After an onslaught of simultaneous, worldwide earthquakes ravages the Earth, a team is sent to explore a crevice that may go down farther than man has ever been able to go. Dr. William Roth is a brilliant scientist. A successful geophysicist. A prominent atheist. An alcoholic with a scarred past. When he is tasked with leading a team of 7 people on a mission that will take them deep into the Earth, he jumps at the opportunity. Millions have died around the world, the planet is in mourning. This could be the light, the hope that the world needs, and he would be leading it. According to the Bible, from the beginning of history until the ascension of Christ, both Heaven and Hell were located at the center of the Earth. When Christ ascended He took heaven and all those in it up to the atmospheric heavens where it has been ever since. But Hell remained. A probe is sent down into the crevice and when it sends back bizarre data, the team is formed. They land at the center of the earth to witness incredible things, but the mission soon takes a drastic turn. They encounter unimaginable evil as they walk into Hell itself. The mission quickly turns from a quest to find answers to earthquakes, into a quest to find answers to life and death. What happens after we die? Are there truly lavish rewards or grave consequences for the decisions we make in this life? Their journey will answer these questions. But will all of them survive the evil they encounter? And will the world believe them when they return?

A series of earthquakes around the world opens up a huge chasm in Russia where early readings find that it reaches all the way to the center of the earth. A team is sent in to find out what is there.
What if it is not what they have always been taught? What if hell was real....?

I really enjoyed the premise for this one, as I don't think I have ever read anything else like it.
It is written from a Christian perspective, but I still recommend it for everyone.

Wow! I loved this book. What a great original read. An earthquake so large it causes damage worldwide. It opens a hole in the earth so large and deep that it reaches the center of the earth. Probes are sent down and a team is formed to go down and see if the probes have really sent the correct information. What they find will blow your mind. It is extremely intense and I couldn't quit reading. I felt I knew all the characters well. I highly recommend this book.

Journey to the center of the Earth...

No spoilers: 4 1/2 stars. Some time in the near future a colossal earthquake hits; its epicenter is in Russia...

The resulting fissure penetrates to Earth's core... a team of scientists are dropped into the chasm by a lander, then use an ATV they named Denise...

...to explore and determine why Earth's center is hollow and not molten magma as once believed... They soon find out that wide is the gate and broad is the path that leads to destruction...

This was a sobering, well-written "Dante's Inferno" style look at Hades. The frightening aspect is that Hades is only the way station to the final judgement and being thrown into Hell proper...

It helps to have some knowledge of the Bible but is not necessary to read and understand the story and the moral conveyed. Kudos to this unknown author for successfully taking on such a difficult storyline.

Twist together Frank Peretti's theological supernatural novels, Dante's Inferno and Jonathan Edwards' "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God," and maybe a little Stephen King...and get ready to descend into Hades Proper. Rainwater's narrative flows well, and the pace rolls along quick.

Excellent read, topics covered very well. Refreshing change from a space
based science fiction story. I haven't seen too many center of the earth stories. The religious themes were handled well not overwhelming.

I'm always intrigued by a premise such as this, something spectacular happening with the Earth, and the suspense of discovery behind the events. Your typical doomsday scenario. Most books exploring this dystopian genre rely heavily on scientific hooks, political influence, and personal adventure to take the story forward, while exploring life's metaphors only as an afterthought. This book, however, deals with the religious concept of Heaven and Hell as it’s main plot. It made for an interesting read, with almost all scenes having a Hollywood style feel to it. The story progresses at a steady pace, without any loose narrations, rantings or musings. The sequence of events are interesting, the characters are relatable, and the concept of actual hell beneath our feet although not new, but dealt with aplomb. The story doesn’t feel very new, and feels like a mix of Hollywood's best hits - Sci-Fi, Horror and Religion. The narration is what makes it an interesting read, and is definitely a highlight! Even though you can predict with some certainty about what’s coming next, the narration keeps you bound to the pages, and to the edge of your seat, hoping the characters are safe as you turn the pages. This is a reward in itself for choosing to read this book.
All isn’t well though. I particularly found the science and technology details lacking depth, as the story is about earthquakes for about 20% of the book, but there is no mention of “Richter scale” even once. All magnitudes of earthquakes are just numerals without a unit. Not only that, almost all science references go without details, and the characters, almost all scientists, lack depth. The book, then, is heavily tilted to a religion genre. But here too, the description of Hell is a bit confusing at times and seems rushed, in the interest of pace, i suppose. The various aspects of hell shown to us lack religious references, and seem more of random fantasy, than a structured study or thought. The description of the immediate environment of the characters seems a bit incomplete at times, even the locations of where the characters are, feel random and without a reference point, and you are left with quite a lot to imagine. There are certain developments which do not have an explanation too. There are sparks of brilliance at certain places, where the author could have more to explore on the subject of Hell, but somehow feels restrained.
Overall, I would say it’s a good read if like a good paced novel, with a good narrative, and a reminder of how you ought to feel in Hell. The book does a good job of making you feel the heat!

Amazing story!

I love stories about archeologists and archeology.
The spirit world comes alive in Hades Proper. An atheist archeologist learns the meaning of life after journeying to the center of the earth when a worldwide earthquake opens an enormous crack in the Earth's surface that reaches to the planet's core.

Great read. Fast paced and an intriguing look into the afterlife.

Creepy Good! The reality of Hell is probably more unspeakable than we could imagine, but i applaud Rainwater for telling the tale in Hades Proper. I hope plenty of others will read it and consider things deeply enough to ask hard questions and find peace.

Well it’s 2am now !

This was a really great read. Not just a great read but also a great message. Although it is fiction it is also steeped in much truth. I could not put it down and now it is 2am. So good night.

Good and evil

It started out as a journey to the center of the earth, which bummed me out at first. Then it went into good and evil. I would recommend this book for teens on up. A very good read.

What if?

It's been a week since I read this book. I couldn't make up my mind what to say, I still don't know. So to keep from putting it off any longer, which I hate to do, here goes. This was a very intense read. It was a great adventure, of course, but still intense. Heaven or hell, good or bad, angels or demons... Nobody cares, nobody believes anymore! I do.
