Polo Springs, Florida, already beset by a hurricane, is overrun by iguanas! Will anyone survive?

Hunter Shea is one of my favorite authors so this one was a no-brainer when I saw it on Netgalley. If it wasn't so short, I probably wouldn't have finished it.

It may be that I've read too many Hunter Shea books or I'm suffering from creature feature fatigue but I was pretty underwhelmed by this one. The first thing that made me roll my eyes was the mayor, an eighteen year old girl. I'm sure there are some eighteen year old girls out there that could run a small Florida town but I don't think a book about ravenous iguanas of unusual size rampaging a town is a good place for one. I didn't really care about Don, Barbara, and their kid, or the mobster in exile. The lesbian couple, Cheryl and Nicole, were easily my favorite characters. I found them way more interesting and likeable than the rest of the cast.

The action picked up in the second half but niggling things about the first half hampered my enjoyment. People made stupid decisions to advance the plot and the prose was a little on the lazy side of things. The action and the gore kept this from being a one. Surprisingly, I did not get tired of descriptions of lizards gnawing on people.

And that's that. I think I'm going on a creature feature break for a while. Two out of five stars.

The quiet town of Polo Springs, Florida, (It's where you go to die!), is about to suffer from an invasion the likes of which it has never seen. Hurricanes? No problem! Climate change? No worries! Giant Iguanas? What the..what???

That's right, lizards! At first they're cute and remind you of those television commercials. Then, they seem to be larger than your average geckos. Then, they seem like they must be on steroids or something. And then? Then, they are bigger than your car and threatening to destroy your house! Will the people of Polo Springs survive? You'll have to read this novella to find out!

Hunter Shea is the man when it comes to fun creature features. That's all there is to it. There's no shame in serving up fine horror cheese, (and this is cheesy, have no doubt), because, let's face it - sometimes we are just in the mood for some chasing and chomping! What creature is doing the dining? Who cares? Who's getting eaten? Perhaps some of us like to substitute certain members of our families or co-workers for the actual characters... what? Who said that? Anyway, pretty much everyone is getting eaten and that's what's fun about it! There's no fake, drippy sentimentality here. Everyone is fair game.

Once again, I came away from this creature feature interlude totally entertained and with another story to tell my friends. "I just read this great book about..."

Highly recommended for fans of creature feature FUN!

WOW!!! This was a great book and it is loaded with so much action, I thought I was in the middle of a movie!

Backstory:

Small town of Polo Springs, Florida, have endured all kinds of things together. When an oil rig out in the Gulf of Mexico is shut down from some earth eco activists, the town of Polo Springs becomes a sight seeing place for little green lizards. Not just a few lizards, but a plague of lizards that start spewing up from the earth itself.

The citizens of the town try to get the lizards under control, but when Hurricane Ramona comes barreling through, tiny green lizards is the least of their worries. Giant lizards start showing up and all hell breaks loose!

Thoughts!

The focus of the book is also centered around certain families that try to make it through the craziness of the lizard invasion. It is very easy to get attached to all the characters in this book as they try to control the situation.

This book introduced me to the work of author, Hunter Shea and everything that I have read by him since has been great! Giving this one five "Action Packed" stars!

Polo Springs, Florida....population 317 human. Little green iguanas....a zillion.

Newly elected Mayor Anna Hickok is only 18 and has her hands full with numerous complaints about lizards, but they'll be dealt with later....after everyone battens down for Hurricane Ramona.

Poor homeless Frank, hungry, tired, filthy....and on the run from New York has no place to go or hide so he roams the town....and sewers....getting into trouble while cracking wise along the way. As the weather turns volatile and creatures wreak havoc, Frank helps a few town folk here and there while struggling to stay alive himself.

Then all hell breaks loose....and panic ensues....as Dino-Lizards make their appearance leaving catastrophic death and destruction in their wake.

JURASSIC FLORIDA is a fast-moving action-packed novella perfect for creature-feature and horror fans who know what to expect going in and get it with a bit of old time fun! Lots of ewww....icky....and good cheesy moments!

