Landi, a marketing genius, gets her heart broken by her wife, Mak. In response, Landi dusts off a stack of un-redeemed love coupons and coerces Mak into finally fulfilling them. While Mak is busy redeeming coupons and possibly herself. Landi meets a beautiful, funny and kind woman named Pip.
Pip is a lawyer in a big downtown firm. She has a booming career, a nice car, a huge salary but comes home every night to an empty house. One night at a lesbian bar, her friend Molly bets a woman that she can't get Pip to kiss her. This interaction sparks Pip to add women to her online dating search. She becomes discouraged because they are missing something - they aren't Landi.
The end of May approaches when Mak has to redeem the last coupon during the annual HerRun. Is Landi ready to fall in love again? If so, will it be with Mak again or with Pip?
Michele M. Reynolds is the author of right books (Love Coupons, Thawing Hearts, Love's Autograph to name a few) .She is an outdoors enthusiast and has spent many years living in the wilderness. She has lived in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Florida, North Carolina, and Massachusetts. When she is not writing or reading, she spends time with her family members.
Its a thought provoking story that might sometimes irritate a few readers or not because it tells the painful story of a woman's choice in being married to a user that led to her overcoming her weakness to find her strength and also finding incredible triumph--its also her(Landi) hope that leads her away from their destructive relationship and onto a much better life where she might end up being happily ever after. In addition,Landi's journey in this book/storyline is also to discover the secrets of her wife's(Mak) bad behaviors/affairs then confront her own uncertain future which she then begins to peel back things of both their past lives--truths that force her to finally question even her own future. But with the help and support of all her friends & a potential lover who treated her like a 'real' woman should with respect--only then did she let her ex-wife go and say yes to her own desire to starting over anew.
So, I took a break around the 80% mark, but after a refresher and a look back at my notes, I was able to catch up and finish fairly quickly.
A big plus of this book is the humor. I highlighted many quotes, especially from Landi's dialogue or point of view. Her character was pretty fun. The soooo gay straight girl love interest was Pip, a caring, sporty lawyer.
Michele M. Reynolds impressed me with her storytelling wherein it felt pretty unconventional. Certainly not just any lesfic. I get the impression that this was a first person book based on the kind of odd internal dialogue and a few slip-ups that weren't replaced (yay, more editing). Didn't make it unreadable and I'm actually pleased because 3rd person is my preference.
Sadly, I wasn't jazzed about the main characters. The beginnings of their romance was pretty cute and at times steamy. However, the character known as Mak (ex-wife) sucked so bad and I had to suffer through Landi obsess over her for most of the book. Not a single thing about her was attractive, meaning I couldn't relate to Landi's plight. Yikes I started roasting her, so I stuck it in a spoiler. :) The whole story, I yelled at Landi like a movie, "Don't go back to her!"
And since the theme of Love Coupons hinged on an agreement with Mak, I couldn't escape her. Sad.
Honestly, this romance just wasn't my style. The chapters on the muddy course thing didn't amp me up the way they should've, which is why I normally try not to pick super physical/sporty content. Reynolds certainly has the talent. This one's just a miss for me.
4.5 stars. Despite it's flaws I really enjoyed this read. One of the best stories about moving on after your partner cheats and about finding a new love after that fact.
What can you do when you still love your cheating wife who's left you for another woman but you still have to work together? That's basically the main problem the story deals with and it does it well. The moving on part of the story is written extremely well and is presented in a fairly unique way so it was a refreshing read. There is some angst but the overall tone of the story didn't feel heavy. I'd say this is a pretty uplifting story in large part due to how Landi deals with all of it. Lots of good humor is used throughout the book to make the rather grim events more digestible. And some of the darker parts are completely skipped, ie we, the readers never get to see Mak actually cheating. It's a fact that happened before the book starts.
Both mains were great and distinctive. I really liked this pairing. Where the author failed was making Mak completely unlikable. Besides her work ethic which never is the focus of the story there's nothing good about her. She's rude, abusive, a complete jerk in general so it's not clear why Landi is so hung upon her for most of the book. I get that many years together can create an attachment but not that strong of an attachment for that kind of asshole. Author should've made Landi recall some of the good things about Mak to make it all more believable. But that's basically my only issue with the story.
This is a romance between two people operating under false assumptions with the tease of them getting together requiring the length of the book. There was no silly contrived drama, manufactured just to stir up emotions but something which felt, to me at least, like something that could actually happen.
