I wish I could break down this review into two sections. I would give it 5 stars for the story. It hooked me, and Tova's heart was poured out on every page of this book. I was rooting for her every step of the way. I kept reading to see how God would give her the children she so wanted. Her story will blow you away.
I would give it 3 stars, though, for the writing. As a writer myself, I found myself wanting to jump in and edit. Tova begins to feel so much like a friend, I envisioned myself calling her up and offering my services. There was lots of repetitive language and places where I know there was a better way of capturing the moment than "a moment I will never forget." There were misplaced apostrophes and such. Nothing that a good editor couldn't have remedied.
Her voice reminds me of Glennon Melton. *SPOILER* And in the epilogue when she tells us that she and her husband were divorcing, I had the same incredulous response that I had when I found out Glennon and Craig were divorcing after I read Love Warrior. In both instances, I turned to my husband and cried, "I can't believe they aren't going to make it after all they went through together!" In both Borrowed Courage and Love Warrior, we walk through fire with these couples who are fighting for their families. Both couples make it through the fire but then they go up in smoke—inexplicably to the readers. Maybe Tova's next book will help us understand her next chapter and how a relationship can sustain the unthinkable (death of multiple children) and then crumble. Tova, if you're reading this, let's talk about editing for the next book!
This book will make you ugly cry. If you are not empathetic you will be after reading this story. God's hope shines so bright in this story and the glory is given to Him.
