So far this is my favorite Hope Callaghan book in my favorite of her series
So far this is my favorite Hope Callaghan book in my favorite of her series. I like the fact that Elvira got knocked down a few times for pulling some of her really dumb stunts, because Elvira deserves a few good lessons for the abusive way she treated people in all of the previous books that she appeared in. But I can see why the author wants to have Elvira available to do certain really stupid things that are helpful to move the plot along. Much better than having Autumn or Mercedes or Carlita do something that is stupid and out of character. Those three women are sometimes impulsive and are willing to take risks to help a friend or to keep a promise. But none of them would set the curtains in their apartment on fire with a blowtorch! So it can be useful to an author to have a recurring character (nearby but not central) that does something inexplicably stupid when there is nothing sensible that would uncover important information. I was also glad that Elvira was able to give Carlita a helpful hint about searching that can tip Carlita, Mercedes, and Autumn off that in spite of their success so far, the three of them are still amateurs, and even Tony and Vinnie Jr still have a somewhat limited field of professional experience and expertise. I hope that this turns into a long series. I like the characters and the settings. The quality of the writing is better than many modern authors and is steadily improving. I am a fairly tough critic of writing style compared to many Amazon readers. Even so, at the rate that this author is improving, I expect that I will soon be leaving some five stars reviews of her new books, particularly in this series. My own writing is rarely good enough that I would give myself a five stars review, but I am not setting impossibly high standards. There are other reviewers who set similar standards, and I really value their reviews when I am thinking about buying a book rather than reading it on Kindle Unlimited.
I search for this author's books to read, and have bought a a few when the price is right, but would not have read nearly as many if I had to buy them all. But soon I will probably start buying them, as well as giving them five stars reviews. Since I read several hundred books a year, I am picky about which ones I buy. But this series by this author is getting very close to good enough!
Merry Masquerade in Savannah is the eighth book in Hope Callaghan’s awesome Made in Savannah Cozy Mystery Series. The storyline is well plotted, the characters are well developed and relatable, and the plot is complex. Twists and turns, and suspects abound in this fast-paced book and I was completely at a loss as to the identity of the murderer until the final reveal. The writing style flows smoothly and this is an easy read, which doesn’t contain any gratuitous sex, graphic violence, or adult language. Once again, Ms. Callaghan has written a well thought out and interesting mystery, with a great story line, affable characters, and humor. I highly recommend all Ms. Callaghan’s books to anyone who enjoys reading well-crafted cozy mysteries.
Thanksgiving is just around the corner, but Carlita Garlucci isn’t looking forward to the holiday because this will be her first major holiday since her husband, Vinnie, had passed away. Two of her sons, Paulie and Vinnie, Jr., will be spending the holiday in New York. Her other two children who live in Savannah, Mercedes and Tony, and know it will be difficult for their mother, suggest they forego their usual celebration and eat out. Victoria “Tori” Montgomery invited Carlita to Montgomery Hall on Tybee Island under the guise of wanting to discuss her upcoming holiday party, but Carlita senses there’s more on Tori’s mind. Tori recently sold a couple gems to a pawnshop in Hilton Head, South Carolina and the next day, her front gate was damaged, her home broken into, some antique weaponry was stolen, and Byron, her butler was assaulted. She thinks there’s a connection and asks if Tony could look into it for her. Everyone is looking forward to attending Tori’s Merry Masquerade Holiday Party, but the murder of one of the staff, Ava Torrez, casts a shadow on the event. Elvira and her sister, Dernice, who recently arrived in town, have formed another company, EC Security Services, which just happens to have been hired to help with crowd control and ensure the guests’ safety during Tori’s party. At Tori’s request, Carlita and Mercedes agree to stay at Montgomery Hall for a couple days to investigate the murder.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
Carlita Garlucci and her adult children are facing their first holiday season without her husband Vinnie and despite their recent adventures in their new hometown, the holidays only highlight how much Vinnie is missing in their lives. While helping a friend investigate a theft at her estate Carlita and Daughter Mercedes get pulled into yet another murder mystery when a body is discovered during a formal holiday masquerade ball.
This series offers an eclectic mix of zany characters and this book is no exception; from a high society dame with mystery on her hands and house full of loyal or maybe not so loyal employees, a nosy personal security “expert” with an ex-con sister and a penchant for floodlights, to a young girl with the charm and innocence to melt the heart of a staid old butler. There is no lack of suspects and plenty of twists as the investigations wind their way through back alleys, a supposed haunted house, and a mild hurricane. What comes out at the end is a mix of fun and old-fashioned murder mystery.