Definitely plan to read more of Hunter Shea....like his upcoming work CREATURE!

I love B-movies...especially monster flicks. Godzilla, The Blob, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Sharknado......any cheesy movie with a deadly beastie in it, and I'm willing to watch. I think this applies to books as well because the minute I saw the title and cover art for this book, I put in a review request immediately. Giant lizards. Awesome!

The basics: Green iguanas begin popping up out of holes in Polo Springs, FL. The lizard problem is really starting to annoy the residents of the little town. But little do they know, those lizards are just babies......the big lizards are the ones they have to worry about. Well, that and the hurricane that's coming. Just as the storm hits, the town is attacked by giant, angry lizards. Will anyone survive?

This book is a short, easy read. It's definitely the book version of a B-movie....not long on plot and some cheesy action scenes, along with plenty of gratuitous gore. This book is brain candy -- something you read just for the entertainment value. I enjoyed it. It's nothing fancy, but it did entertain me. Fun, quick read....nice way to spend part of afternoon. The cover art is awesome! Reminds me of classic monster movie posters! :)

Hunter Shea has written other similar books including The Montauk Monster and The Jersey Devil. I enjoyed this lizard-filled adventure. I'm definitely going to check out more of Hunter Shea's books!

You know those old monster b-movies from the 80s and 90s with giant crocodiles, snakes, spiders and whatnot? Hunter Shea writes stories in exactly that vein.

Ever been to Florida? Supposedly, it's where people go to die. And it has never been more true than during hurricane season or in this book. *lol*
An oil spill and massive quakes from an environmentalist group's terror attack stir something deep underground, plunging what must be one of the smallest towns ever into turmoil.

A hurricane cutting everyone off from the rest of the world, lizards of all sizes eating people and smashing houses ... and that ending! BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Don't look for deep thoughts or even a coherent story. There be monsters and they bring gorey fun with them!

Jurassic, Florida by Hunter Shea is a book I requested from NetGalley and the review is voluntary. It is a hoot! I can picture this as the next hot B movie like Sharnado or Tremors! It has suspense but just enough silliness to be fun. I loved it! Action, adventure, lizards everywhere! A good brain break to enjoy a good dino/horror book, yeah, it works for me! LOL

I went into this expecting low quality, high quantity carnage, and really couldn't complain at all.

Polo Springs, Florida, has a lizard problem. Naturally, there's a massive storm on the way to complicate the problem. Who will make it through alive?!

Man, was this FUN. I love lizards. I love mayhem. I love crazy animal rampages. I don't really like people. So I guess this just ticked all the boxes!

There are a variety of characters grouped into different viewpoints, meaning there are plenty of options for lizard chow. There was enough to the characters for me to get a feel for them, but I was happy to never get too attached to them, either. Yes, it's possible I have some latent psychopathic tendencies. *shrugs*

The writing was clearer and far more descriptive and indulgent than I was expecting from this short little rampage, which was an added bonus. This is a talented writer having a lot of fun, and there is still a coherent story to latch onto. I really enjoyed the writing more than I expected to, so I'll definitely read more from this author.

Overall, it was just a fun crazy romp. There were some parts where it was almost too fast for me to catch what was happening, and it did end rather abruptly, but I still had a lot of fun reading it.

JURASSIC, FLORIDA, is Hunter Shea's latest "creature-feature" novella with a Nature-Gone-Wrong theme. If you're looking for a unique animal turned homicidal, with plenty of non-stop action and gory scenes, then this story has you covered!

"FLORIDA. IT'S WHERE YOU GO TO DIE."

In the small town of Polo Springs, on Florida's Gulf Coast--population just over 300--things are going wrong all at once. After an oil-rig disaster launched by a group ironically claiming to want to "save the earth", small iguanas seem to be popping up from everywhere.