Our main character, Landi, witnesses her absolutely disgusting asshat* of an eight-year wife having sex in the office where they both work. The asshat* is named Mak. Landi is leveled and garners all of our sympathy and encouragement as she rebuilds herself. Landi owns a high percentage of the company where she and her soon to be ex-asshat* work so she comes up with an agreement to soothe her ego and facilitate closure so they can continue to work together. We are introduced to Landi as she brokenly consults a divorce attorney, Pip. Pip we soon find out is a riot and funny, really funny as she deals with her sudden attraction to Landi. Pip becomes Landi's superhero being able to help her out in times of need as she ponders how to express her romantic interests. She has heard the warning from others to not be Landi's "rebound bi-sexual" and Landi has the warning of "don't fall for the straight girl".
I think the only mistake the author makes is the character of Mak, the ex, and that means everything about her. She IS a total asshat* and I never saw anything appealing about her and wondered why Landi still had any feelings for her. It sounded like Mak was a serial cheater and 'all take and no give' in the marriage but eight years together I guess is eight years. It's easy to judge this disgusting woman as I read about her on my laptop, no connection to the real world or anything.
Pip, the attorney is so absolutely, effortlessly marvelous and funny. I loved her character throughout the story. Landi makes mistakes, Pip does not.
This book is now one of my favorites - ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
*Asshat. I stole this term from Doreen as it is perfect and what I would've called her might have been offensive to some.
I enjoyed this book a lot. It's about how you can get over a betrayal and not die trying! Both characters, Landi and Pip, are chasing different things in life: the first wants to forget her horrible ex, and Pip gets the girl, Landi. The book is light and nice reading.
Love Coupons digs into lost, renewed and new relationships.
Landi and Mak are married. Landi and Mak work together. Mak moved out to be with her new lover and took everything that wasn't nailed down with her. Landi seeks legal advice from Pip about a divorce. Landi is thunderstruck and kind of a dope. Mak is a straight up asshat. Pip, the lawyer, wants Landi as more than a divorce client, but has lived her life as a straight woman.
Mak agrees to "do" the love coupons (the most generic and platonic 18 out of the 50 coupon set), just to keep her job at Landi's company. Her efforts fulfilling the coupons pinpoint all of her failures as a spouse and maybe even as a human being. Pip, the sexy and now bisexual lawyer, is throwing herself at Landi by way of flirty texts. Everyone keeps advising her to not be Landi's rebound relationship. She tries to stretch her new gay wings with the help of online dating. As Michele Reynolds insightfully writes, Pip found "being gay had turned her into a critic of online dating profiles, a cyberstalker, someone who yearned for an unavailable woman, someone who offered fictitious tickets to friends, and someone who couldn't sleep." This assembly of actors includes an asshat, a dumbass and a sweetly bumbling ass.
Love Coupons is a must read novel. I'm biased, because I love Michele Reynolds' writing. I know that there are others, but I've got seven of the author's books in my collection. My take away, from reading this laugh out loud novel, is if you don't love yourself when you are with someone, the odds are that they don't love you. Being in love should bring out the best in us and women are stronger together.
Apart from the rather unconventional plot of redeeming old love coupons so exes can be civil in their workplace (totally preposterous but it’s fiction so Kanye shrug), this book’s pettiness, banter, accuracy of portraying a self-absorbed passive aggressive insensitive douchebag Mak (it got real y’all), a toaster-oven bi-MC too sweet to be named Pip, and a heartsick MC, Landi, who struggles to overcome her inconceivable love for ex Makdouche, was an absolute treat!
This is a slow burn, fun romance with no major predictable conflict or break-up towards the end. Yay! 4.5 sterren rounded up to 5.
I really like Michele Reynolds books. At first I was skeptical to read this book because whenever a character has to "choose" their love there's almost always a moment...well at least one but mainlh more...where I hate said character. This wasnt really like that, at least not too extreme. It was a cute read with characters that are likable and an epilogue that will definitely make you smile
What an adorable romantic comedy!!! Mak was a perfect bad guy. Can't say anything else without spoilers. Landin and Pip's characters were so well developed and so endearing. Loved the story very much. Very well done!!!
I thought this was fantastic! It was a unique twist on a romance storyline. It was fast paced and I really enjoyed the author's writing style. I almost read this in one sitting! I just didn't want to stop. There was a point in the middle where things started dragging a little...but it didn't last long. This is a great read and even more so if you have Kindle Unlimited!
Initially I didn’t want to read this book since the description was about Landi hoping to win her cheating ex wife back. Not a huge fan of cheaters even fictional ones. Anyhow I’m glad I did read it Pip pip hooray.
