghost sightings, a photo shoot for a magazine to go wrong, a killer being loose on the prowl, a murder investigation, and a complicated love triangle. And to kick it all off Loey diligently live streams it all for her beloved followers to see. This novel is so convoluted that a lot plot threads are often left hanging. The reason for certain characters being there is not always made explicitly clear, red herrings are never explained, and even when Loey and her friends figure out what on earth was going on, the aftermath is incredibly rushed and conveniently the reader is meant to believe everything just wraps up nicely. This makes for a read that feels incredibly chaotic from beginning to end. Yet strangely enough, despite being all over the place and incredibly self congratulatory, it was, to certain extent, a fun read.

Haunted in Hollywood is not going to become the next big murder mystery by any means, but its over the top nature and glamorous premise does make the novel kind of fun. It's wacky, very cheesy, and milks the setting of a famed Hollywood hotel that is haunted by famous starlets. I can't go recommending this to everyone unfortunately because I can't even quite say who its target audience is. Adult and teenage readers are more likely going to be put off by the childish nature of the scenario, and all the alcohol consumption and slight swearing makes me hesitate to recommend this to someone thirteen or younger. I suppose if the reader is a very big fan of Ms. Lane they might find some enjoyment knowing a celebrity they liked wrote this book. Or, if they are like me, who was just in the mood for something so cheesy and lacking in any kind of subtlety (no really, the novel opens up with a fan approaching Loey saying how she inspired her to be confident in herself and is mesmerized by her stories of the paranormal), then they'll find this novel a nice quick read. Slightly haunted, but none the less harmless.

I'm probably being generous giving it 3 stars but since I'm not the target demographics I didn't want to judge too harshly. I only finished the book because I hate not finishing a book and it isn't a very long book. It started off promising, but then it got kind of ridiculous and annoying. It felt like this was part of a series, but I can't find any other books featuring Loey Lane. The characters are pretty shallow - kind of the stereotypical millennial. They felt more like they were 16 rather than 21. Perhaps this is the type of fluff reading teens enjoy. As an adult, the book wasn't enjoyable to me.

This book was very bad. Poorly written with a barely discernible plot. A little too similar yet different from Loey's real life and a writing style made for 4th graders with content way more mature. Do not recommend!

I'm happy I got to support Loey by buying her book! For a first novel it isn't too bad, but to be honest it wasn't great either. Granted, I am 26 years old and this novel would probably appeal more to people in their early/mid teens.

There wasn't a lot of depth to be found in any of the characters, and the little bit of the depth I found in the Loey character came mostly from knowing that she is based off a real person who is very entertaining and has lots of personality.

All of the moments with Damien and Loey were cringy, from her internal monologues about how good he looks in his jeans to their actual back and forth exchanges, and I found him as unlikable as his brother. He did the thing, where rather than just explain to Loey straight out why he never showed up to their date, he just kept silent and let her stew in anger and disappointment.

I didn't see it coming when Chase was revealed to be the bad guy, though I do tend to be bad at noticing many aspects of foreshadowing no matter what book I'm reading. I laughed when he explained his reasoning because it's so dumb, but to be honest, in today's day and age I wouldn't be that surprised to see a real news story about a kid who killed and hurt people just to get views. That might be the scariest part of this book!

The last chapter was a little weird... I see what the author was trying to do, but what reason would the entity from the bakery have to randomly follow Loey home NOW, when the incident happened way before?

I am happy that Loey got to publish her book and I'm impressed with all she has accomplished! But I wouldn't have picked it up if just anyone had written it, and it doesn't change the fact that I didn't think the novel was really that spectacular.

A book from one of my favorite Youtubers, and honestly I loved the book. It was a little fast paced for me but overall, it was a great read!!
I would have liked some parts to be more elaborate and having more scenes but I am happy on what I read and wish the best for Loey Lane to be able to publish more books and bring more adventures to Loey Lane!
Thank you so much for writing this book!!
Also, thanks to J.A. Kazimer for co-writing this book!

Lost Lane strikes a homerun

This a fun and easy read. I love Loey's YouTube channel, so if course I had to check out her book. It's fun, interesting, and good for anyone wanting a little ghostly adventure. I got sucked in, not only with the characters, but also the storyline.

I love Loey, I love her scary stories and ghost adventures on her YouTube channel but for me I just didn’t find this book as enthralling. It is such an easy read though and she genuinely done a great job with her first novel.

Extremely repetitive and all over the place. Lovey had no problems hyping herself up, but also ensuring how she’s too sweet and can’t understand why people don’t like her. I swear I could have made a drinking game out of how many times the term Litsquad was used.

I'm sure there will be people who like it, but it feels like a type of story that should stay on a fanfic website to me.

This book was written with teenagers in mind. Reminded me of a Goosebumps book targeted at a semi older audience. Fun to read but a little silly and predictable.

A fast paranormal/mystery story set in LA. A surprise ending, at least I didn’t figure it out until almost the end. Would read another book in this series.

So my school librarian told me to read this bc she didn’t know if she would put it in the library. So I read it and absolutely hated it.it felt like the plot was for 5th graders and the writing felt like those little books you read in 2nd grade.it was boring and repetitive and the last few chapters felt kinda weird.it also felt to close to her real life.also I had to google her bc I didn’t know who she was.but my question is why she wrote a book about herself?

I had no expectations for reading this book. I read all of the lack luster reviews. I found this book fun to read. My actual rating is 3.5 stars. I rounded up for the stars. This was a fun, quick read. I enjoyed this book and if Loey decides to write another book, I will read it.

I loved it. I have been watching Loey on YouTube for years. And I loved how the book played subtle hints at it. I really hope she writes another book because that ending to me was a cliff hanger.

This is a fast-paced and light read (even with the death) that had me laughing out loud more than a bit. There is enough of the Loey Lane her viewers have gotten to know through her YouTube channel to form a connection to the main character, at least for them (us). We get to see the character deal with her insecurities and try to power through them. I'm not sure how sold I am on Damien, but I didn't mind their kiss near the end.

While I wouldn't have minded a slower pace and a more fully developed story, it still managed to not feel like anything was missing. Honestly, I would love to read more stories about this fictionalized version of Loey.