". . . The ecosystem was off its game, and the little critters were in a kind of freakout . . . "

If the residents were surprised about the amount of damage some adolescent lizards could cause, they were about to be astonished even further. Led by Ann, the teenaged elected Mayor, townspeople are encouraged to seek shelter in another town while yet another force--Hurricane Ramona--was set to cross over them.

Of course, these are Floridians--they've handled hurricanes before, and nothing could persuade them to leave their homes.

". . . the iguanas . . . seen so far are basically babies. Somewhere, there are a whole lot of adults making those babies . . . "

Shea gives us a very diverse group of characters here, and it was very easy to differentiate between each of them. We have Don, the family man, with his wife and son; Ann, the young town mayor; Sam, a retiree friend of Don's; Nicole and her girlfriend, Cheryl; Frank, a New York "small-time mobster", hiding out in the least likely of locations; and of course, the entire small town that exists as the backdrop to these "forces of nature".

". . . Normally straight-laced, timid people could morph into crazed killers if certain triggers were pulled . . . "

Some of the characters felt more "real" to me than others: Nicole and Cheryl, and Mayor Ann were my personal favorites, with our New York mobster bringing in the "comic relief". However, in a book like this, the ACTION is the prime driving force. This is an area Shea never disappoints in. The story slams home with scene after disastrous scene of bloody carnage, feeding frenzies, and plenty of gore to keep you turning those pages. In JURASSIC, FLORIDA, there is simply no "good" place to pause in the reading.

"Just run very fast and keep your mouth closed . . . they have a tendency to stick like glue and crawl all over you. Any opening to them is a place to explore."

Shea is one of those authors that you can't go wrong with when to comes to "creature-feature" books where the momentum just continues to build up until those final pages. However, he gives his readers the added bonus of characters that you will actually remember during all of the adrenaline-fueled devastation being wrought.

" . . . What the hell did the dinosaur throwbacks down here have against New Yorkers?"

Overall, JURASSIC, FLORIDA delivers with continuous pulse-pounding action, a "different" form of threat to humanity, and some memorable characters. The only thing I deducted for that I felt cold have been more comprehensive, was the ultimate ending. After all of the build up, it felt somewhat rushed and I, personally, would have liked a more elaborate conclusion.

". . . what you've got out here . . . ain't no typical five-footer. No sir, you have something else entirely . . . "

JURASSIC , FLORIDA is the first installment in Hunter Shea's "One Size Eats All" series.

Highly recommended!

One thing you ought to know: If you're interested in this kind of book, you're probably a twisted little creature, yourself.

MONSTER MOVIE MADNESS!!!

Rules:

Don't get attached to anyone. They're probably going to become lizard chow.

Outrageous character setups. If you're not peeved at the characters for one reason or another, you're not paying attention. They're soon about to become lizard chow.

You must love blood, guts, conflagrations, oil slicks, and hungry iguanas.

Welcome to Florida -- the place where you go to die. :)

I devoured this book in one day (pun intended) and had tons of fun while doing it. Shea has a way with creatures and someone in Hollywood, pay attention and option some of these for movies. Especially summer creature-features!

So the town of Polo Springs has a problem and while they initially just think they are being overrun by small lizards, they soon learn they have a giant problem- a giant iguana problem. Add to it a hurricane on the way and a pretty competent 18 year-year-old mayor trying to save the town and you have a fun romp called "Jurassic Florida."

Shea always manages to amuse me and I have a soft spot for his titles. In fact, whenever I see new ones coming out, I start stalking Netgalley trying to get my hands on the latest as soon as possible. This book is novella length and my only complaint is the abrupt ending - I could have thoroughly enjoyed a much longer book. However, I already have his next release "Rattus New Yorkus" on my TBR so I have something more to satisfy my creature feature urge. If you want an "out-of-the-box" summer read, grab "Jurassic Florida" now!

