When a sharp knock echoes through the house, Charlie and Sophie Wood's lives are changed forever. Strangers appear with a forceful, violent wind that tears the curtains and shatters the windows. Narrowly escaping the attack with the help of a mysterious old man, Charlie and Sophie find themselves suddenly-impossibly-a part of the wind, soaring over the countryside.
On the run, the pair discover the world of Elementals-a wonderful, dangerous place, rich with nature and those who control it. They encounter enemies with the power to wield water, hurl jets of fire, shape the forest, and travel in the wind, as they learn that everyone, good and bad alike, are after their lives. With the help of the old man, a lot of training, and a little of their own cunning, Charlie and Sophie set out to clear their names-and save a world they didn't even know existed.
ELEMENTALS is a middle-grade fantasy story of family, adventure, deception, and the magic of nature.
Dan and Kristen Sheridan are the husband-wife author team of Elementals, their first novel. They live with their two-year-old son, Declan, in the beautiful Adirondacks of upstate New York.
I thought this book was just ok, I understand it’s a middle grade book, but I think things could have been better. There is one particular character in this book who is referred to by at least 5 names/titles, sometimes in the same paragraph. While I understand you might not always want to call him the same thing - referring to him as the old man, when there are 2 old men talking gets confusing sometimes. The book did leave off on a cliff hanger of an ending, but I don’t know if I care enough about the story or characters to continue reading when the sequel comes out.
With all that being said I did really like the abilities in this book. The characters with abilities are called elementals and they can control all the elements. I thought that was something different because characters that usually have super powers or abilities usually can only control fire or wind or 1 specific thing.
This was an easy read, and just under 200 pages. It’s not a terrible book - but with so many awesome middle grade books out there I don’t think this one makes the cut.
I heard the author read an excerpt from this book at the Glens Falls Chronicle Author Fair last November, and was intrigued by the premise, so I purchased a copy.
Elementals is a middle-grade fantasy set in a contemporary world, centering around Charlie and Sophie Wood, who discover they are Elementals, with the ability to control wind, earth, water, and fire. The community of Elementals is hidden from us mere mortals, and has become divided into opposing factions. Attacked by other Elementals, Charlie and Sophie are rescued by a mysterious old man. The pair quickly find themselves on the run as they try to come to grips with their powers. A dire prophecy and a conspiracy to overthrow the world of the Elementals take them deeper into peril, with only their own resourcefulness and newly minted skills to help them save themselves and their new-found world.
I was impressed with the quality of the world-building in this story. The magical system is well thought out and seems to be handled consistently. The stakes were high, and there were some twists I actually didn’t see coming. I found the ending a bit rushed and a little hard to follow at times, forcing me to go back and re-read a couple of sections, but overall this was a debut effort worthy of a read. The book ends on a definite cliffhanger that will leave MG readers itching to find out what happens in the next book.
In this world there are humans and there are elementals. Two children bridge the two. Good and evil battle as the children , part of a prophecy learn to control the 4 elements. There is, however a fifth element. What is the key?
I enjoyed this book on its own. As it progressed I got the feeling there would need to be more, and sure enough, the adventure continues in another book. If you enjoy young at heart stories you will likely enjoy this. I am guessing I'll give the next installment a try.
Possible spoilers? Definitely more of an elementary kids book to read. One thing I did like was the whole elemental world building and I would like to know more about the elemental's city. Does anyone know if/when a sequel to this book will be out? The main thing that I didn't like about this book was how they would refer to one person different names in the same paragraph. For example, they would call the two main characters' grandfather either grandfather or old man which got a bit confusing.
I liked the concept and fantasy idea. I would have rated it higher but for the grammatical errors that were in it. Case in point: on the next to last page is this sentence (in part): “mysteriously healed as the pulse of energy left he and Sophie.” I noticed 5 errors of case (as above) and one where the grandfather’s last name was “Woods,” while in other places in the book the name had been “Wood.” I hope the next book has fewer errors!
I won this through a goodreads&amazon giveaway. I liked the concept of traventing - being able to use the wind to travel. I liked the twist at the end. Quick read and a clean read. Looking forward to next book.
Goodreads giveaway— Excellent read for adolescent readers who like adventure and suspense. Great main characters and excitement. I - an adult reader- will be impatiently waiting for the rest of the series so I can see how this all plays out.
** editors really need to fix the grammatical errors throughout the book.
