Freya Einarsdodder had sailed along the Gray Coast as a hired sword for years, cutting out a living among the warring factions of the south. Fierce, strong and with a striking beauty she has always had to trust her instinct and her blade as she fought for her place in the world. When she heard rumors of a Norse captain looking to take on crew in the great city of Calderon, she was eager for the chance to sail once more with her own people. There was no way she could have known that she would end up on a longship, with a thief, a priest and the imposing Captain Wolfgeir. Now dangerous waters await them all, filled with foul creatures, vicious pirates, magic and a ruthless king who may have a score to settle with the captain and his crew. But what is more dangerous, the wary king, the monsters that surround them or the captain himself; a man driven to succeed, a man determined to pry wealth and glory from whoever or whatever gets in his way.

I always really enjoy books where there are strong female leads. For this book the author chose Freya as that character. She’s strong, feisty, determined, and brave beyond her years. When she joined her crew, she wasn’t sure what it would bring. She wanted to fight the good fight and to stand amongst other warriors that supported each other. They set out together into the sea to find a dragon on the rampage. Through their adventurous trip and incredible fights they learn what it takes to be a team, how to learn from each other and even find out what hidden stories are under them.
This is a fantastic sci-fi book that speaks to inner adventurer in the reader. Be prepared for a binge read with an extensive scene setting that peaks your interest. For me, this was a fun read.

Mythical creatures, great battles, and love. A great read.

Freya is not your typical girl. She is a fighter, a true warrior, one who can hold her own. But she had no idea what she was getting into when she joined up with a crew lead by the great Wolfgeir. The crew sets out on the sea towards the Mystic Isles to hunt a great sea dragon that is terrorizing ships. Little does Freya know that the captain has other intentions that will lead to several adventures where Freya would get a chance to prove herself as the amazing warrior she is. As the crew sails and fights together, they each learn more about themselves and what they really want in life then what they set out to find. In this mild sci-fi novel, you will not only have great battles, death-defying tricks, mythical creatures, a beautiful and strong leading lady, but also a little love story thrown in.

I have read sci-fi novels before that were so hard to follow with their "out there" parts and pieces, but Lost Heroes is not that. It is an easy story to follow, even if bits of the language are new and foreign. It is an exciting adventure on the open ocean fighting pirates and sea monsters, corrupt kings and past lives. It even reaches out to those who love a good romance or love sub plot. I really enjoyed this novel, more than I thought I would, and I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys science fiction or a good adventure. The only part of the book that throws me for a loop is the title.  Even by the end we have no idea who "The Warrior Edda" is, but it's still a great story. There is some language and adult content, so it is best suited for a slightly mature audience; not young readers. Teenage readers as well as older readers can enjoy Lost Heroes. Happy reading.

Lost Heroes started off with the birth of a child and a traditional ceremony that occurs directly after in some cultures. Then the book introduces Freya. Freya is more than just a beauty. Freya is strong, powerful, determined, and goes after what she wants. She shows that in her willingness to fight a man in order to get a place on a ship.
She doesn’t back down from anything and yet she has enough sensitivity within her to fall for Captain Wolfgeir. Freya never wanted to be treated as some fragile female who couldn’t handle herself. She would step forward and want to be a part of dangerous missions, like the rest of Wolfgeir’s crew. I was amused, and impressed with her willingness to give up things, such as her magical sword and future earnings, in order to join in on adventures with Wolfgeir’s small handpicked crews.
Freya, the Captain, Oliver, and Brodir, as well as others, faced tremendous battles/challenges. They had to face their fears and real threats on their lives. Admittedly a part of me initially found the story less than appealing, but it didn’t take long before I was cheering for Freya. Cheering on the men she had come to stand next to on both land and sea. The latter part of the book where she explored her femininity with some of her earnings was fantastic. I could almost see Wolfgeir’s face when she surprised him with her change in attire. Overall, this was a pretty good adventure book that touches on the importance of a woman not allowing the fact she is female prevent her from doing anything her heart desires. Even without that message, it’s a fun read.

This is an epic read, jam-packed with action and camaraderie – a book that’s both plot-driven and character-driven. I was caught up in the story from the first page, and couldn't stop reading. Lost Heroes is one adventure after another, with magic and humor, romance and mythology. The characters have a depth I found appealing, and Armenta has a real gift for timing, description and dialogue. I’m so glad there will be more books in the series so I can go back to Freya’s world!

Lost Heroes is a fun and thrilling read! Instantly, I was transported into this magical world. This book may be geared towards young adult readers but adults alike will be hooked on this book. I know I sure was. My nephews will have such an enjoyable time reading this book as I did. This includes Freya. She may be a female but she is a kick ass heroine. She earns and gets the respect of men. In fact, she is so strong that even Captain Wolfgeir had to give in and admit that she is a force to be reckoned with.

Speaking of Captain Wolfgeir. He is a reasonable person. Yet, don't underestimate him. He may not just into a battle as the first person but he commands attention when he speaks. Than there are the other characters. None of them felt like secondary or even played third string. Everyone had a voice that was distinct. There was not one character that I encountered and didn't like. The characters were not the only ones that were intriguing; there are all of the monsters that the gang encountered and battled along the way. I look forward to continuing this journey with Captain Wolfgeir, Freya, and the rest of the gang.

Freya Einarsdodder is a warrior and has spent many years fighting alongside and proving herself to the men she travels with. Then she hears of a Norse Captain Wolfgeir and wants to travel with her country men again. The set sail to The Mystic Isles and begin an adventure with pirates, monsters, and evil men.

Freya is a true warrior woman. She is not going to be looked at like some fragile waif. She will kick your butt up around your ears for doing so and I just love her for it. Freya joins a new crew and everyone has to work together to find how they best operate as one. And they will have plenty of hair raising adventures to find this out.

It was very easy to falling into this story and hard to put it down without knowing how the crews gets through that step of danger. This book has everything and it is the first in a series. I can’t wait to see what Jason Armenta has up his sleeve for the next book.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. I voluntarily chose to read and post an honest review.

A nicely crafted prologue drew me in and I thought it set the scene for a classic Viking tale. It was a surprise that it was more of a fantasy read with all the required components, a mythical sea dragon, a touch of romance and intrigue and strong fearless characters who triumph regardless of what surprises are thrown at them. The plot is clear, the quest filled with adventures. I like that Freya is a strong female lead in true Wonder Woman style, and when she says, 'I will not be some misty-eyed woman who fawns over you and chases after you like some weak-willed hound.' I thought, good for you.