Hands-down, Hunter Shea is one of the most consistently entertaining horror authors I've come across. I can always count on the man to deliver some truly fun, B-movie pulp in print form, and Jurassic, Florida is no exception. Dig it:

After an act of eco-terrorism against an off-shore oil rig large enough to rock the Richter scale, the residents of Polo Springs begin to notice a sudden increase in lizard activity. Sidewalks are cracking apart, giant holes are appearing in the ground, and iguanas are literally everywhere. If that weren't bad enough, Hurricane Ramona has its eyes set on Polo Springs, causing further calamity and unearthing even more iguanas. Big ones. Like, dinosaur big. Ancient, primitive, twenty-five foot tall iguanas. And those sumbitches are hungry!

Sounds like a good time, right? Well, it is. Like I said, Shea knows how to craft some wild creature features. Jurassic, Florida is a hell of a romp, too, filled with monsters, gore, and carnage, with the pace cranked up to rapid-fire. This one's a slim novella, and the story flies by at hurricane speed, driven by one event after another.

On the character front...well, this is the type of story you don't want to too attached to any one individual. Still, Shea makes a couple memorable figures here, such as Anna, the town's 18-year-old mayor. I wouldn't have minded a bit more backstory to her in regards to the particulars of her election, but screw it. You just gotta ride with it, and figure that if a real-life Alaskan town can have a cat mayor, then a fictional young adult like Anna at least stands half a chance of holding office, so why not? She gets some good moments to shine, as do Don and his family, and a sprightly, young lesbian couple. Don't expect everybody to make it through unscathed, though, and there were a few moments that manage to surprise me with just how blackhearted Shea can be. Good on him!

All in all, Jurassic, Florida is a heck of good time, and one that is reminiscent of natural horror flicks like Them!, and to a degree Godzilla, where giant animals turn the local human population into an all-you-can-eat buffet. By novella's end, I was hungry for more! Thankfully, Jurassic, Florida is the first in a trio of One Size Eats All novellas from Shea and Kensington/Lyrical Underground, so I'll be getting plenty more instances of crazy animals feasting on skewered humans. You really can't go wrong with that.

My thoughts : WOW this brings back memories of the old black and white SCI FI movies I love to watch from the 50s and 60s , where you have gaint monsters vs the human race , and yes i know they still make them today but there's something about those old movies that I love and this story has that something. Also this one was way better then his last book which i read and didn't like , this one is right up there with is first book i ever read which is called The Montauk Monster, with that said I would love to say thinks to Netgalley and the Kensigton Publishing as well as the author for giving me a change at reading and reviewing Jurassic Florida in change for my honost opinion.

Review: JURASSIC FLORIDA by Hunter Shea

NOBODY handles Cryptozoology Horror like Hunter Shea. This man has an encompassing imagination and a jolly sense of humor in the face of danger. He can make you drop every nano-ounce of disbelief, make you incinerate your skeptic suit, and toss you whole-hog into the midst of inescapable terror--and love it.

On Florida's lower Gulf Coast, a tiny community braces for a before-season hurricane. No surprise there. But a few months earlier, an eco-terrorist attack destroyed an oil rig and the Gulf' s delicately balanced ecosystem. Now unleashed are creatures--iguanas--every bit as huge, hungry, and implacable as extinct dinosaurs. Mankind's on the menu--go get em', champs! Dinner bell' s rung!!

When I saw this cover and read the description I was hoping it would be along the lines of Hunter Shea's Mail Order Massacre trilogy. (which I loved) This one was just not as fun for me. Even though I just this minute finished reading it I can not even remember the name of a single character. I think of them as the old man, the teenage mayor, the family, and the gardening lesbian couple. This was just an ok read for me. It lacked the humor and the terror I was expecting.

Throw your disbelief meter out the window 'cos its needle will definitely be in the red zone. Just sit back, read and have fun...and don't forget the popcorn.

When I was a kid, B-Grade movies used to scare the hell out of me. I look at them now and laugh. Have a look at this movie, "The Giant Claw" HERE Go to 27.12 and check out the monster. How could I have been terrified by that? But I was. Okay...Don't be so judgy and stop laughing. I was a naive little bugger. I remember making my father take me up the dark hall to my bed. Then I couldn't go to sleep because I was sure that giant claw was going to come through my window!

