Одним осенним днём лев нашел в своем саду раненую птичку. Пока он перевязывал ей крыло, стая улетела в теплые края, и лев предложил птичке перезимовать у него. Это стало началом прекрасной дружбы.

It took me two minutes to read it and another two minutes to stop crying. Then I read it to my husband who had the exact same reaction. We're such saps.

I teared up while reading this-- "Sometimes life is like that." A delicate and joyful exploration of friendship and the limits of human connections. How we must love people on their own terms, and let them go when they need to go.

Because maybe then they will come back.

This was a relatively long (64 pages!), for young children that is, mostly picture story about two unlikely friends. I wasn't sure my two-year-old grandson would sit through this, but he was the perfect audience. The lion helps a hurt bird which has been left behind by the rest of the population migrating south for the winter. They spend a quiet loving winter together but when spring comes, the bird leaves to join his own. Summer passes and as fall comes the lion watches the line of birds flying south remembering his friend in sadness. What happens? Soothing touching story.

A beautiful book. Such a tender story of caring, kindness, and love. The pace of the story is peaceful and warm like a hug. So much to ponder on each page - even if it was a white page blanketed with snow, my daughter and I would linger for a moment and chat about what the characters might be feeling. Love that my daughter will not think a friendship between a lion and a bird is an unlikely one.

When a little bird falls injured at his feet, Lion bandages his wing and takes him in when his flock heads south for the winter. Together the leonine/avian pair spend the cold months together, daily becoming better friends. But when the spring arrives and the bird's flock returns, Lion knows he must bid his friend adieu. After passing a quiet summer and fall on his own, Lion is delighted when Bird returns for another winter together...

Originally published in Canada as Le lion et l'oiseau, this lovely picture-book was translated into English by the wonderful Brooklyn-based Enchanted Lion Books, which specializes in presenting foreign-language children's books to English-speaking children. The story is spare but affecting, capturing in its brief text the emotional life of Lion, who discovers the pleasures of companionship, only to be (temporarily) deprived of his companion. His joy, when the bird returns, is keenly felt by the reader. Marianne Dubuc's artwork in The Lion and the Bird is every bit as affecting as her text, with a judicious mix of full-page color spreads, and color illustrations on a white background. One or two spreads consist of mostly white pages with a single visual element - a crocus just blooming, a single note - that draws the reader/peruser's attention to forthcoming narrative developments, be it the coming of spring or the return of the bird. An immensely accomplished example of the picture-book, with text and illustration working seamlessly together, this is a book I would wholeheartedly recommend, to anyone looking for children's stories about friendship, or about the seasons, as well as to anyone who appreciates beautifully illustrated examples of the genre.

Magnifique livre et très touchant. Peu de mots ce qui me permet de m’exercer à narrer l’histoire et décrire les images avec des phrases comme « oiseau bobo » « lion dodo » « le feu! »

Utter bliss to discover. I read this whilst in a room full of people, but this book instantly transported me to a safe space, on my own, in a cosy corner with a blanket, a warm mug and this wonderful read.
A tender tale of unlikely friendships, the ebb and flow of instincts, loneliness, kindness, hope, holding close and letting go. The feel, the look, the colours and content of this book reach right into your soul and down to your toes. Its gentle nature of touching on so many topics and emotions allows its reader to really drink everything in and enjoy, question and hope just as the characters do.
A wonderful book for exploring seasons, friendships, emotions, acts of kindness, migration patterns, differences and understanding with any age.
Beautiful, touching and calm-inducing. Thank you, Marianne Dubuc!

I really enjoyed this beautiful picturebook. The sketched colour pencil illustrations really humble the reader. They are beautiful yet may resonate with drawings pupils achieve themselves as colouring pencils are an artist tool that is readily available to them.

This unlikely friendship between Lion and Bird forms when the bird falls from flight with a damaged wing. As a good Samaritan, the lion helps them by bandaging them up and keeping them safe and warm, creating a strong friendship bond. This friendship bond could teach children about being friends, however unlikely the pairing.

