George and Harold have been reading "East of Eden" with their 5th grade class, so this fourth installment includes some Steinbeck references with chapter title parodies and a couple of short, direct quotes. Dog Man gets the opportunity to expand his super identity and become The Bark Knight. Petey is up to as much mischief as ever (Haw, Haw). He disguises himself as a nanny to try to get Lil' Petey to help him with a new motto: "Thoughtless mayhem is best." He shalt not win with a whole crop of super heroes working against him including Cat Kid, Purse Lady, and Chief Man. There are so many humorous interludes. When Petey tries to obtain some growth formula from Cannery Grow, the sales person asks him for his phone number, reward card number, etc. (Haw, Haw). And I have to mention the hot dog robots. So much fun! Next, George and Harold are reading "Lord of the Flies." Watch out for the fifth Do Man: Dog Man: Lord of the Fleas.

You can just about hear Dav Pilkey laughing out loud to himself as he writes these. I mean, really. Allusions to Faulkner? A robot named 80-HD? (say it out loud so you, too, can get the joke)

Hollywood is making a movie about the Dog Man and his heroics. So the stars of Hollywood come to shoot in town but Dog Man keeps wrecking things for his own movie. Meanwhile, Petey disguises himself as a cat nanny to look after Li'l Petey and turn him evil.

This was hilarious and as always I loved Petey. Petey is my favorite but I also loved Li'l Petey in this. Art was good. I can't wait to read the next in the series.

A law officer's work is never done, and Dog Man is back at it in this fourth book of the series. Petey the Cat's clone, Li'L Petey, is living with Dog Man as a son, but wonders deep down if he can escape the evil influence of his own genetics. Dog Man and Cat Kid begins with an elderly cat-sitter offering to take care of Li'L Petey while Dog Man goes to work. "Mrs. Suspicionflame" seems harmless, and Li'L Petey is comfortable with her. But only Li'L Petey recognizes the sitter's true identity: it's Petey, and he has a plan for vengeance on Dog Man. He wants to rig up 80-HD, Li'L Petey's robot programmed to obey the clone cat, and use it as a mega-weapon. Li'L Petey doesn't want to disappoint his Papa, but will he go along with this illegal scheme?

At the police station, Hollywood director Sam Hamilton proposes an idea for a feature film about Dog Man's adventures. Chief is thrilled, but Hamilton has doubts when he sees how unfocused Dog Man can be. Is this eccentric cop fit to have a movie honoring him? Chief promises Dog Man will behave, and the director accepts his word for now. He introduces Italian actress Yolay Caprese to Dog Man; she'll be a star of the film. Yolay adores Dog Man, and loves rubbing his tummy. The movie is a go, but what's happening back at the dog house with Li'L Petey and his Papa?

The younger cat doesn't want to be involved in crime, but Petey won't let him off that easily. His clone is made of the same stuff he is; he has to be bad. Why, Li'L Petey has broken a few laws just today, including abetting his progenitor. When Li'L Petey wavers in his commitment to goodness, his Papa is there to redirect him toward duplicity. Disguised as Mrs. Suspicionflame, Petey visits Gassy Behemoth Studios with his clone, where filming has commenced on the Dog Man movie. They infiltrate the dressing room and steal high-tech costumes. Meanwhile, Dog Man gets in trouble on the set. Banished from the production site, he sadly heads home to discover that Li'L Petey is missing. Luckily, 80-HD is there to explain what happened. Li'L Petey needs help!

To counteract the powers of the costumes Petey swiped from the studio, Dog Man also dons weaponized garb. Petey's plot to wreck the movie is progressing well. A hostage standoff endangers Yolay Caprese, and only Dog Man is equipped to save her. The situation turns desperate for Petey, who wants to avoid returning to Cat Jail. He buys some Cannery Grow to bring a mechanized monster to life and command it to fight for him. With that, the Beast of Eden is born, a massive Mecha-Bot shaped like a taco that embarks on a rampage and destroys Gassy Behemoth Studios. Dog Man, Chief, and their allies can't defeat the monster on their own. Li'L Petey summons 80-HD, but will it be enough to overcome the gigantic bot and short-circuit Petey's ambition for world domination?

Drawing key moments of inspiration from John Steinbeck's novels, Dog Man and Cat Kid is surprisingly sophisticated, silly as it is. The scrambling of the letters in "Gassy Behemoth Studios" is a smart piece of storytelling, taking us off-guard with its full meaning when Dog Man crashes through the wall in a copter and the letters disassemble from "Thoughtless Mayhem is Best" into a new formation: "Thou Mayest." All Li'L Petey needed was that suggestion that he can be different from his Papa, that good or evil is his choice rather than a genetic mandate he is powerless to override. His DNA is identical to Petey's, but his life need not be the same. He can strive for good rather than perfect, a conflicted hero doing the right thing even though it's not natural for him. Dog Man and Cat Kid is a satisfying book; I rate it two and a half stars, and could round up to three. If this is Dav Pilkey at his best, he's left a solid legacy in children's literature. I'm excited to read more from him.