Hunter Shea has taken one of these wonderful old Creature Features and turned it into a book. When I read the synopsis, I didn't think a bunch of giant iguanas would be scary at all. In fact, I nearly gave up on it. Glad I didn't. It was great. 'cept for the ending. That was a bit rushed and flat. I wanted the military to blow the shit out of those monsters. Hey Hunter! Rewrite that ending. (I only took half a star off though.)

A Must-Read for those B-Grade Creature Feature lovers...especially the black-and-white ones (the movies not the fans). Four and a Half Stars.

Here’s the thing about Hunter Shea’s books… You can tell that he’s having as much fun writing them as you are reading them.

From the very first page, you’re having fun. Absolutely ridiculous things are happening and things are getting chompy.

Shea gives us a fun group of characters as well. Just don’t fall in love with them too much because, well, chompy things happen and there’s blood and body parts and screaming and yelling and…you get the picture.

I didn’t completely love the solution to everything, though it did give me a laugh.

Can’t wait for his next book!

I requested to review this book without reading the description. All I had to see was Hunter Shea's name. I can't help it - I have liked everything I've read by him.

Polo Springs, Florida, is a quiet town with people who generally keep to themselves. Problem is, they are having an infestation problem. Only instead of rats or roaches or termites, the problem is lizards - those cute little lizards that seem to run rampant all over the southeast US. However these lizards are coming out in droves, enough to relocate gardens, sidewalks, and lawns. And while Ann, Polo Springs' 18 year-old mayor, has contacted an expert to help, there's a hurricane a-coming so everything is on hold. The so-called expert does have one disturbing piece of information. He believes these lizards are all babies, which begs the question: where are the parents and how many are there? Then Hurricane Ramona hits much harder than predicted, but that is the least of their worries. The real question and worry is just how big can an iguana grow...?

I knew I was going to enjoy a book whose description starts off: "FLORIDA. IT’S WHERE YOU GO TO DIE." The characters were varied, the plot action-packed, and the gore abundant. Imagine - those cute little lizards suddenly growing to epic proportions and attacking! Another delightful creature read.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

Let me start this review off by saying that I'm a big fan of Hunter Shea. The guy has made his bread and butter by putting out high-quality creature features. With the amount of work this guy has published in the last few years, even Rembrandt has to stumble once in a while. Jurassic, Florida feels like Hunter's misstep. The writing is good. The characters are decent. The content was the problem for me. In a quasi-homage to Jurassic Park and Godzilla B-movies, JF comes off as hokie. The story felt like it was trying to play it serious, but I simply couldn't get into iguanas the size of buildings that happened to find their way to the earth's surface after an oil well explosion rocks the Gulf. I don't have to have all the answers to the Hows and Whys, but this one insulted my suspension of disbelief a little too much. Now, if the premise sounds like it might be right up your alley and you can overlook the "realism", by all means, jump into it. Hunter knows how to construct character and dialogue with the best of them. But, alas, Jurassic, Florida wasn't for me.

So I love a creature feature. But not all creature features are created equal. However I am more than happy to report that this is a rip roaring, green iguana stomping explosive ride.

This book isn’t going to lead you to thoughtful contemplation. But sometimes you just want gory fun. If that’s what you are looking for then Jurassic, Florida is the book for you. If you love tremors then I can guarantee that you will love this book.

Please note I received this book for an honest review. All thoughts are mine.

Woo Hoo, another creature feature, Jurassic Florida by Hunter Shea. I love his horror stories and to see that fabulous cover and know there’s gonna be some munching going on makes me eager to begin.

Humans: They’re what’s for dinner.

And it’s all you can eat...

With a start like that, I don’t think Hunter Shea can go wrong. If you could see me now, all you would see is my teeth, because my smile is so wide….

So…let’s travel to sunny Florida, my neck of the woods. I see a lot of lizards hanging around, but nothing like these blood thirst buggers. There are lizards galore, but, more than that, is the hurricane heading their way.

