虽然标题是中东，准确来说，这本书的背景是十多年前的巴以冲突，呈现了作者驻外期间遇到的一个个普通百姓，有巴勒斯坦人也有以色列人。极端分子原来也是有血有肉有感情的人，印象最深的是一个被炸死的兼卖作业本的哈马斯。多年过去巴以问题仍无实质性进展，类似当年的美苏军备竞赛，巴方的“人体炸弹”与以方的“定点清除”实际上已成为维持博弈论平衡所必要的两端，很难被打破，双方身上我们似乎都能看到合理的诉求，调和起来却无比艰难。天佑巴勒斯坦人民。

作者是驻中东的记者，报道巴以冲突，这本书类似采访手记，不仅记录了工作与生活遇见的人和事，还穿插了作者对巴以双方和中东局势的感受。印象最深的是作者认为，唯有将自己装进袍子里，才能理解阿拉伯人。