During the warm weather the other birds came back, and the bird left lion. This would teach children about letting things go, looking at what is good for others, rather than selfishly stopping others from flourishing. Loss is also key to this moment in the book, as pupils may experience a range of loss in their childhood, and this would facilitate talk on the feelings involved. It also shows the character enjoying life afterwards which is a positive message. This is also shown in character's body language, as you can tell how they are feeling just from the pictures, whether it was the upset and loneliness or the happiness and independence. This would be an interesting topic to discuss.

A lovely book about a lion living on their own until one day a bird flies down from its migrating flock after being injured. All throughout the seasons, these two main characters become close eating, sleeping and spending every minute of the day together. Eventually the birds flock flies back home to which it joins, leaving the lion on their own once again. The lion eventually learns to be on their own, until one day he sees the flock migrating again and he just hopes to see his friend again, which to his surprise he does. The story ends when the lion and the bird spend another long winter together.

I love the illustrations within this book and the use of blank pages with a sometimes a single image on them to indicate the importance of that image. Would recommend.

I really enjoyed this book and seeing how caring the Lion was. The evolution of the lion and the birds friendship was beautiful to read about. I liked how some pages didn't even have any words or had very few words but instead the illustrations told the story - this could be good in a lesson to discuss with children what they think is happening on each page of the book and why they think that. I felt sad when the bird left with his flock and was so happy at the end of the book when he returned to stay with the lion over the cold months to keep warm. This is a lovely story and i will definitely be getting a copy for my own bookshelf and future classroom.

This is a beautiful story book of kindness, love and what it means to care for one another. The illustrations tell the story superbly and provide the reader with more to thing about than what is explicitly written. As well as being fantastic for showing the interdependence of friendship, this story conveys the importance of 'letting go'.

When a big-hearted lion finds a wounded bird on the ground, he patches the little creature up and offers his home as a place to stay during the colder months. The little bird can't fly, and the other birds migrate. A series of illustrations show how time passes and the two become fast friends. Eventually, though, the bird heals, and is strong enough to migrate when the time comes. The lion is sad and lonely but understands that this is the way of life. When fall arrives once again, though, his bird friend returns with plans to spend the winter together. This one tugs gently at the heart with its characters and messages about friendship.

I think that Dubuc must have some kind of friend in the paper industry that she needs to prop up. This book is way too long for what it is. Why a lion? Living in a house? Is there any kind of rationale? I guess maybe she just liked to draw a lion.

The Lion and the Bird tells the heart-warming story of a friendship that develops after the Lion nurses the Bird back to full health. On an autumn day, the Lion spots the injured Bird whilst gardening. He notices that his flock have flown on and left him behind, so he takes him in and lets him stay with him. Autumn turns to winter and they do many things together, such as sledging, fishing and reading by the fireplace. Then spring comes around and so do the flock that Bird flies with. The story becomes a heart-breaking one of letting someone you love go. The Lion goes back to his life of doing things by himself, but everything seems sadder and lonelier without Bird. Autumn comes back and the Lion hopes Bird will too. When the flock flies past, Lion notices Bird in the trees and takes him in again for the winter season.

Marianne Dubuc’s illustrations are so effective at showing the range of emotions that the characters experience. One of the most effective is the white double page spread with Lion, standing alone, in the bottom right-hand corner. His smaller figure from the pages before suggests that he is even more isolated and alone that he has previously been. The plain white pages around him emphasise this point because there is nothing but the Lion to look at.

The use of plain white pages is also very effective at showing the passing of time. For example, when the seasons change, there are 2 blank pages, with no illustrations. This emphasises how long the change takes, because there is more time between each illustration, forcing us to pause between the events of the story. I like the use of blank pages because it is more effective, for me, than it would be to show this change in time through illustrations alone. Instead, the blank pages emphasise the illustrations that follow.

I would use this book in schools, with Lower Key Stage 2 and use it to emphasise the power of illustrations and the possible positive relationship between them and words.

Overall, this is a really great text with lots of details to unpick about the characters and their experiences. I would definitely recommend reading this.
