This is a book that my organization is already using to drive its strategic thinking so I picked it up to better understand the philosophy from our executive leadership team. Overall, I liked (and agreed) with the perspective that there is no "one way" to be innovative. If someone sells you a guaranteed formula, you're in for a ride. There were some clear takeaway ways to structure your thinking around innovation, types of innovation, innovation ecosystems that need to be created (rather than just one person with one great idea), ideas that have failed and why and metrics that would be helpful to track. Overall, I did get value from this book. I felt that Mehta did get a bit repetitive in using the same examples over and over. Perhaps 20% of the book could have been edited and trimmed. But, it was nicely paced with a easy to read style and tangible things to take back to work so I would consider it a successful read.

This short book, dry a sawdust, outlines brilliantly how a corporation can foster innovation. It dissects the aspects of corporate innovation. The analysis is a step by step description of how innovation works best in a corporation, and instructions on how to get there. If you are a corporate leader looking to foster innovation this is may be your bible. I can imagine executives with copies in their breast pockets or purses, available to consult their favorite passage to explain the decisions or organizational structure. But I am not a corporate leader, and for me this book focus so closely on the corporate environment that i found its lessons hard to apply, even as a thought problem, to the other environments in which I work. For me, this was a great breakfast at dinner time. It had great taste, but it missed the spot.

Recommend this book to anyone who like me, constantly struggle with transforming an organization into an innovative organization. Innovation is not about creating the next big thing. The next big thing probably already exists, but no one has recognized it. Innovation can we an enhancement to something that already exists; can be a reframing activity (as Peter Thiel), going from 0 to 1 (creating something new), or an experiential activity, by bringing new value to a customer with available technology (Uber, iPhone, Airbnb, Amazon). To transform an organization into an innovation hub it is required commitment from top to bottom within the organization and acknowledging that the path to success has many failures. Innovation cannot be restricted to certain groups or teams in an organization but needs to be a part of the cultural organization (pockets of innovation within an organization tend to deter innovation overall).

This book appeared to be great! It provides a good analysis, a structure, and a framework to build an innovative organization. Comparison with a biological system (biom) does really help to look at the innovations as a system.
