Generally listed as the youngest apostle, he was the son of Zebedee and Salome. His brother James was another of the Twelve Apostles. The Church Fathers identify him as John the Evangelist, John of Patmos, John the Elder, and the Beloved Disciple, and testify that he outlived the remaining apostles and was the only one to die of natural causes, although modern scholars are divided on the veracity of these claims. John the Apostle is traditionally held to be the author of the Gospel of John, and many Christian denominations believe that he authored several other books of the New Testament (the three Johannine epistles and the Book of Revelation, together with the Gospel of John, are called the Johannine works), depending on whether he is distinguished from, or identified with, John the Evangelist, John the Elder, and John of Patmos.

"Dear friend, don’t let this bad example influence you. Follow only what is good. Remember that those who do good prove that they are God’s children, and those who do evil prove that they do not know God." (3 John 11)
The verse above reminds me of the old song: "They will know that we are Christians by our love."
This book is written from John to Gaius, which is a name I recognize from watching The Chosen. I don't know if it's intended to be the same guy, but I'm guessing it's not a coincidence. (No spoilers in the comments please! I haven't watched Season 3 yet.) I highly recommend The Chosen, by the way.

3 John is a personal letter that revolves around three individuals: (1) Gaius, the recipient of the letter, thought to be a pastor under James' care and supervision; (2) Diotrephes, the one causing trouble; and (3) Demetrius, who was probably the bearer of the letter.

James sought to encourage Gaius and gives mostly positive council but also warns against a power-hungry leader named Diotrephes. Truth, love, and the goodness of God are prevailing themes.

John encourages believers to orient themselves to helping other Christians rather than putting themselves first. He also makes it clear that both evil and good can be found within the confines of the church.

This is part of a series where I am reading the Bible in chronological order. I am not doing this for reasons of faith, as I am agnostic, but because of my interest in mythology, ancient literature, and history. I chose the NRSV because I used to be Catholic and still have sympathies there. More importantly, this version seeks a balance between an accurate translation and the literary qualities of the King James Bible. So it seems you get the best of two worlds.

The third epistle of John talks about how as believers, we should delight in others walking in the truth. It’s so important especially when we become parents later on, that we find joy “to hear that my children walk in the truth.” Because ultimately, that’s the only thing that matters in this world.
John also talks about how we should treat fellow believers in Christ who serve him and the ministry with hospitality and generosity. We should welcome them and be “fellowhelpers of the truth.” He gives an example of a person who didn’t welcome him in: Diotrephes, who treated John with “malicious word” and “prated against him.”
As believers in Christ, our words, thoughts and actions should be pure and good, and we should welcome those who serve the Lord with open arms; for if we do good and not evil, we are of God

The book of Third John is the sixty-fourth book in the Bible, and it is the twenty-fifth book in the New Testament. The author of this book is John, who calls himself the Elder. There is some debate as to whether it was written by the apostle John going by another title or another John called the Elder. However, church tradition from the second century on is adamant that this book, as well as Second John, was written by the apostle.
Like Second John, Third John was most likely written toward the end of John’s life while he was exiled on Patmos. The letter was written to a church leader in Asia Minor who was called Gaius. While Second John focused on how believers should deal with false teachers, Third John focuses on how believers should deal with those who “proclaim the truth.” These believers should be welcomed and provided for in their mission to tell about the Good News.
Despite trouble from the leader of a church who was no longer practicing hospitality toward missionaries, John encourages Gaius and his fellows to continue to be kind and hospitable toward those who travel doing the Lord’s work. John exhorts is to live in love and truth when dealing with brothers and sisters on Christ. Christians should care for one another, especially those who travel, and show each other the love of Christ.

John is brief because he wants to visit in person and tell Gaios the rest face to face rather than with pen and ink.

The book of John tells us about the life story of Jesus from birth with John the baptist. It also tells us the story on how He called his 12 disciples to preach his gospel. Only two Lessons have stood in this book.
1. To love one another as you love God
2. To forgive those who have hurt you
"If you remain in and i will remain in you" Do not fear for I have conquered the world.
It also thought me the most important lesson. Jesus cannot abandon his children.

There is no doctrine laid out in 3 John, which is strictly a personal letter, but the overall theme is the importance of hospitality, especially when it comes to men who were working to spread the gospel. The letter is written to a man named Gaius. Gaius seems to have been a wealthy man, since the epistle's author, who identifies himself only as "the Elder", did not think it would impose unduly on him to host some traveling preachers for a short time.The Elder may have converted Gaius, since he calls Gaius his "child" in the faith.

3 John Review
3 John is the 64th book of the Bible that is another letter from the church leader. Like 2 John this book is quite short but I like the few things it said. 3 John helped me remember that I should always do kind deeds and welcome people. I enjoyed this book that I reccomend to everyone but I prefer 1 John since it was longer and I took more things from it. I give 3 John 4/5 stars.

1:14, "I hope to see you soon, and we will talk face to face." After a year of isolation and separation due to the pandemic, I have a deeper appreciation and understanding of the writer here. I've longed for this many times!

All these Books of John are letters to people warning to be aware of false prophets. He had already spoken to each of them. He repeated remember I have already taught you the right way. Follow my teaching and avoid the false profits lest you be lead astray.

It was a mystery why this short letter of John to his friend was published as one book. I got the point, but it confused me when he closed out the letter with, "I have much more to say to you, but I don't want to write it with pen and ink (1:13)." What is this about?