1. n/a
2. First Grade
3. This book is about the hero dog man and his new sidekick cat kid. A movie star goes missing and they must save her. Petey, the most evil cat gets in their way of saving the day.
4. This book is appropriate for young children because there are few words. I think the illustrations of this book are great for children because they are not the most extravagant. I also think this book allows children to open their creative mind.
5. a. Children can create their own character and make a short story.
b. Provide children with dress-up clothes so they can act out scenes from the book

*Reviewing this as a school librarian for how I think the kids will like the book.*

Graphic novel style book with lots of child level gags and humor (including one illustration of a humanized taco's backside). Bright, colorful illustrations will engage the kids. This is not a book that is intended to offer deep insight into life but it does have several messages for the young reader. First, is not giving up on being the best person you can be even when you have messed up in the past. Second, a brief reference to how making a person be your friend isn't really friendship. And lastly how you are not destined to do bad things just because someone in your family has done them. You have the chance to choose a different path - "thou mayest". This series is already a hit with our K-4th graders and I'm sure this will be no different!

Dog Man and the Cat Kid
by Dav Pilkey

Dav Pilkey has been writing hilarious fun adventures for a decade now, Dav is the creator of Captain Underpants, brings you the fourth installment in his Dog man series.

This time he's not alone. The heroic hound with a real nose for justice now has a furry feline sidekick, and together they have a mystery to sniff out! When a new kitty sitter arrives and a glamorous movie starlet goes missing, it's up to Dog Man and Cat Kid to save the day! Will these heroes stay hot on the trail, or will Petey, the World's Most Evil Cat, send them barking up the wrong tree?

This was filled with lots of dastardly deeds and hilarious moments. I'd recommend this to Children aged 6-10. Also because of the way Dav presents his books their ideal for children with dyslexia. Great series for kids and adults of all ages.

I used to run the scholastic book fair at my daughters' elementary school for 6 years, and the Dav Pilkey books were among the most popular books, whether it was the Captain Underpants books or the Dog Man books. I preferred the Dog Man books because they were somewhat less in the realm of bathroom humor, but also because they tended to have fewer grammatical errors (yes, I know the Captain Underpants errors are deliberate). Still, although these books are not meant for adults, I can see the appeal, from the colorful illustrations to the silly humor, to the easy-to-read stories. There were many kids who didn't consider themselves readers who would gravitate to these books, and in my humble opinion, any book that makes a kid look forward to book fair is a good book.

While the creator is clearly a dog person, I do like that this book and the previous book has a cat that is good, rather than the evil nemesis. Still, I wonder why he had to make the evil villain a cat, lol! I am absolutely 100% biased because while I appreciate dogs, we are a cat household, and we love our cats. This is the only reason why this series might not appeal as much to kids who are cat lovers.

Another thing I like is how the titles of some of the chapters are parodies of books by John Steinbeck. Presumably, the main story is a riff off of East of Eden (he includes a couple of direct quotes from the book), but only loosely. I also learned that Onigiri means rice balls in Japanese and Timshel is the Hebrew word for "Thou Mayest" which plays a part in this story. Any books where I can learn something new makes me enjoy it even more.

This book and series are perfect for elementary and even middle school kids, especially those who are reluctant readers.

“Thou mayest” - Cat Kid (209 Pilkey)

Finishing this book as solidified my previous statement of this being a work of art. The simplistic art melded with wonderful storytelling really made this a favorite. Cat Kids villain arc and subsequent redemption arc has to be one of my favorite developments in fiction. I truly felt hatred for Petey and his manipulation of Cat Kid. Emotions were conveyed incredibly and made me feel for each and every one of the characters, especially Dog Man when he was called a “bad boy” (which he is not, of course). Dog Mans emotional expression was one of my favorites, he doesn’t talk so it’s all conveyed through body language and expression, and it is done so artfully. I also believe this book handles social issues well, including the sexism Yolay experienced at the hand of the director and Peteys negative view of robots. This book was also very inclusive of all different types of species (people, italians, cats, dogs, robots). I really loved Cat Kids and 80-HDs relationship and development as well. The lesson at the end of the book almost made me tear up.

Peak. Fiction.

This book is an absolute masterpiece, a solid 10/10. I purchased it for my son, and seeing how much he enjoyed it, I couldn't resist giving it a go. It turned out to be a profound eye-opener for me! If presented with the choice between meeting God or reading this book, I would unequivocally choose to delve into its pages. The narrative is so enthralling and thought-provoking that I can't recommend it enough. The author's talent shines brightly, making it a must-read for anyone seeking a truly enriching and enlightening literary experience."

These books are so fun! This one was a Dog Man adventure that used East of Eden and other Steinbeck novels as the theme. As a kid, you would have no idea, as an adult, it totally upped the humor quotient. Fun for kids and fun for adults too. And if you let your inner kid shine, the flip-o-rama complete with your own hilarious sound effects just adds to the joy.

Recommended for all of those imaginative kids out there young and old!
