May and Lillie track down the Xeros, but are horrified to learn the gang uses Shines in violent, deadly cage fights. Too late, May and Lillie realize the Xeros are smarter than they expected and, armed with the explosive power of Shines, are incredibly powerful. The Shine series has the neatest concept: William Bernhardt wrote the first five Shine books. Then, he invited other authors to write future installments in the series. Tamara Grantham is one such author and she's written Shine #6: Raze. I think it takes a lot of courage and gumption to come behind an established author and continue their story. I admire Grantham for taking the leap and adding her own voice to this unique series.

I broke one of my cardinal reading rules and read this book without reading its predecessors. I was a little confused at the beginning, but Grantham provides a good explanation of who the Shines are and what they can do, so I didn't stay confused long.

I thought Raze was so well-paced. It moved quickly without feeling rushed. The characters were exceptionally well-developed, especially considering that Raze is a novella. The plot was intense---seriously, the Shines fight to the death---and I couldn't put this book down once I became invested in the story.

I was surprised by the ending and loved the shock of it. I really enjoyed Raze and look forward to reading more from Tamara Grantham!

This sixth book grounded in the Shine universe, conceived by William Bernhardt, provides a different view of this rich setting. Author Tamara Grantham, while staying true to the Shine world, takes us into the minds of a woman who is not a Shine but works with her sister to investigate crimes involving Shine's, especially those with Shine's as victims. We enjoy the clever and distance powers of individual Shines, but enter a netherworld where both Shines and non-shines are threatened. Through the course of the story, universal emotions including family ties, grief, compassion, self-preservation are dealt with in an engaging and often unexpected way. I look forward to reading more from this talented writer and others in this groundbreaking series.

This is a fun, quick read with lots of action. I loved getting to know the two sisters. I hope we get to see them again in another story. The twists in this story had be going...wait, what! I didn't see that coming at all. Great read!

This was a clever, engaging story. The character were tough, yet sympathetic. At least, that's what I hear. I might be a little biased.
