Rate this book
Sometimes you search for peace and find war. Ira Beard has settled down to a peaceful life when war finds him. In 1860 civil war breaks out and he can't stand by. The war comes to California and Ira finds himself leading a small troop in search of rebels. Confederate raiders have been robbing gold shipments. Now he learns they're planning to pillage the San Francisco mint. His mission becomes more urgent when they take his wife as hostage. Colonel Beauregard P. Butler is a Southern patriot. At least he wants people to think so. He's hatched a scheme to steal California gold and ship it to Richmond. Of course he plans to keep some for expenses. He even gets a chance to rob the San Francisco mint. Meanwhile he takes Ira Beard's wife as hostage. But Beauregard is about to find out that Ira is not his worst enemy. That turns out to be a sweet Southern belle. Now read the book and travel to a time past, which haunts us yet today.

About the author

The author was born a long time ago. He spent three years in the US Army where he learned a lot of vital skills, such as how to use a soldering iron and screwdriver, as well as how to make the bed, mop the floor, and wash dishes. He grew up and spent most of his life in San Francisco. After obtaining a useless liberal arts degree, he became a social worker and did more than 20 years in the mean streets of New York City, San Francisco, and rural California.

He is now devoted to writing books, which he should have been doing in the first place. He has written some science fiction and fantasy, but is now mainly interested in tales of the Old West. Previous publications include The Terrorist Plot at Gopherville, Gold, A Tale of the California Gold Rush, Journey to Rhyolite and Chapel Perilous.
