A thunderous night and DS Lasser finds himself chasing a man through ancient woodland. Soaked to the skin with the lightning illuminating the tumultuous sky he is determined to get his man. This is only the start to a night that will change him forever. Soon he will find a young girl, a runaway with a terrifying tale to tell, leading Lasser on a race against time as he tries to help her find her way through the terror. Though as the mystery unfolds Lasser realises that there is more at stake and the clock it ticking. The question is can he save the innocent as well as the guilty as the thunder continues to bellow from the unforgiving heavens?
Rob Roughley lives in the North West of England (God's coal bunker, the land of the wedding cake made by placing three meat pies on top of one another and whippets on lengths of string) He is the author of eight crime/thriller novels featuring DS Lasser. The novels are set between the run down streets of a northern town and the beautiful yet desolate west Pennine moors. If you love your crime fiction crammed with square jawed heroes driving flash cars and glorious women who shimmer with inner light, then the DS Lasser novels are not for you. However, if you prefer your characters to be flawed, with a sprinkling of dandruff and old acne scars, the plots to be laced with dark humour, then give them a try. 1 The Needle House 2 The Way that it Falls 3 Tethered to the Dead. 4 Twisted Coming soon: 5 More Equal than Others 6 Vanished Beneath 7 Riven 8 Bad Self
A short story to introduce DS Lasser. During an action-packed start, we find him chasing an attacker into a derelict psychiatric hospital which leads to another discovery. Through other characters and DS Lasser's own responses to situations, the reader can begin to build a picture of our hero's personality. After this introduction to DS Lasser, I will definitely be reading more by author Robin Roughly.
I Wish I Hadn’t Read This During The Holiday Season
This story is very good, but it was not for me at this time of year—Christmas 2018. I’ve been reading and listening to short works recently, but I should’ve waited until after New Year to read this. The ending is perfect for the story, but it was not something I wanted to read just now. This is just my druthers, so you may feel differently.
Trigger Warnings: child abuse, suicide and grisly/bloody murder scene descriptions
This short little prequel is designed to introduce DS Lasser and it does that beautifully. He feels like a real person with real empathy for the people around him. A great introduction to the series. This story covers a heavy topic and will leave a few readers unsettled. It leaves me looking forward to the next in the series.
This short story was a prequel to the DS Lasser books. I would recommend reading the series first. This was a great story but you need to get to know Lasser before you read it. The Lasser books will grab you and you won’t be able to put them down.
What a great introduction to the series. I have read some of the books but decided to start from the beginning. This one was a bit sad but Lasser is a character shaped by his job.
