They called it The Summer of Spiders, and though there were those in later years who would later go on to question just how much of what people remembered had actually happened, for those who were there, that summer was one that no-one who lived through it would ever, ever forget... In the small, sleepy Norfolk market town of Dyreham, something evil has been unleashed. When a crazed scientist unwittingly allows his army of genetically modified False Widow spiders to escape, it isn't long before the whole town quickly comes under attack from his creations. Meanwhile, as a local reporter begins an investigation into the scientific research institute known as Greenacres, he soon discovers the spiders are just one small part of a much bigger conspiracy...
Mark Woods is a U.K horror author responsible for the novels Time of Tides, Fear of the Dark and The Go-lem, and one of six authors who contributed towards the creation of the vampire novel, Feral Hearts.
I've always been fascinated by spiders and couldn't pass up the opportunity to read a horror novel that featured the creepy crawlies. Every once in a while I like to read out of my normal romance genre and this is a FANTASTIC book to sink my fangs (Eek!) into. I have to say Arachnattack weaves quite a sticky and frightening web and it's one deliciously haunting in both imagery and execution.
The story begins with one determined scientist, and not a nice guy by any means, who keeps conducting his research despite the order to abandon the project. What ensues is nothing short of a grisly, goose bump inducing, look over your shoulder scary, raise the hair on your arms, and all out make your skin crawl horror story that makes you wonder if you should avoid ALL SPIDERS in your future. Especially be on the lookout for black and false widows (insert shiver here).
The appearance of Mr. Skinny Leggs decidedly upped the CREEPY and UNCOMFORTABLE feeling of evil and torment to another level. The summer of the spider is only just beginning and I have to wonder ... what's this little town of Dyreham going to do and how will they thwart Mr. Skinny Leggs? Worse, who's going to hunt ... the eight legged hunters?
A deliciously terrifying story that deserves no less than 5 stars, but don't say I didn't warn you!

Arrachnattack! By Mark Woods was passed to me by HorrorAddicts.net in return for an honest review.
In the Norfolk town of Dyreham, strange things are happening. Melvin Dobbs, an obnoxious and thoroughly unlikeable man, is a scientist in a secretive establishment on the outskirts of town. A project he had been working on was closed down due to funding issues but he continued to carry out his highly illegal and dangerous research on spiders in his own home. Using his research as a means of revenge against those who have crossed him, he forgets to protect himself and unfortunately falls victim to his lethal arachnids. From there, the spiders spread across town, and as their victims pile up, they come to the attention of a local reporter Daniel Blake. As he investigates, a shadowy body, The Company, warn him off his story; others who try to help him die or are discretely silenced. And behind all this is a reference to ‘Mr Skinny Legs’, a supernatural being who appears to be controlling events. I must admit, I took a strong dislike to Mr Melvin Dobbs, so at first it was hard for me to keep going but once he’d been unceremoniously-and deservedly-bumped off, the story really began to draw me in and I’m glad I persevered. In this small town, so much is happening, old mysteries are resurfacing with references to Mr Skinny Legs and the Lovecraftian Elder Gods, that you can’t help but read on. And not every question is answered. You know something more is coming, but that is for the next book. You know something darker than anyone has ever experienced before is hovering on the horizon and you are fed teasing snippets and you want to know more. Again that is for the next book. Mark Woods has created a believable world, has developed characters you begin to care about and want to follow on their adventures, and has laid the foundation of what promises to be an entertaining series.
Must love Spiders Arachnattack! by Mark Woods isn’t for the squeamish. It is a book more for the mature readers, preferably ones that like creepy crawly stories. If you love spiders this one is for You. If you love a good story that gives one the willies this one is for you, if you hate spiders! Well, I’d choose something more your style. This book is a great read, keep them coming Mark