Sinkholes, everyone in Florida know what sinkholes are, but these are something else entirely.

It’s hard to write a review without giving things away, so I’ll just say this….

Hunter Shea can sure spin a wicked tale. In Jurassic Florida, he starts out slow, feeding me a little at a time…Until the storm hits and all hell breaks loose.

I must warn you not to get attached to any of the characters. It’s hard to say who or how many will survive, because Hunter Shea is not afraid to kill them off in a savage and brutal way. I must be sick because I can’t help but laugh as I picture the events unfold like a movie in my mind. I love all the blood curdling gnoshing going on and revel in their misery.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of Jurassic Florida by Hunter Shea.

Hunter Shea's JURASSIC FLORIDA is a flat out giant monster story. Im talking 25 foot giant Iguanas (and hordes of their normal sized friends). Thats it. Its a giant monster book. And it's bad ass.

This is Shea doing what he does best, playing with monsters. I dont believe there is any sub text here. The iguanas arent a metaphore for the human condition. He just writes flat out, character driven monster stories.

This is the second Hunter Shea book I've read. I get the brand now. I will definitly be bacl for more when i need to scratch that pure monster itch?

Full of action

The story is a wild ride through an old coastal town in Florida.
The town is hit by a strong hurricane and many of the town's people described on riding out the storm instead of leaving.
Now throw in a infestation of iguanas and you find yourself having to run for your life.
But not from the hurricane.
I would have liked a better ending, but that's just me.

I received a copy of this from NetGalley in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.

FLORIDA. IT’S WHERE YOU GO TO DIE.
Welcome to Polo Springs, a sleepy little town on Florida’s Gulf Coast. It’s a great place to live—if you don’t mind the hurricanes. Or the flooding. Or the unusual wildlife . . .

I do like me a creature feature movie or book, the cheesier the better.

I loved the cover art, it reminded me of a B-movie poster.

The book itself is a short, easy read requiring very little brainpower. As entertainment the book is great, and a good way to spend a couple of hours.

The characters were great, but don't get attached to them as there's lot of bloody body parts, screaming and yelling.

The ending felt a bit stuck on but that's probably because I wanted the lizards to eat everyone!

This was my first book from this author. An excellent application of the law of unintended consequences. A group of eco-warriors commit and act of terror on an oil platform, creating a huge problem in the form of green iguanas for the small town of Polo, Florida. Thousands of green iguanas - no real problem until the grown-ups that birthed the thousands show up. As one part of the book says looking like "Godzilla on four legs".
A quick and easy read.

First of let me start by saying this was my first Hunter Shea book, and second off let me say, I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I love killer animal books and I especially appreciate when the author does not go to deep into the story and just gives me action and gore which is exactly what Shea did! There were some elements that kept this from being a 5 Stars for me that I couldn’t get passed but other than those minor things, this was very entertaining and a fun fast read!

Hunter Shea delivers hugely enjoyable horror with a smile on its face. Mind you, with iguanas this size, they would eat that smile right off and come back for seconds.

Polo Springs, Florida is suddenly invaded by an outpouring of lizards. At first, the rather sweet kind - the sort that come and visit you on your veranda. No harm to anyone except we are not talking about the odd one or two, we are talking invasion proportions and the problem is these are only babies. When their much bigger - and meaner - relatives start to appear...let's say you had better know how to run. Fast.

This was a great fun read and the first in a trilogy, I believe, so I'm already looking forward to what Hunter Shea serves up next.

Delightfully cheesy!
The state of Florida is being overrun with green iguanas. But these aren't just any green iguanas. Definitely not the pets that you would buy at the pet store. These are aggressive. Not to mention BIG! Will anyone make it out of this mess alive?
Hahaha I loved this book! Classic B-rate horror at its best. The author writes in a very to the point manner so the story is extremely easy to follow. Even though you are following through several different point of views. Like a monster movie out of the 1950s this book has a great biting wit. Great storytelling. Great book!
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes horror or Monster stories, or anyone who generally likes a nice cheesy monster flick.