Carlita and Mercedes get to go to a formal masked party ball.
Carlita and Mercedes are invited to a masked ball where a member of the kitchen staff ends up murdered. Carlita and Mercedes and Victoria get together at the grand home of Victoria to round up suspects and investigate who might have killed the poor girl in the pool house. Lots of suspects, plus 200 people that were at the party plus the pest, Elvira are among the ones to be crossed off the suspect list. A Cat 1 hurricane was not able to stop Carlita and Mercedes with their quest to find the murderer.
As always, I am thoroughly enjoying this series. In spite of a robbery and an assult on her butler, Victoria Montgomery was throwing a masked ball and she had invited Carlita and her entire family including Autumn, Shelby and Violet. During the ball, the body of one of her employees was found in the pool house. As it would appear to be an inside job, Tori asked Carlita and Mercedes to stay at her mansion to see if they could all find out who had committed the murder.
The story was cute but somethings were just silly. Who would entertain in a room that is glass during a hurricane.? Hurricane predictions and fear last for days not for a few hours, and if there is a murder on your property during the party I’m pretty sure that the police would not let your party continue. Additionally, if your property is stolen as part of a crime you get it back you don’t have to purchase it.
Carlita and Mercedes attend a friend's ball and a body is found in her pool house. Tori, Carlita and Mercedes investigate.....and in spite of being her usual pain in their derrieres, Elvira finds a clue that helps confirm the suspect the trio reported to the police
This is a well written story with a terrific plot. Mercedes and Carlita get pulled in to help find a murderer to help a friend. The clues are slow coming. I love this series and am really looking forward to the next story. Thank you, Hope, for an exceptionally good read.
Merry Masquerade in Savannah is another great adventure with the Garlucci family. This time they are summoned to the home of Victoria Montgomery to help solve a mystery. If you like cozy mysteries you will love this book. Hope Callaghan is a wonderful writer who has a talent for cozy mysteries.
Carlita Garlucci and her daughter are invited to the Tori Montgomery mansion for a Merry Masquerade party where the body of one of the servants was found in the pool house. They were invited to come and stay in the mansion to help solve the murder during a big storm hitting Savannah. Carlita's ex renter Elvira was hired and involved as the EC Security Service.
I loved the book, but had one problem with it. There was a hurricane in December. If you live on the east coast and specifically in South Georgia, you know hurricanes rarely happen later than September and never in December. Other than this detail, I loved it, just like I loved the 6 previous books!
Another great mystery. This mystery involved Tori Montgomery and her staff. She was having a Masquerade Ball, her first one on a long time. Ava, one of her workers on the Etta was killed. Now, to solve the mystery, Mercedes and her mother team up with Tori. Enjoy.
I love Hope Callaghan's books these Savannah books are the bomb. I gave five star rating because this cosy mystery is really interesting and I would love to go to a masquerade. So grab a cup of tea and get lost in this intriguing mystery.
Hope does it sensationally! The characters she creates and grows are fantastic. The location of Savannah and surrounding areas are fun. Twists and turns to keep you reading.
Another great story with great detail and surroundings. I didn't have a clue who the guilty person was. Romance, elegance , and mystery. All clean and no curse words which is a big plus.
Sorry, but I did not enjoy this. The average review was very high, which is why I bought it, but the plot was underdeveloped as were the characters. I hate giving low reviews because I know I could not write a book (I've tried). Sorry.
Reading about Carlita’s and Mercedes' adventures in Savannah have been exciting and fun! I like how Tori's Montgomery Hall was unveiled more in this one. The suspense of whodunit was a joy ride to the end!
This is a book full of quirky characters and a fun mystery to be solved. I love the description of the manor, sorry no spoiler here. As always this is a nice addition to my Cozy Mystery library and with a bonus recipe.
I love this series! Each book gets better and better. Wonderful, realistic characters and interesting story line. I was hooked from the first page. I can't wait to read the next book!
Good easy fun mystery read! I enjoy all the characters even Elivra; sheis better now she is not Carlita's tenant. The exclusive Mrs. Montgomery "Torri" and her her household are a delight now that the stuffiness is removed.
The holidays are here with a masquerade ball. Then comes a murder. Then the ladies are investigating, the cops make an arrest but do they have the murderer.
I love this series. This book was creative, whitty, and entertaining. As usual, I did not figure out the mystery. Looking forward to the next book when it is released!
